IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-GUMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 77,263, dated May 9, 1876; application filed August 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI MoOLoY, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usedo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in saw-gummers; and consists in the following parts and combinations, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the under side of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Referring to the letters of reference therein, A is the frame, or that partof the machine which receives the saw, and is provided at both extremities with clamping-jaws B B, in connection with which respectively are the set-screws b b, which retain the saw in position. 0 0 are the gage-screws in the ends of the frame A. r I
From the frame A is suspended, upon pivot d, a frame, D, for supporting and guiding the cutter-frame. The lower end E of this frame belts or curves out at an angle, so as to form an elongated circular shape. This curved portion E is provided with a slot, 0, which embraces a set-screw, H, which projects from an car on the main frame A, and is provided with caps, so as to retain the end of the frame D in any position desired.- On this frame D slides the frame or carriage L that This carriage-frame L is provided with a collar, is, in which turns the feed-screw K, which latter Works through the ear m of the adjustable frame D, and is turned by the hand-wheel M. -The carriageframe L supports two shafts, N O. The shaft N may be provided at one or both of its extremities with a crank for revolving it, and it carries the pinion-wheel p, which meshes into the gear-wheel P upon the cutter'shaft 0. Attached suitably to the frame L is the pawl l, in connection with which the wheel P serves as a ratchet. At the extremity of the cut ting-shaft is the cutter Q.
The operation of this mechanism is at once seen. The saw is clamped in the jaws B B,
properly gaged by the screws 0 c, and the cutter is revolved by turning the crank, the position for commencing the out being varied at pleasure by adjusting the frame D. The ratchet and pawl P l serve to prevent the cutter-shaft from revolving backward when the cutters are in contact with the saw, and to prevent the crushing of the cutting-edges of the cutters.
It will be seen, of course, that this cutter may either be single or double geared according to the power that is called for. The cutter-shaft O is movablelongitudinally, so that any portion of the cutter may be brought in contact with the saw.
In the end of the cutter-shaft, opposite to the cutter, are circumferential grooves 1", in which may sit, as adjusted, theforked bracket R, which is clamped to the carriage-frame by the thumb-screw S. In order to move the cutter to the right or to the left this bracket R is lifted out of its groove by the workman, and is again set in the adjacent groove corresonding to it after the shaft has been moved, and then securely fastened by the thumbscrew S.
By the mechanism described the cutter may be fed up to the saw in either a straight or curved line, thus adapting the machine to teeth of diiferent shapes.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved saw-gummer, constructed with a frame adjustable in virtue of the curved slot e at its lower extremity, in combination with a cutter-shaft carriage adjustable thereon by set-screw M, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The cutter-shaft carriage L, provided' with ways II, in combination with the frame D, pivoted at d, and adjustable in virtue of the curved slot 6, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a saw-gummer, the combination of the forked bracket 1%, grooves r, and thumbscrew S, substantially as and for the purpose described. I
