Description
Patented July 1, 1930 UNITED STATES EDWARD n; LEHMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN'OR '10' W.=H. MINER, 1nd, OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE PATENT OFFER CAR CON STRUGTION Application filed December 26, 1929. Serial. NO. 416,390.v
forconnecting the body and truck bolsters of railway cars, having a detachable head member at one end thereof.
Another object of the invention isto provide a combined locking and center pin comprising a pair of outer members and a spreadmg member, the outer. members having shouldered engagement with the body and truck bolsters of a car to prevent separation thereof, wherein the shouldered engagement with one of the bolsters isobtained by anadjustable and detachable headmember on said outer members, thereby facilitating applicationand, removal of the pin.
Astill further object of the invention is to provide a center pin of the character described in the preceding paragraph, wherein the. adjustable head member is in the form ofa nutthreaded to the outer members and is, locked against removal by the filler memberhhaving shouldered engagement therewit Other objects of the invention will more clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following.
Figure l is a topplan View of my'improved center pin proper. Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the truck and body bolsters of a railway car illustrating my improved center pin' applied thereto, the section corresponding substantially to the line 22' of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a bottom plan view looking upwardly in Figure 2, the truck bolster being omitted in this view. And Figure t-is an elevational view of a combined filler and locking member employed inconnection with my'improved center pin.
In said drawings, 10 indicates the body bolster and 11 the truck bolsterof a railway car. The body and truck bolsters are of well known design, and are provided with the usuala'lined center pin receiving openings 12 and 13 respectively. The body bolster has the usual. downwardly projecting bearing member 14 on the lower side thereof cooperating with a bearing block 15 mounted on top of the. truck bolster. The bearing block l5 is provided with an upstanding annular rib. or flange 16 which engages within a pocket 17 provided on the bottom side of the body bolster. Beneath the opening 13 of the truck bolster, a pocket 18. is provided which accommodates the head at the bottom end of the center pin.
My improved center pin proper comprises broadly a pair of outer members A-A, a combined filler and locking member B and a detachable head member 0.
The two outer members AA are of. like design, each. comprising. a. shank portion extending through the pin receiving openings of the. bolsters and the block 15 and a partial head 19. at the upper. end thereof. The partial headl9'is in the form of an arcuate flange laterallyprojecting from the member A. As most clearly shown. inFigure 2, the flanges 1919 of. the two members A engage the upper surface ofthe body bolster and thereby preventdropping of the center pin and also serve in conjunction with the retaining means at the lower end. of the pin for preventing separation of the bolsters. The shank of. each member A is reduced at the bottom end, as indicated at 20, said reduced portion being screw threadedfas shown, the screw threads on onemember A forming a continuation of the threads of the other member.
The spreading meniber B- is in the form of an elongated plate of substantially the same width as the diameter" of the pin receiving openings of; the bolsters. As most clearly shown in Figure 4, the member B is of substantially uniform width throughout its height and has apair' of laterally projecting lugs 2121. at oppositev sides at the upper end'th'ereof. The lugs 21 are of substantially' the same height as the flanges 19-,-19 of the members A andform with said flanges 1919 'a continuous annular head member.
When the fillermember B is assembled with the members A by being inserted therebetween, the same serves to hold the members AA separated and together with said members forms the complete center pin. As shown in Figures- 1. and 2, the. complete. pin
is of substantially cylindrical cross section, the outer surfaces of the members AA being curved to correspond with the walls of the in receiving openings of the bolsters. In addition to serving as parts of the head of the pin, the lugs 21-21 prevent the member B from dropping through the openings of the bolsters.
The head member C, which is located at the bottoiiiend of the in, is in the form of a hexagonal nut and is screwed onto the threads 20 of the members A-A. As most clearly shown in Figure 3, the nut C is slotted interiorly at diametrically opposite sides as indicated at 22-22. The slots 22-22 are adapted to receive the bottom end of the fillermember B, whereby the nut is locked rotation with respect to the members A-A. As shown in Figure 2, the filler member is of greater length than the outer members A of the pin and projects a slight distance beyond the bottom ends of these members.
The screw threaded member C provides for ad'ustment in length of the pin, that is for adJuQtment of the distance between the heads at the o posite ends of the pin. In adjusting the and C, the filler member B is raised so as to withdraw the same from the slots 22--22 of the nut, whereupon the nut may be rotated to adjust the same either inwardly or oiitwardly along the threads of the members A. W'henthe nut has been adjusted to the desired extent, the slots 22, having been brou ht into alinement with the filler plate member, the latter is pushed downwardly engagement with said slots, thereby locking the head C against rotation with respect to the pin proper.
' In order to facilitate removal of the filler member and the outer members of the pin, each of these members is provided with an e e at the upper end of the same, the eye of filler member being indicated by 23 and the eyes of the outer members being indicated by 24--24.
In applying my improved center pm to the bolsters 10 and 11, the sections may be applied either through the top of the bod bolster, or through the bottom of the truc bolster. When applied through the body bolstar, the outer sections AA together with the filler member B may be inserted simultaneously, but the member B is raised slight- .ly, respect to the members A so that the lower end thereof will clear the reduced threaded portions of the members A. The
head C is then screwed onto the lower ends of the members A and the slots thereof registent! with the filler member B, whereupon the latter is forced downwardly so as to enter the slots and lock the nut or head C 3%:111513 removal. In applyin the pin throug the opening of the truck bolster, the two outer comprising members A are first inserted, the flanges 19-19 being of such a size that they will pass through the pin receiving openings of the bolsters when the filler member B is omitted. After the two members A have been completely inserted, the same are spread apart so as to engage the flanges 19-19 at the u per ends thereof over the top of the body liolster. The filler member is then applied by inserting the same between the outer members A-A, the same being entered from the top of the body bolster. The head C is then applied to the bottom ends of the members A and locked thereto, as hereinbefore pointed out.
In separating the bolsters, the pin is removed by first lifting the filler member to clear the nut or head C, and then rotating the nut so as to unscrew the same. After removal of the nut or head C, the sections may all be withdrawn through the body bolster or the filler member B may be first withdrawn upwardly through the body'bolsters and the members A-A dropped through the openings of the body and truck bolsters.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
