This invention relates to improvements in railroad ties and the main object is to provide a tie formed of metal and having simple and eflicient means for fastening the rails in place 5' without the use of bolts or spikes.
' A further object is to provide a tie of the above character in a simple and eflicient form which will be safe and practically indestructible in use.
The foregoing and other objects together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect will best be understood from the following description of a preferred embodi ment of the invention taken in connection 15 with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view, partially in section, of a tie constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged section along the 2 line 22 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the clamping block alone.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the tie comprises an elongated base 25 or beam 1 which is substantially Y-sha ed in cross section and which is of suflicient ength to extend beyond the rails 2 at each side thereof as shown. The base 1 comprises a vertical v web 3 having laterally projecting feet 4 along 3 its lower edge and laterally pro ecting wings 5 along its upper edge. It will be noted that the wings 5 do not extend directly outward in a horizontal plane from their junction with the web 3 but are first curved outwardly and upwardly as at 6 thus providing a medial channel or valley 7 along the top of the base, the purpose of which will be described. Clips 8 and 9 are riveted or otherwise fastened at 10 to the wings 5 and the outer edges of these clips are bent upwardly to provide hooks 11 which engage the inner flanges of the rails 2 when the same are set on the tie. The spacing between'the clips 8 and 9 may of course be varied to maintain the rails 2 in any desired spacing. A clamping bar 12 is provided and the same is substantially longer than the distance from'rail to rail and is provided at one end with a hook 13. The other end of this bar 12 is threaded as shown at 14 and a clamping block 15 is provided to slip over this end of the bar, the said block for this purpose having a bore l6. A hook 17 is pro.- vided on the block 15 as shown and a nut 18 is provided for threading on the end of the clamping bar 12.
It will now be understood that the clamping bar 12 may be disposed in the chanel or valley 7 with the hook 13 in engagement with the outer flange of one of they rails 2 and the "clamping block 15 slipped over the free end of the bar 12 with its hook 17 in engagement with the outer flange of the other rail in such manner that by tightening the nut 18 against the said clamping block 15 thej-rails will be securely held in place against the clips 8 and 9. To facilitate the engagementof the clamping bar 12 and its associated clamping elements with the rails, the wings 5 and an upper portion of the web 3 are cut away adjacent the ends of the base 1 as shown at 19 thus allowing convenient access to these elements as will be understood.
The tie thus formed may be seated in any 'desired form of roadbed as for instance concrete as shown at 20 in Figure 2 or the base 1 may be imbedded in concrete slabs (not shown) for placing in the usual rock or cinder roadbed. A series of apertures 21 are provided through the web 3 to cooperate with the feet 4 in providing for a firm bond of the concrete with the tie. Obviously the base 1 may be made in any desired length or of suflicient length to engage the base plate of a switch frog (not shown) as well as adjacent rails thus simplifying the laying of switches.
While I have herein set forth a certain preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor structural details, so as best to construct a practical device for the purposes intended, not departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. -In a railroad tie, a base having a channel, inner rail flange engaging clips secured to the base, a clamping bar disposed in the channel, an outer rail flange engaging hook at one end of the clamping bar and a clamping block adjustably mounted on the other end of the clamping bar.
2. In a railroad tie, a base substantially Y- shaped in cross section" and having a longitudinal channel in its upper side, rall engaging clips secured to the base, a clamping bar disposed in the said channel in the, base,'a rail engaging hook on one end of the clampin bar, and a rail engaging clamping block a justably mounted on the other end of the said clam ing bar.
