SECTIONAL summon WALL This application is a division of my copending case, Serial No. 2,081, filed anuary Y ,13, 1925.; The invention relates to sectional furnace walls and will be best understood from the fOllOWiIlg. description and the annexed drawings. In these draw1ngs,1n which I have shown a selected embodiment of the invention i Fig. lis a vertical sectional view through a furnace and boiler, with the furnace Wall constructed according to this embodiment.
a Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical view taken from the front of a furnace wall constructed according to this invention. k Figggis a vlew on the line 33 ofFig. 2.
Fig. at is a rear view ofone form of the tile carrying. plates. 7 I Fig. 5 is a view on the line 5- 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a view corresponding to Fig.4,
but showing: a modified type of plate.
In Fig. 1 I have shown the invention. as
embodied'in a furnace having a combustion chamber ,1, to which fuel issupplied from a.-' burner 2,, here shownas a pulveriaed coal .gburner. The walls ofthe f irnacc extend in V a generally vertical direction, but are inclined f-;outwardly. Above the furnace chamber is .a-boiler 3 which may bev ofany suitable type ducts'isfdischarged beneath the floor 8 of the furnace, whence it rises through similar ducts in the side walls into a duct 9 which dis-f charges itjinto ducts 7 in the front'wall con-.- nected by suitable apertures 10tothe furnace (chamber.
and fromwhich the hot gases/pass through an outlet flue At after givingjup waste heat, to an air'heater 5. Thisheater isprovide'dwith a fan 6 by means of which airis forced. th'roughthe' heater and into Wall ducts 7.
These ductsare shownas placed inthe rear wall of thefurnace, and thea ir from these The walls comprise a plurality of vertically extending I-beams 11 which act as sup-' ports for transversely extending supporting. members 12' These members are shown as angle barsbolted tothe flanges of the I-beams,
and having slots 13 permitting relative move.-
ment between the members and the bolts 14." securing them to the I-beams. This arrange ment permits relative movement between the "held in proper position.
spaced, further from the I-beams' than their lower edges, as plainly shown in Fig. 3.
The arrangement is preferably such that each plate 16 will rest upon one supporting memher and leans, or outwardly'against the next higher iemberwhich thus prevents its outward movement.
Each plate 16 preferably supports a plurality of tile 17', the uppermost tile oneach plate overlapping thet'op edge of the plate andcontacting with the tile supported on the next higher plate, asplainly shown in Fig. 3. The tile may' befof thelform shown at 17 in Fig. .3, or theymay be inthe form sh'ow n at 18 and 19 in the same figure. The tile17 are plain fiat tile with the top one notched,
as shown at 20,' to' overlap the topedge ofthe "plate 16. ,QThf tile 18 andfl9, onthe other hand, arespecial tile'andit will be seeiithat they are much thicker. Thetile 18 is recessed,
asshown at 21, so as to receive the next lower tile, and, the-t le 19 has a recess 22 in which is received the bent out upper edge of the "plate x 16. f This dorms interlocking means'between the plate and thetile, and it will be seenthat by this arrangement the plates are adequately protected the tile from the; heatof the furnaceiindi at thesame tiin e,'the t;ile are -i' .li'eferrlng toFigs. 4L and 5, itwill belseen that-each of the plates 16 is providedwith outwardly extending ribs 23, which extend into the ducts 7 back of the inner wall. These "ducts are formed between I -beams '11 and the ,space left betweenthe rear or outward flanges .Z JQOf thfeI-beams and a, casing 25. The Jribs23, .partiallylclosethe spaces between thegpla tes 16, an'dlth e innerlflangesj 26 of the rbeam' ana thus, partiallydirect the flow of air lengthwise oftheductsf Theyia-lso' aid in cooling theapl atesliand consequently the tile V supported thereonglt will also. be seen that the plates are preferably provided with over- 1925, Serial No. 2,081.
