The invention further com rehends in a vending machinean improve form of'delivery mechanism which-besides merely performing its function of delivering the goods to be vended, is subject to the partial control of the vendee to regulate the movement there of to an estimated desired point above the additional commodity wanted.
The invention still further aims to rovide in a vending machine a delivery mec anism which affords amusement to the vendeeor other observers. More specifically, the invention contemplates in a vending machine, a cabinet having a visible article supporting surface upon which a. variety of articles to be vended are arranged and displayed, together with a delivery mechanism partially under the control of the vendee which simulates a derrick having a clam shell bucket adapted for lateral movement over the-ar-' ticles and lowering and raising of the same to ick up, transport and deposit the same in a elivery chute for gravitational delivery to the vendee.
The invention further aims to provide an improved delivery mechanism for the above specified type of vending machine which includes a setting device controllable by the vendee for regulating the lateral movement of the article grasping and delivering element, together with com operated means for causing the delivery mechanism to follow through a predetermined cycle of operations. One of the principal objectsof the inven tion resides in the provision of automatic means operable by suitable driving mechanism turning in thesame direction for laterally moving, lowering, grasping, lifting, effecting a return lateral movement and releasing the articles by a suitable grappling element so as to deliver the commodities to a delivery chute for gravitational delivery to the vendee.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 20 designates generally the vending machine cabinet which is subdivid ed into upper and lower compartments 21 and 22 by a horizontal partition or shelf 23. The upper compartment is. provided with transparent panels 24 in its front and side walls whereby the interior of the upper compartment 21 is visible. .Preferably, the upper compartment is provided with a vertical wall 25 spaced from and nearer to the rear 'wall26 of the cabinet. The wall 25 extends from the. upper surface of the horizontal partition or shelf 23 to a point spaced from the top wall 27 of the cabinet and, extends across the width of the cabinet between its side walls 28. A container 29 constituting a hopper is positioned in front of the wall 25 and said container is provided with outlets 30 and also with a forwardly and v downwardly inclined bottom wall 31. Candies or other commodities 32 are arranged in the container 29 and gravitationally feed is the upper receiving end or mouth 34 of therefrom through.- the outlets 30 onto the upper surface of the horizontal partition or shelf 23, which surface serves to support and display the commodities to be vended, in addition to a variety of articles 33 which are in the nature of prizes. At one side of the cabinet directly in front of the wall 25 and extending through the partition orshelf 23 a delivery chute 35 which extends downward,-
ly into the lower compartment 22 and has an outlet 36 throughthe front wall 37 of the cabinet. It is, of course, understood that the upper receiving end or mouth 34 of the delivery chute is disposed-in a plane above the normal plane of the commodities :and articles to be vended and delivered. For the shell bucket, is provided for grasping, raising and discharging the commodities 32' and prize articles 33 through the conduit 38 into the upper open end or mouth 34 of the delivery chute for' gravitational delivery through the outward end 36.-
As illustrated, this mechanism includes a horizontally disposed substantially U-shaped frame 40, the bight 41 of which is provided with a depending angular lug42 projecting forwardly therefrom and provided with a tubular boss 43. The boss 43 is secured to the upper end of a vertical sleeve 44, which sleeve is mounted for rotatory movement in the bearing boss 45 carried by a horizontally disposed bracket 46 which is secured to and projects forwardly from the inner surface of the rear wall 26 of the cabinet at a point slightly above the upper edge of the wall 25. The lower end of the sleeve or tubular shaft 44 has secured thereto for rotatory movement therewith a collar 47 which is normally turned in a counter-clockwise direction un der the influence of a coil contractile spring 48, one extremity of which is attached at 49 to the front of the rear wall 26 and the opposite extremity of which is attached to a radially projecting pin 50 on the collar 47. The frame 40 includes laterally spaced arms 51 and 52 in which a shaft 53 extending transversely through the arms is journaled for rotation. The shaft has keyed or other wise'secured thereto medially thereof a worm wheel 54 which meshes with a worm gear 55 on a worm shaft 56. The worm shaft extends I through and is mounted for relative rotation with respect to the sleeve or tubular shaft 44, which shaft protrudes beyond the lower end of the sleeve 44 and is suitably coupled to, a driving shaft 57 which extends downwardly through the partition or shelf 23. In this manner, rotation is imparted to the shaft 53 from the driving shaft 57, the gear ratio being such that the shaft 53 is driven at arelatively lesser rate of speed. yoke 58 of substantially U-shape including a bight portion 59 and arms 60 and 61 is to vided, the free ends of the arms 60 an 61 being respectively pivotally connected at 62 and 63 to the free ends of the arms 51 and 52 of the frame 40. The arms are ofsubst'antially arcuate formation in side elevation and one of the arms, namely, the arm- 60, is adapted to be engaged by a sector shaped cam 64 forming part of a cam structure which includes a hub 65 keyed or other wise secured to the shaft 53 for turning movement therewith. The yoke 58 has fulcrumed thereto at 66 and 67' a pair of levers 68 and 69 respectively, which levers in turn have connected therewith outwardly projecting rods 70 and 71 which constitute derrick arms. The lever 68 is provided with a depending lug 7'2, with which a sector shaped cam element 73 also carried by the camhub 65 cooperates upon turning movement of the shaft 53 to effect relative vertical movements between the, derrick arms at predetermined times. The lever 69 is pro-' vided with a similar depending lug 74 which engages a "concentric circular collar 75 secured to the shaft 53 for turning move-' ment therewith.
A grasping element is supported by suspension from the outer free ends of the * derrick arms 70 and 71 and said element includes a pair of grappling jaws'76 and 77 which have angularly disposed arms 78 and 79 pivotally connected by a transverse shaft 80 whichextends through-the free terminals of the arms 78 and 79. A rocker element 81 is loosely supported by the shaft 80 by upwardly projecting bearing cars 82 through which the shaft extends. The rocker member is further provided with depending apertured ears 83 and 84. The jaw 77 has pivotally connected therewith at its juncture with the arm 79 on pivots 85 the free terminals of they side arms 86 of a yoke, the bight portion 87 of which is formed with laterally projecting apertured ears 88 and 89. A pair of links 90 are pivotallyconnected at 91 to the bight portion 87 and at 92 to the jaw 76 at the juncture of its arms 78 therewith. A flexible element,
v such-as acord or cable, is trained through the cars 89, 84, 83 and 8.8 and the free ends of its loads 93 and 9 4 are attached to the free ends of the derrick arms 70 and 71. With the jaws 76 and 77 in a closed condition, the rocker element is inclined in the position illustrated in Figure 15, while the ears 88 and 89 are disposed at a lesser relative inclined plane. The lead 93 of the cable or cord is se-' cured'in the car 84 such as by a set screw 95,
while the lead 94 is secured in the ear 88 such as by a set screw 96. From this construction, it follows that vertical relative movement between the free ends of the arms 70 and 71 swings the rocker element 81 from its inclined position illustrated inFigure 15 to its oppositely inclined position illustrated in Figure 13 at the same time swinging I the arm 118 the cars 88 and 89 to an approximate horizontal plane. This obviously effects a relative opening movement of the jaws 76 and '77.
It is apparent that a return movement of the free ends of the derrick arms 70 and 71 allows the jaws to gravitationally close and grasp articles which are disposed in the path of the jaws when closing.
In order to provide means for effecting transverse turning movement of the frame 40 onthe bracket 46, a crank arm 97 is secured to that end of the shaft 53 which projects outwardly beyond the frame arm 51 and the crank pin 98 of the crank arm operates in the slotted portion 99 of a thrust arm 100. The thrust arm is preferably provided with a section 101' adjustably connected therewith and the section 101 at its free end is connected to one arm-102 of abell crank lever 103 by a universal joint 104. The'bell crank lever S by the spring 48.

In orderto control the lateral swinging movement of the frame toward the left, a suitable stop means is provided whichin accordance with the present invention is placed under the control of the operator so that he may set the stop means to limit the lateral swinging movement of the frame and the p'arts'carried thereby at an estimated desired point where the grasping element will be disposed above article wanted. This stop means consists of a pawl 111 which is fulcrumed to the link 109 on a pivot 112. A
plate 113 having ratchet teeth 114 is suitably supported for engagement of the free end of the pawl with the teeth. ,As illustrated', the plate 113 is mounted on the rear wall 26 of the cabinet. The means for swingin}; theYpawl to vary the point of contact at which it'will engage the teeth consists of a shifting fork 115 which is fulcrumedat 116. The pawl extends between the tines or fur-' cations 117 of the fork or bifurcated terminal. of the. shifting fork. The shifting, fork is provided with a horizontal arm 118 having a weighted terminal 119. The opposite .end' ispivotally attached at 120 to an actuating" rod 121 which in the present instance is pivotally connected at122 at its opposite end to a crank arm 123 secured to a shaft 124 which extends forwardly'through the lower compartment 22 of the cabinet and thence through the front wall 37 thereofwhere the shaft is provided with suitable turning movements such as a wheel 125. For the-purpose of gauging. theshifting of the fork and pawl, may be extended'beyond the point 120 to provide ,a pointer 126' which works in conjunction'wit'h a gauge plate 127 havingv'suitable graduations 128 and indicia 12'9. rom'this, it follows that swinging wardly as viewed in Fi movement of the pointer arm 118 downre 12, moves the shifting fork 115 to the right in said figure.
'This'swings the pawl 111 to the right and obviously permits the frame to be moved under the influence of the spring 48 to a position laterally further toward the left of the cabinet. When the pointer arm 118 is swung upwardly to the limit of its movement, it is obvious that the pawl 111 will be swung to the left and will engage the ratchet teeth 114 termediately swung positions.
1 The shaft 57 which actuates the delivery mechanism may be driven in any desired manner for a predetermined number of revolutions through the medium of a coin controlled mechanism, As illustrated for the purposes of a complete disclosure of the invention, an electric motor 130 is employed which is mounted in the lower compartment I 22 of the cabinetand the motor shaft 131 is provided with a worm gear 132 which meshes with a worm wheel 133 keyed or otherwise secured to the lower end of the shaft 57. The circuit in which the motor is arranged and which is not illustrated includes a coin actuated switch 134 which is closed by the in sertion of a coin in the coin slot 135. The
switch remains in a closed condition for operating the motor until a suitable throw-off 'mechanism functions to open the switch.
The throw-off mechanism designated generally at 136 is operated by a worm gear 137 on the shaft 57 and a worm wheel 138 forming a part of the throw-ofi' mechanism. In order to counter-balance the weight of the grasping device and the derrick arms for the purpose of assisting the cam 64 in raising the derrick arms after the commodities and articles have been grasped thereby, a coiled contractile. spring 140 is attach'edat one end to an arm 141 on the arm 61 of the yoke 58, the opposite end of the spring being attached at 142 to the frame 40.
In operation, the vendee, preferably prior to or immediately following the insertion of the coin manipulates the wheel 125 to set the stop mechanism at the estimated desired point where the grasping element will pick up the prize 33 which is wanted. In its normal position, the frame 40 and the parts carried thereby will be disposed as illustrated in Figure 4, in which position the grasping device will be disposed overthe delivery chute with the jaws opened. As soon as the coin which has been deposited closes the circuit through the medium of the switch mechanism 134, the motor will effect a turning of the Through the medium of the worm gear and 7 wheel connections54 and 55, the shaft 53 will be turned in a counter clockwise direction.- The turning movementof the shaft 53v permits through the crank and thrust arm connection the spring 48 to turn the frame 40 laterally until the pawl 111-engages a ratchet tooth 114 on the plate 113. When this occurs further lateral movement of the frame 40 is prevented and consequentlythe grappling element and the derrick arms are arrested, from further lateral movement so that the said element is suspended over the estimated point of the supporting surface. The shaft 53 continues to turn, allowing the cam 64 which turns with the shaft 53 to move out of engagement with thearcuate arm 60. The yoke 58 under the weight of the derrick arms and grappling deviceis swung upwardly at its rear end while the derrick arms and grap pling element are lowered into contact with the commodities and prizes. In this position, the jaws 76 and 77.of the grasping device are opened. As the shaft 53 continues to rotate, the cam 73 turning with the shaft 53 engages the depending lug 7 2 and effects raising movement of the derrick arm 70 relative to the arms '7 1 to close the jaws of the grasping element to cause the same to grasp the commodities 32 and if. the vendees estimate is correct, one of the articles or'prizes 33. The shaft 53 continuing in its rotation causes the cam 64 h, againengage the arcuate arm 60 of the yoke 58 and gradually elevates the derrick arms 70 and 71 simultaneously with the grasping element jaws in closed relation. Further continued movement of the shaft 53 turns the crank arms 97 until the crank pin engages the inner-end of the slot 99 and thrust arm 100,. The crank pin then exerts a thrust on the thrust arm which in turn swings the arm 102 of the bell crank the bell crank lever 103 toward the right in Figure 4 exerting a right hand thrust on the link 109. Due to the fact that the link 109 is stationarily fulcrumed at 100, the frame 40 is moved laterally toward the right until the grasping element is swung to a position over the delivery chute 34. At this point, the cam 72 will have movedto a point where it rides out of engagement with the lug 72 of the lever 68 so that the derrick arm 70 moves downwardly with respect to the derrick arm 71. jaws T 6 and 77 of the grasping device and drops the commodities and articles which have been lifted thereby into the delivery chute for gravitational delivery. At this point, the throw-off mechanism 136 will function to open the circuit to the motor through the coin actuated switch 134 so that turning This obviously effects the opening of the A of the shaft 57 is discontinued until the next operation of the machine.

In a vending machine, a cabinet having a supporting surface upon which a variety of articles to be vended are arranged and displayed, a discharge chute opening through said surface at one side thereof, a delivery element, transversing means for moving the delivery element laterally in a horizontal plane over the articles from a point above the discharge chute and back to said point,- means independent of the transversing means and controllable by the vendee for stopping the article desired.

In a vending machine, a cabinet having a visible article supporting surface upon which a variety of articles to be vended are arranged and displayed, a delivery chute having its receiving mouth disposed adjacent one side of the supporting surface, a delivery mechanism including an element having a pair of jaws relatively moving respectively'to closed and opened positions for grasping and releasing the articles to be vended, and driving means including a shaft turnable in one direction for effecting successively the lateral movement of the element in a horizontal plane with the jaws opened, the lowering of the same into contact with the articles to be vended, the closing of the jaws to grasp said articles, the raising and lateral return movement of the element in a horizontal plane with the jaws closed to a position over the delivery chute and the opening of the jaws to discharge the articles into the delivery chute fo'r gravitational delivery to the vendee and means controllable by the vendee for setting the delivery mechanism to stop the lateral movement of the element at an estimated point above the article desired. 7
9. In a vending machine including a cabinet having a visible article supporting surface upon which a variety of articles to be vended are arranged and displayed and a discharge opening for receiving said articles, a delivery mechanism comprising an article grasping and releasing element, a driving means for causing the element to move in a horizontal plane from a normal position over the discharge opening to a predetermined position over the supporting surface and return to said normal position and manually operated means independent of the driving means for controlling the extent of movement of the element over the article supporting surface.
10. A delivery mechanism for a vending machine ofthe character set forth including a grasping element having a pair of jaws rela tively movable respectively to closed and opened positions for grasping and releasing the articles to be vended, a cable operatively connected with the jaws and having a pair of leads extending upwardly therefrom and pivoted arms to which the upper ends of the cable leads are connected, said arms adapted upon relative vertical movement to effect the opening and closing o fthe jaws, a tiltable yoke to which the arms are pivoted, a rotary shaft having a cam engageable with the yoke for permitting tilting thereof to raise and in said frame for rotation, a vertical driving 1 shaft operatively connected with the horizontal shaft for turning-the same, means connected with'the frame for normally turning the same laterally, a crank on the horizontal shaft, a slotted thrust arm connected to the frame and having the slotted portion engaged by the crank pin of said crank and means connected with the thrust arm for regulating the lateral turning movement of the frame.
12. In a delivery mechanism for a vending machine of the character set forth, a frame mounted for. lateral turning movement in a horizontal plane, a horizontal shaft j Ournaled in said frame for rotation, a vertical driving shaft operatively connected with the horizontal shaft for turning the same, means connected with the frame for normally turning the same laterally, a crank on the horizontal shaft, a slotted thrust arm connected to the frame and having the slotted portion engaged by the crank pin of said crank and means connected, with the thrust arm for regulating the lateral turning movement of the frame, said latter means including a bell crank pivoted to the frame having one of its arms connected to the thrust arm, a link pivoted to a stationary support and connected with the other arm of the bell crank, a pawl pivoted to said link, a stationary plate having ratchet teeth for engagement by the pawl and means for manuallyshifting the pawl to cause the same to en- I gage with a portion of the ratchet plate.
13. In a delivery mechanism for a vending machine of the character set forth, a frame, mounted for lateral turningvmovement in a horizontal plane, a horizontal shaft journaled in said frame for rotation, a vertical driving shaft operatively connected with the horizontal shaft for turning the same, means connected with the frame for normally turningthe same laterally, a crank on the horizontal shaft, a slotted thrust arm connected to the frame and having a slotted portion engaged by the crank pin of said crank and means connected with the thrust arm for regulating the lateral turning movement of the frame, said latter, means including a bell crank pivoted to the frame having one of its arms connected to the thrust arm, a link pivoted to a stationary support and connected with the other arm of the bell crank, a pawl pivoted to said link, a stationary plate having ratchet teeth for engagement by the pawl and means for manually shifting the pawl to cause the same to engage with a portion of the ratchet plate and indicatingmeans carried by the shifting means for visually disclosing the approximate point at which the frame will be stopped by the regulating means. I

A delivery mechanism for a vending machine of the character set forth including a supporting frame mounted for lateral turning movement in a horizontal plane, means for swinging the same in one direction, av horizontal shaft journaled in the frame for turning movement, means for turning said shaft in one direction, a tiltable yoke carried by the frame, a pair of derrick arms fulcrumed to the yoke. an article grasping element including a pair of jaws relatively movable to closed and opened positions for grasping and releasing the articles to be vended, a cable operatively connected with the free ends of the derrick arms and with the grasping element for opening and closing the jaws upon relative vertical movements of the derrick arms, a cam on the horizontal shaft cooperating with the yoke topermit a tilting of the same, a cam on said shaft operatively engaging with one of the derrick arms for effecting relative vertical movement of said arm with respect to the other derrick arm, a
crank on said horizontal shaft, a thrust arm having a slotted end engageable by the crank pin, a bell crank fulcrumed' to the supporting, frame having one of its arms connected with the thrust arm, a link'pivoted to a stationary support and pivotally connected to the other arm of the bell crank and interengaging means respectively connected with the link and witha stationary support cooperating with the link, the bell crank and the thrust arm for regulating. the lateral swinging movement of the frame in one direction, said crank and thrust arm cooperating with the bell crank and link to swing the frame laterally in the opposite direction.

horizontal shaft journaled in the frame'for turning movement, means for turning said shaft in one direction, a tiltable yoke carried by the frame, a pair of derrick arms fulcrumed to the yoke. an article grasping ele-' ment including a pair of jaws relatively movable to closed and opened positions for grasping and releasing thearticles to be vended, a cable operatively connected with the free ends of the derrick arms and with the grasping element for openingand closing the jaws upon relative vertical movements of the derrick arms, a cam on the horizontal shaft cooperating with the yoke to' permit a tilting of the same, a cam on said shaft olperatively engaging with oneof the derf'ic ing relative vertical movement of said arm with respect to the other derrick arm, a crank ing the lateral swinging movement of the frame in one direction, said crank and thrust arm cooperating with the bell crank 1 ,and link-tonswing the frame laterally in the opposite direction and means for controlling the regulating means to stop the lateral turning movement of the frame at an estimated point;
