This invention relates to an improved form of braided packing, and the like, and to a special process by which the product is manuparticularly to the variety of braided packing, which, prior to my invention, was produced by forming a plurality of layers successively oneupon another, until a packing of the desired weight and cross-sectional dimensions was obtained.
This method of manufacture was neces-. sarily slow, for the reason that of each superposed layer required the passing of the product through a separate braid-v ing operation. Packing produced in this manner has certain objectionable features, for example, when the threads, of which the layers are composed, begin to wear portions thereof become loose and quite frequently lodge in the valves and between other relatively movable parts of the machinery in which the packing is used. Also in this layerbuilt packing the separate superposed layers are cemented together with a rubber cement which is objectionable when the packing is used at high temperatures.
The principal object of produce a braided packing of any weight, in a single braiding operation, which in external appearance greatly resembles the above described layer-built packing, but which is formed in such a manner that all my invention is to the threads of which the packing is composed interlock within'the center of the packing, thus producing a superior article in considerably less time than has been possible heretofore, and obviating the above mentioned obthreads,

In forming my improved interbraided packing I 'employ a plurality of series of each series being composed of a plurality of individual threads. Each series of threads constitutes a segmental section of in the cross-section of the packing, throughout the len h of the packing, and the threads of eac' series or segmental section are interbraided on .the outersurface of the packing with the threads of the series or segmental section lying immediately adjacent thereto,.thus the several segthe formation 1 desired are braided together on interlocked with each other within thecenter of the packing. Thus a compact braided packing of an desired weight is produced, the number. 0
respective weights, and the number of series employed determining the ultimate weight and cross-sectional dimensions of the packng. j
The weight, cross-sectional dimensions, and the cross-sectional configuration of the packing may be further modified to any desired extent by introducing at certain places within, and running longitudinally of, the packing any desired number of around which the threads of the several series are braided. ing may be caused to assume a round, square, rectangular, triangular or polygonal form in cross-section, depending upon the number, disposition and relative weights of the respective core threads.
The construction and method of manufacture of the packing forming the subject of my present invention will be fully disclosed in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which:

The threads are individually carried by individual bobbin carriers of conventional form over the bobbin carrier supporting platform of a conventional form of braiding marespective series of threads A, B, C and D moving in the paths and in the directions illustrated in igs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 respectively, causing the threads of series A to be braided with the threads of the adjacent series B and adjacent series D on the outer surface of the packing; the threads of series B to be braided with the threads of adjacent series A and acent series C on the outer surface of the packing;
the threads of series G to be braided with the threads of adjacent series B and adjacent series D on the outer surface of the packing; and the threads of series D to be braided with the threads of adjacent series C and adjacent series A on the outer surface of the packing, as illustrated cl arly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
As shown clearly in Fig. 2 series A and series B interlock on the outer face of the 'packing in the manner indicated at AB; series B and C as illustrated at B-C; series G and D as illustrated at CD; and series D and A as illustrated at D-A.
- The path of travel of the threads of series -'A carries these threads intothe interior of the packing and beyond and around the axial center X of the packing; series C which is located diametrically opposite to series A also travels into the interior of the packing and beyond and around the axial center. X passing through and interlocking with series A about the center X as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Series B and series Dli'ke series A and C are disposed diametrically opposite to each other at right angles to series A and C, passing through each other about I the center X in the same manner as series A and C and also passing through both of the said latt'erseries A and C about the center X as illustrated. In this manner all the threads of all the series are interbraided with nally of the packing, while the threads of series B and D follow left hand irregular helical paths longitudinally of the packing. The number of threads'per series and the number of series in the-packing determine the pitch of the helical paths above noted and also determine the character of the braiding or weaving of the threads.
With nine threads per series and using four series as above noted, the appearance of the outer surface of the packing resembles that of a twill weave, in which each diagonally disposed thread passes over two threads diagplnally disposed in an opposite direct-ion an said opposite direction, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. It will be noted that thecore threads F and II are positioned diametrically opposite to each other and located on a line extending through the axial center X of the packing, which lies within the center space 26, and the threads G and I are also positioned diametrically opposite to each other on a line extending through the axis the line on which the core threads F and H are located being disposed at right angles to the line on which the core threads G and scribing the outline of a square, and consequently producing a substantially square packing.
By placing core threads at those centers and in those spaces, which having connecting lines drawn through them would describe a triangle, such for instance as the centers 10 and 13 and the space 29, a triangular packing would be produced and so on through the various range of possible forms.
Regardless of the positioning of the core threads each core thread will be tightly bound in place by the braiding threads of the they pass between and around the braiding threads of adjacent series and as they pass into the center of the packing and therein intertwine with the braiding threads of all the series about the axis of the'packing. \W
I claim:
1. A braided packing comprising a plurality of series of threads, each series of threads lying within and forming a definite section of the packing transversely and longitudinally thereof, the threads of each section being interbraided with the threads of adjacent sections, and passing from the exterior to the interior of the packing, wherein the threads of each section intertwine with the threads of each of the other sections.
2. A braided packing comprising a plurality of series of threads, each series of threads lying within and forming a definite section of the packing transversely and longithereof, the threads of each section being interbraided with the threads of adjacent sections, the said adjacentsections overlapping each other along their longitudinally extending edges-and the threads of each sec-- tion passing from the exterior to the interior of the packing, wherein the threads of each section intertwine with the threads of each of the other sections.
3. A braided packing comprising a plurality of series of threads, each series of threads lying within and forming a definite section of the packing transversely and-"longitudinally thereof, the threads of each section being interbraided with the threads of adjacent sections on the outer surface of the packing, and passing from the exterior to the interior of the packing, wherein the threads of each I are located, thus desection intertwine with the threads of each of the other sections.
4. A braided packing comprising a pluralof series of threads, the threads of each series being interbraided with those of the adjacent series, passing from the exterior to the interior of the packing wherein the threads of each series intertwine with the threads of the other series, and a core thread extending longitudinally of and within the packing around which the threads pass.
5. A braided packing comprising a plurality'of series of threads,'each series of threads lying within and forming a definite section of the packing transversely and longitudinally thereof, the threads of each section being interbraided with the threads of adjacent sections, passing from the exterior to the interior of the packing, wherein the threads of each section intertwine with the threads of each of the other sections, extending longitudinally of the packing within one of the said sections and bound therein by the said interbraiding of said threads.-
6. A braided packing comprising a plurality of series of threads, each series of threads lying within and forming a definite section of the packing transversely and longitudinally thereof, the threads of each section being interbraided with the threads of adjacent sections, passing from the exterior to the interior of the packing, wherein the threads of each section interwine with the threads of each of the other sections, and a core thread extending longitudinally through the center of the packing and bound therein by the said intertwining of the threads of the severalseries at the center of the packing.
