This invention relates to an improved fixture stud for use with outlet boxes, in the electric wiring of buildings and other structures, the function of such devices being to attach electric fixtures to the walls of outlet boxes or the like that are incorporated inthe conduit systems through which the electric wires are led.
The objects of the invention are to provide a fixture stud that is especially convenient of use in that it is capable of being applied to an outlet box after the latter has been installed in awall or ceiling; to provide a fixture stud that involves relatively adjustable parts be- 16 tween which the wall of the outlet box is adapted to be clamped and which arts are so connected together, designed an related that it is unnecessary to disassemble them for the purpose of attaching the stud to an outlet box or removing it therefrom; and to provide a fixture stud that is relatively small and compact, is simple of construction, cheap and substantial.
Other objects and advantages ofthe invention will appear as I proceed to describe the invention in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein Figs. 1 and 2 are elevational views, at right an les to each other, of my improved fixture stu Fig 3 is a plan view of the stud; Fig. 4 shows an outlet box in section and the fixture stud as being applied thereto from beneath; and Fig. 5 is a section through the outlet box and fixture stud with the latter clamped to the former.
The stud consists of a body portion 1, a clamping head 2, and a screw 3. The body portion has a flange 5 adjacent its upper end that is adapted to be engaged with the wall 6 of an outlet box 7 when a shallow boss 8, that rises from the body portion and is of a depth substantially equal to the thickness of the wall 6, is inserted within an opening 9 of said wall. The body portion 1 has a downwardly converging recess 10 that opens through the top of said portion and is adapted to receive the clamping head 2 when the latter is drawn downwardly by means of the screw 3 that is threaded through a tapped hole in the central portion of the head and whose shank operates Serial No. 282,419.
freely'within a bore 12 of the body portion that opens into said recess. The lower end of the body portion is counterbored at 13 for the accommodation of the head of the screw, the annular shoulder cdected by the bottom of the counterbore constituting an abutment against which the screw head bears.
It will be observed, especially from Figs. 2 and 3, that the clamping head 2 is relatively narrow, and that the recess l() is wide enough to comfortably receive said head, and it will be further noted, especially from Fig. 5, that the clamping head enlarges gradually from its lower end to rather abrupt shoulders 15 that joint abutments 16 which are in opposed relation to the aforesaid flange 5.
In preparing the device for the market, the parts ofthe stud are preferably connected together in the manner shown by inserting the screw 3 through the bore 12 of the body portion and applying to its upper end the clamping head 2, so that when furnished to the electrician it is in assembled condition. The electrician then has only to loosen the screw sufiiciently to extend the head, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, when the head may be inserted at an angle through the opening 9 after which the stud is adjusted to a position in which its boss 8 occupies the opening 9. Now, by turning the screw 3 in an appropriate direction by means of a screw driver the head 2 may be drawn downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 5 thereby to clamp the diametrically opposed parts of the wall 6 of the outlet box adjacent the opening 9 between 86 the abutments 16 ofthe head and the underlying portions of the flange 5 of the body portion 1. By setting up firmly on the screw 3 the stud may be very rigidly clamped to the outlet box and it is held against any lateral displacement by reason of the fact that the boss 8 fits within the hole 9.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A fixture stud comprising a body portion having a bore and an enlarged recess merging with said bore and opening through the upper end of the body portion, a relatively narrow clamping head having a part adapted to occupy said recess, the head and body portion having opposed abutments between which the wall ot' an outlet box is adapted to be clamped, the abutments on said head comprising outwardly projecting lingers adapted to be inserted through the openings in an outlet box, and means extending through the bore ot the body portion and connected to the head for adjusting the head axially of the body portion.
2. A iixture stud for use with an outlet box having an opening in its wall, said stud comprising a bddy portion provided with a boss ol a size to approximately tit said opening, the body portion having also an abutment Ator en 'ement with the wall adjacent said opening and a bore that is enlarged at its upper end to provide a recess, a clamping head shaped to be inserted through the openii in said outlet box, and having a part occniiiying said recess and provided with an abutment opii ed to the. abutment of the l ody portion, and means extending through t ie bore and connected to said clamping head for anja 'ng the. head axially ot the body poi-tion tor clanring the parts in the openin ,said outlet box.

A fixture stud for use with an outlet box having an opening in its wall, said stud comprising a body member exteriorly threaded at one end to receive a fixture, the opposite end being slightly larger than the opening in the outlet box, said body member having an aperture extending longitudinally therethrough terminating at its upper end in an enlarged relatively narrow recess, a relatively narrow clamping head having outwardly projecting fingers adapted to be inserted through the opening in the outlet box and engage the side of the wall opposite the body member, oppositely disposed shoulders on said fingers spaced to fit in the opening in said outlet box when the clamping head is arranged centrally therein, said head having a portion fitting within the recess whereby relative rotation of the body and head is prevented, and means extending through the bore of the body and attached to the head whereby the parts may be clamped securely in the opening of the outlet box.

A fixture stud for use with an outlet box having an opening, a clamping head provided with oppositely projecting portions adapted to be inserted through said opening, the under sides ot said portions converging downwardly whereby when the same has been inserted in the opening in an outlet box it tends to center itself therein with the projecting portions engaging the wall of the box surrounding the opening, a body member having an aperture into which said converging portion tits, the end of the body member being adapted to engage the opposite side ot' the wall of the box from the projecting portions, and a screw extending through the body member and engaging the clamping head for clamping them together in the opening of the outlet box.
