UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. HURD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BASIN VALVE-TRAPS..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [77,l26, dated May 9, 1876; application filed March 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. HURD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Wash-Basin Valve-Trap, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved trap, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same, taken through line a: .117, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is across-section of the same, taken through line y 3 Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for attachment to the overflow-openings of wash-basins, to prevent sewergas from escaping through said openings, and which shall-be simple in construction and effective in operation.
- The invention consists of the trap formed of the casting made with an open side, so formed as to fit against the side of a washbasin, and with an openingin its bottom, closed with a valve, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a casting, open upon one side, and with its open side so formed as to fit against the inner side of a wash-basin, over its overflowopening. in the bottom of the casting A is formed an opening for the passage of the water, which opening is covered with a valve, B. The edges of the valve B are flanged to enter a groove in the inner side of the bottom of the casting A. The valve B should be placed at a little lower level than the lowest hole of the overflow-opening, so that the said valve. may always be water-sealed. The eavity of the casting A should be so formed that the water may pass up around the valve freely when it is raised a little from its seat, and at the same time so that the said valve can never get out of place.
This device may be secured in place by bolts passing through holes drilled in thebasin, and
the joint between it and the said basin should be packed with rubber or other suitable packmg. 1
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 The trap formed of the casting A, made with an open side, so formed as to fit against the side of a wash-basin, and with an opening in its bottom,-elosed with a valve, B, substantially as shown and described.
