or other violent maneuver and enable him to keep his eye in proper alignment with the gun sights.
for the fixed machine gun of an airplane which may be interchangeably mounted in the sight sockets of the airplane.
A further object is to provide a chin rest of the kind described which may be easily l5 andquickly adjusted to engage the chin or fside of the face of the gunner and permit the use of either eye in sightingthe gun. V 7
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novelfde- T 0 tails of construction and combination of I parts hereinafter fully described and claimed,
' r it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of vthe invention.
In the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout Figure l is a top plan view of a chin rest constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional View 1 on the line 38 of Figure 2; t
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic view of the chin rest in operation. y i
' Nearly all the late types of military aircraft are equipped with three sets. of fixed gun sight sockets disposedalong the longitudinal axis of the airplane, one set being 10- catecl in the center as shown at l and one set on either side of the center as shown M2 and 3. This arrangement of sockets permits the gunner to mount the sight 4 either in the center of the cowl or on either side of the cowl by engaging the mounting pins 5. of the sight in the corresponding sight sockets. The present invention provides a chin rest which may be mounted in either set of the sight support and adjustable about an axis at rightflce sockets not being used for the sight.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of thechin rest jlhe chinrest comprisesa tubular support '6w hi chis closed at one end by a cap 7 and is bent laterally near the opposite end and' tergminates in a split'ring clamp 8 whicli'receives the *chin" rest frame. -The rmme eom rises spaced'bifurcated plates 9 connectedtogether at the forward ends by a tubular rod 10,
7 V which ismouiitedtoturn within the clamp 8, A further object is to provide a chinrest and is lockedagain'st twining by a bolt 11.
Thefree ends of the plates-areconnected-to gether by spacing bolts l2fA'." pair of similar 'pads11'3are1 disposed at' ifiang'le to each other between the plates to receive the chin of the gunner. Each vpad is preferably formed of V sponge rubber and is reinforced internallyto retain its shape by a rigid metal core 14 which terminates in eaves 15 which receive the spacing bolts.
A pair of mounting pins 16 are provided for securing the support 6 to the sight *fio brackets, each "pin terminating in a split ring clamp 17 which receives the tubular support and maybe locked in any adjusted position thereon by a bolt 18. These pins are adapted to be interchangeably received inthe open- 575 ings of any set of the sight brackets and are secured in position by nuts 17 e To facilitate easy adjustment and removal of the chin rest frame the terminals ofthe split ring clamp are hinged as shown at 20 to 3 the body of the clamp.'
In'operation, the tubular support 6 may be slid longitudinally through the clamps 17 of the'mounting pins to position the pads 13 of the chin rest against the chinof the gunner.
' The support mayalso be rotated on its axis in the clamps for securing the vmounting pins in either set of idle sight brackets. Also the frame ofthe chin rest may be swung laterally on theend of the support 6 by loosening' eo f the bolt 11 to position the pads against the chin or sideof the face of the gunner and lalsonto permit either eye being used for.
sighting. v I r Having thus described my invention what es I claim is- V '1. A chin rest for sighting machine guns,
comprising a support adjustable about its longitudinal axis, a frame mounted on said angles to said support anda pad on said frame adapted to receive the chin of the gunner.
2. A chin rest for Sighting machine guns, comprising a laterally and longitudinally adjustable support, a frame connected to said support and adjustable about an axis at right angles thereto and a pad secured to said frame to receive the chin of the gunner.
3. A chin rest for sighting machine guns,
comprising a laterally longitudinally adjustable support, a frame connected to said support and adjustable about an axis at right angles thereto and a plurality of pads arranged in the form of a V 'secur'edto "said frame to receive the chin of the gunner fig-In combination with an airplane provided with-a plurality of sight sockets spaced laterally with respect the longitudinal axis of saidairplane, of a chin rest support adapted to be interchangeably secured tosaidsight sockets comprising a laterally vand longitudinally adjustable support, a frarnepivotally and adjust-ably connected to one end of said support and. a pad secured to said frame to receive the chin of gunner. I V
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
