My invention-relates to mixing apparatus, andvmore particularly tov apparatus suitable for the mixing of feed for live stock, but it may be employed also .Y in theY mixing and conveying of other materials, and constitutes an improvement upon the disclosure of my PatentNo. 1,721,553, issued July 23, 1929. Heretofore in the use of mixersand conveyers of `,the vertically-disposed screw type, it has been deemed necessary to employ force feed apparatus to direct the material laterally into` the conveyer' conduit or, in the case of mixers, either to provide force feed for introducing the materiall to the screw kor yto introduce the material through thev top of the mixing chamber. In the case of forced feed apparatus, additional` power is required, while in both instances 2o it has been. necessary` to lift the bags of material in order to pour the material into thehopper Aof the feed apparatus or into the :top of the mixing chamber. 1

1n the drawing, I have shown a mixing chamber 3 having a hopperflike portion A and an extended cylindrical portion 5. The 4.0 cylindrical portion 5 is flared at itsA lower end to form a charging chamber 6. A shaft is vertically disposed centrally of the mixing chamber 3 and extends into the conveyer or hood portion 6 ofthe cylindrical conduit 5. A screw conveyer is carried by the shaft 7 and has an upper portion 8 thereof disposed within the cylindrical conduit 9 that is held in place withinthe chamber 3 by means of brace rods 10, 11 and 12.` The 5o screw conveyer has an intermediate enlarged portion 13 kdisposed within a shortvcylinder 14 that is mounted, inthe conically-shaped lower end or hood 15 of the cylinder 9 and functions asset forth in my said patent.

It hasV been found thatif the lower` end ofthe screw be of sufficient diameter, material lwill be advancedfrom the chamber6 upwardly, without the necessity forA forcing the vmaterial into suoli chamber. Again," if the pitch is sufficiently small, the material Awill also be forced up without the necessity of the force feed. By having the lower portion 16 of the screw both sufliciently wide f and small enough pitch, material is advanced upwardly more elfectivelythan if the screw were only widened in the cham-V ber' 6', or if it were of uniform diameter throughout its length and the pitch shortened in that portion lying within the chamber 6.
The diameter of the lower portion of the screw or its pitch, 4or both, willbe detervmined by the character of material to be j conveyed into the mixing chamber. v The chamber 6 is preferably disposed be low the Hoor level 18, to avoid the necessity for lifting the bagspof materials which are to be introduced therein. A hopper 19 extends upwardly through the floor 11 and at its lower end communicates with the cham ber 6 through the opening 2O in the wall thereof, `so that material dumped into the hopper 19 will be caught by the conveyor and elevated-to ythe mixing chamber.
Inrthe operation of the apparatus, sufficient material will be dumped into thehop- ,per 19 to yapproximately ll the mixing chamber 3 when itis conveyed theretoby the screw, andfsuch material will beconveyed by theportions 18 and 8 of the screw up.
