IMPROVEMENT IN CALF-WEANERS.

, Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 177,261, dated May 9, 1876; application filed April 19, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOSEPH S. MAU-GH- LIN and WILLIAM 0. MARK, of Onawa, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oalf-Weaners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make' and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to calf-weaners having spur-wires provided with bulbs to be inserted in the nose for holding the muzzle in place- The bulbs on such muzzles, as heretofore made, being rigidly attached, are liable to chafe the skin, and the muzzles are liable to fit grooves around the wires B B, near their upper ends, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings; but'the bulbs may be attached by swiveljoints formed in any other preferred manner. 0 represents the body of the nuzzle, made of wood, and provided with recesses a a a a to receive the spur-wires, which are held in place on the block 0 by a metallic plate, I), fastened to the block by a riveted bolt, 0, near oneend, and a button or book, 0, in a slot, d, near the other end of the plate,

which is provided with holes 61 and bent ends 61 to hold the wires B B in place. The sides of these wires are adjusted in the recesses at the ends of the block, and, extending below the block, are bent upward into recesses a and the spur ends b I), bent outward, are extended through the holes (1 in the plate. The

spur b is adjusted in recess a and bentdownward and outward below the plate, as shown in the drawings.

In adjusting the muzzle on the animal, the hook c is turned lengthwise with the slot (1, allowing that end of the plate to spring outward from the block, and the wire B, carrying bulb A, to be moved outward, as shown by Letters Patent in a calf-weaner, is-

l. Nose-bulbs connected with the muzzle by swivel-joints, substantially as and for the purposes described. I

2. The .swivel' nose-bulbs A A, made of metal or other hard material, and covered with rubber or other elastig or soft substance, substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. The wooden block 0, forming a wooden bearing-surface, in combination with wires 13 in combination with plate I) and block (J, substantially as and for the purposes described.

5. The combination of the swivel-bulbs A A, wires B B, plate 1), wooden block G, locking-hook c, and spurs b 11? b substantially as and for the purposes described.
