In many cases water is pumped from a well and deliveredto a storage tank against air pressure. In such tank the expansion of the air in the tank is counted on to maintain 5 pressure for delivery purposes. It is found that the supply of air gradually diminishes so'that it is necessary frequently to replace the supply or at least to augment it. To accomplish this it has become the custom to'prob vide some kind of air pump in connection with the ordinary water pump, and this invention relates to such air pump and especially to suchpumps for usein connection with deep well pumps whereby air under pressure may be supplied to thewater raised from the well and with such water be carried to thetank or some other suitable receptacle in which it is desired to maintain a supply 7 of air. for -"expansion purposes. The objects of my invention are: V
(a) To provide an air pump. which is simple-and ieflicient inaction-and which may be actuated from the ordinary. deep well pumprod; V
r (b) To provide means for discontinuing the action of the pumpfat certain times;
and i c) To generally simplify and improve the design and construction of such a device.
The meansby. which the foregoing" and other objects are accomplishedand the manner of their accomplishment will readily be understood from the following specification stantially on the line I- I of Fig. 3.;

Thehead 23 and plat e.27 are provided respectively with holes orports 29 and30which may be registered to providepassages through the head and "ably mounted inaboss 32, on the head23, and extends thence upward through the holthe flange 21; The stufiing box 33 provides the plate 27, this hole being slotted to the edge of the plate to permit movement of the pin therein. When the rod 31 is disposed in the position shown in Fig. 3 the ports are shifted out of register.
35 is an air passageway drilled down through the center of the rod 13 to apoint below the point of attachment of the air pump plunger and thence connected by a lateral channel 36 into the air cylinder 20. The upper end of the pump rod is provided with a somewhat larger chamber 37 in which is screwed a valve seat against which a valve-39 is held by a compression spring 40.
41 is the water discharge pipe leading from the hollow boss 11 to a storage, tank.
The operation of the pump is as follows; with the plate 27 set as shown so that the holes therethroughregister with the holes in the air cylinder head, the up stroke of the pump rod 13 would draw air through these openings and on down stroke this airwould be forced out through these openings until the water supply brought up from below fills the pipe 12 and the hollow boss 11, after which, movement of the air plunger simply churns water into and out of the air cylinder.
Should however it be desired to force air out through thepipe tlalong with the water discharged, the rod 81 is turned to shift the holes 30 outof register with the holes 29, thereafter on the up stroke the ;plate 27 seating againstthe head 23 would cut oif'the air supply from that direction and cause air to be drawn past the valve 39 and downward through the passage-way35intothe air cylinder 20. .On the down stroke the-airplunger would force the air from thecylinder 20 through the holes29 displacing the plate 27,
by compressing-the spring 28, and forcingthe air out into the water .in thepipe 13.
At the end of the stroke the plate 27 immediately seats against the head 23c1osing oil the holes 29, and on the up stroke the air just forced out of the air cylinder is carried 11pward with the stream of water pumped from below and discharged through the pipe 41 to such receptacle as may have been provided.
It will be seen that during pumping the operator can at any time readily cut the air on or off asmay be desired.
It will also be noted that byraising the well pump rod to bring nut 17 above the air cylinder, the top nut 19 may be unscrewed and the cup leather removed and replaced without necessity of removing pump rod from the well.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In anair .pump,.a cylinder, a reciprocable .rod disposed axially thereth-rough, a plunger withinsaid cylinder secured to said pump rod and .reciprocable therewith, said pump rod having a chamber therein, above said plunger, and .a passageway leading downward therefrom and into said cylinder below said plunger, a valve seat within said chamber, a valve adapted to seat against the under side of said seat, a spring urging said valve against said seat, an annular head surrounding said pump rod, closing the lower end of said cylinder, said head having a plurality of ports therethrough, an annular plate having ports adapted to be registered with the ports in said head, a spring urging said plate against the outer side of said head, and means for shifting said plate to bring said ports into and out of register with the ports in said head, whereby said air pump may be rendered inoperative or operative as the case may be.
2. In an air pump; a cylinder, a reciprocable rod disposed axially therethrough, a plunger within said cylinder secured to said pump rod and reciprocable therewith, said pump rod having a passageway leading downward therethrough into said cylinder below said plunger, a check valve closing said passageway against pressure from within said cylinder, an annular head, surrounding said pump rod, closing the lower end of said cylinder, said head having a plurality of ports therethrough, an annular plate having ports adapted to be registered with the ports in said head, a spring urging said plate againstthe outer side of said head, and means for shifting said plate to bring said ports into and out of register with the ports in said head whereby said air pump may be rendered inoperative or operative as the case maybe.
3. In an air pump; acylinder, a reciprocable rod disposed axially therethrough, a plunger within said cylinder secured to said rod and reciprocable therewith, said pump rod having .a passageway leading downward therethrough into said cylinder below said plunger, a check valveclosing said passagewayagainst pressure from within saidcylinder, anannular head surrounding said pump rod, closing the lower end of said cylinder said head having a plurality of ports therethrough, an annular plate having ports adapted to be registered with the ports in said head, means yieldably urgingsaid plate against the outer side=of said head, andmeans for shifting said plate .to bring said ports into and out of register with the ports in said head, whereby said air pump may be rendered inoperative or'operative as the case may be.
4.
