In manufacturing shackles, pitmen, eccentric straps, and other machine elements which arek adapted-to move in a plane between two adjacent surfaces, itis important lthat the thickness of such elements be gaged with the utmost accuracy, in order that they may move freely when assembled, without any appreciable transverse play. Recently, itl has become a common practice to size such elements in a power press by a p rocessknown as squeezing. In this process, work-engaging pressure members with flat or formed faces take the place of the usual punching or i shaping dies, such pressure members being accurately gaged tosqueeze the to the desired thickness. e
In carrying out the squeezing process, as above described, it frequently happens that the work piecetwill stick to the upper squeez-J ing or pressure member and be lifted there- "by, and sometimes the operator, without A noticing this, will insert the next work piece beneath the piece already inthe press.` The result is quite disastrous, causing 'the two pieces Vto he squeezed instead of One. The tremendous pressure thus developed imposes a strain on the machine, which throws it out of adjustment, if it does not wreck it altorether. i

What I claim is:
1. In a power press, the combination with astatonar bed, a pressure member movable toward an away from the same, and blocks for attachment respectively to said bed and said pressure member to gage the thickness to which the work piece is to be squeezed, of vertical guide means secured in and extending upwardly from -thelowermost block, anintermediate block disposed between the first mentioned blocks and mounted for vertical sliding movement on said guide means, resildetermined gage on the faceof the lower block to positively limit the minimum'distance between said faces to the desired thickness of the workpiece, means positivel limting the maximum separation of said aces to less than twice the thickness of the workpiece, and means for maintaining the intermediate block in its uppermost position when the plunger is raised out of engagement therewith.

In a power press, the combination of a stationa bed, a block mounted thereon, vertical gui e means secured to and extending upwardly from said block, a movable block giided on said guide means, a pressure memr o erable to force the movable block down- Y wa yto operate on the work, stops on said guide means to limit the upward movementof in its highest position.
