MEANS FOR TRANSFERRING GLASSWARE Original Filed May 14, 1927 49 17 i l1 U 46' l l .22
i THQMAs F. LAMB 39 7d/Md Patented July 29, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THOMAS F. LAMB, F MANSFIELD, OHIO MEANS FOR TRANSFERRING GLASSWARE Application led Hay 14, 1927, Serial No. 191,303. Renewed May 28, 1929.
The object of this invention is to provide an y improved and simplified means for transarm 15.
ferring glass ware, more particularly bottles from the molds to a belt for conveyance to a leer or other point for treatment or otherwise.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a view in elevation of I ny 1nvention showing the transfer device gripping a bottle in an opened mold.
Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail illustrating the gripper actuator.
In the views 5 designates the base in which is secured a column 6. On the column 6 is a loose sleeve 7 having at its upper portion a head 8 provided with a cam 9 on its upper face. On the upper portion of the column 6 1s another loose sleeve 10 having a head 1l facing the head 8 and provided with a cam 12 cooperating with the cam 9. Around the column 6 between the heads is a loose piece of coil spring 4 to establish friction between the heads either when closed or separated. Secured rigidly to and extending horizontally from the sleeve 10 is an arm 13 riveted at 14 near the middle of which is an upstanding Pivotally connected at 16 to the upper end of the arm is a lever 17 the inner end of which engages the groove 18'of a collar 19' fastened by means of a set screw 20 to the upper end of the post 6, so that when the sleeve 10 and horizontal Ibar are raised or lowered the lever 17 is swung up or down with the collar 19 as a fulcrum. The arm 17 is a lever of the third class, its outer end having pivoted to it at 21 and 22 a pair of divergently bent arms 23 and 24 carrying at their lower ends jaws 25 and 26 adapted to grip the neck of a bottle such as shown at 27 Fig. 1. Each of the arms 23 and 24 is held and guided in its movement between' a pair of pins 28 and -29 in the horizontal arm 13 so that when the lever 17 is swung upward at its outer end with respect to the arm 13 the jaws are closed toward each other to grasp the neck of a bottle; and conversely when said arm 13 is swung downward the jaws are separated to release the bottle. The members 30 are merely a pair of guide arms secured to the horizontal arm 13 to keep steady the frame constituting the transfer structure proper. Projecting from the lower end of the sleeve 7 is a rigid arm 31 havin p1votally attached thereto at a suitable hole 32 thereina rod 33 adapted to be reciprocated by any suitable power and therefore to swing the transfer frame and otherwise operate the same by means of the cams as hereinafter described. The swing of the transfer frame is limited in both directions (determined by the bottle gripping and bottle releasing points) by means of stops 34 and 35 mounted on a bracket 36 on a standard 37, the latter secured at its lower end to the base 5. Each of said stops can be made adjustable by slotting its attaching foot as best illustrated at the stop 35 and securing it in the desired position on the bracket 36 by means of set screw 38.
The operation of the means thus far described is this: Vhen the transfer frame is to take a bottle from the opened mold, it being remembered that the head 11 is down on the head 8, said transfer frame is swung by the operation of the arm 32 toward the stop 34, said stop arresting said frame whereupon continued pressure of the arm 32 in the same direction causes the cam 9 to act on the cam 12 to raise the head 11 thereby closing the jaws on the neck of the bottle 27, the latter being shown in the position it occupies when the parts of the mold at are opened to permit the removal of the bottle. To release thev bottle the transfer frame is swung in the opposite direction to the stop 35, said stop arresting said frame with the bottle above the point where it is to be deposited, a continued swing of the head 8 fetches the cam 9 from under the cam 12 thereby permitting the head 11 to descend toward the head 8 and the separation of the bottle grasping jaws. To limit the oscillation of the heads with reference to each other, and therefore to prevent the cams 9 and 12 from getting out of proper operating relation to each other the upper portion o the sleeve 10 is cut away as at 51 and the column 6 rovided with a stop 52 to abut against the s eeve at opposite sides of said cut-away portion.
39 designates a circular table onto which the bottles are deposited, said table being supported by a tube 39" around a stationary post ,45, said table having means for intermittently rotating it in one direction, including a loose sleeve 40 carrying a pawl 40 actuated by a link 41 connecting it with the arm 31 so that, when thetransfer frame is swung tolward the bottle-taking position, said pawl tion. The bottle releasin position is over the outer margin of the tab e and the bottle is there deposited in upright position as indicated in broken lines Fi 2. Mounted on a stationary post 45 exten ing u through an orifice in the center of the tab e 39 is a stationary bracket 46 on which is mounted a stationary deflecting plate 47 adapted to shunt the moving bottle o the table onto an ordinary belt 48, said belt adapted to carry the bottle to a leer. A transferred bottle is indicated at 27 on said belt in Fig. 2.
The forms of the parts can be changed and parts omitted without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
