Description

July 1, 1930. J. WILLIAMSON LIGHTING FIXTURE Filed May 12, 1928 Patented July 1,- 1930 .UNITED STATES JAMES WILLIAMSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS LIGHTING FIXTURE Application filed May 12,
This invention relates to lighting fixtures and one of its objects is to providea fixture of simple construction which can be easily assembled for securing the parts rigidly tolg gether.
Another object is to provide the fixture with an auxiliary socket disposed in a convenient but inconspicuous position to receive a plug for temporarily connecting a floor I.) lamp, a table lamp, a vacuum cleaner, a radio receiving set or other device without interfering with the lamps of the fixture.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the invention embodied in a small 15 ceiling fixture and referring thereto,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the fixture, the body being partly broken away.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the position of the pendant when the plug is being inserted in the receptacle.
Referring to the drawings the body of the fixture comprises a lower part 5 and an upper part 5 and oppositely disposed arms 6 are secured to the lower part 5 by bolts 6. Canopies 7 are suspended from the arms and 30 they enclose the usual light sockets 8. A
cross bar 9 has upturned ends 10 to receive screw bolts 11 by which the cross bar is secured to the lower part of the body. A bolt 12 is mounted on the cross bar and has a 35 threaded upper end. The upperpart of the body has a rectangular opening 13 to receive the rectangular lower end 14 of the loop 14' and this lower end 14 has a threaded opening to receive the threaded upper end of the bolt 40 12 within the body.
The upper part of the body has a circular flange 15 at its edge which nests within a corresponding flange 15' at the upper edge of the lower part of the body. In assembling 45 these parts the bolt 12 is secured by nuts 16 rigidly to the cross bar 9, the upper part 5 is arranged on the lower part 5 of the body and the bolt 12 will register with the rectangular opening 13. Then the lower end of the 59 loop is inserted through the opening 13 and 1928. Serial No. 277,287.
engaged h the threaded uppe end o the bolt the loop is urned, tu g the Upp part of the body with it, to secure the loop tightly on the bolt. 7
The lower part 5 of the body converges to a central opening 17 surrounded by a flange 18. A threaded socket 19 is secured to the lower part of the body and within the body in alinement with the opening 17 to receive a receptacle 20, this receptacle being of any suitable commercial form to receive a commercial plug 21 which forms a connection for a lamp, or electrically driven device for household use. A pendant is suspended from the body and it comprises a yoke 22 having pivot pins 23 so which engage the flange 18 for pivotally connecting the pendant to the body. The lower member 24 of the pendant is engaged with a hook 25 on the yoke member 22 to swing with and relatively to the yoke member. In practice the pendant hangs straight down from the pivot pins 23, and it may swing on these pins. To permit the plug 21 to be inserted in the receptacle 20 the yoke member of the pendant is swung to a horizontal position, asshown in Fig. 4, and when the plug is inserted the yoke will rest against the plug holding the lower member of the pendant suspended in vertical position.
The arrangement of the receptacle substantially flush with the lower edge of the flange about the opening at the bottom of the body, practically conceals it from view except from directly under the fixture and then it is para ly concealed by the pendant. At the same time the receptacle is disposed in the most convenient position to receive a plug for connecting a lam or electric household device to the fixture Tor temporary use.
The invention is simple in construction and '1 convenient for use and while I have shown it in a simple form of two arm ceiling fixture I would have it understood that I reserve the right to embody the invention in other ceiling fixtures and in wall fixtures within the scope of the following claims:
I claim:
1. A lighting fixture comprising a body having an opening in the bottom thereof, a socket secured about said opening within the i body and adapted to receive a receptacle, and a pendant comprising a yoke pivotally hung on the body at the edge of said opening and adapted to be swung clear of the opening to permit a plug to be engaged with the receptacle.
2. A lighting fixture comprisin a body having an opening at its bottom an a flan e about said openin a socket secured about t e opening within t e body, a receptacle arranged in said opening and engaged with sai socket, and a pendant comprising a yoke, and ivot pins on the yoke engaged with said ange, said yoke adapted to be swung to a. horizontal position to permit a plug to m be engaged with said receptacle.
