. This invention relates generallyto latches,
particularly designedffor vehicle doors, and
consists .of Certain novel features of construction, combinations. and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In order that maximum vision may be obtained, the
base of the strip 5 is preferably .secured di# rectly to the inner face of the pillar 2, yHence j j a wider glass panel 6 may be used.
Mounted upon the inner panel 4, preferably within a depressed portion 8 thereof, is a suitable latch having a wedge-shaped latchingbolt 10 which is adapted to engagey a suitable keeper (not shown) to hold the door in closed position. As shown, the bolt 10 is preferably'hollow and is arranged so that the rearwardly diverging arms 11 and 12 respectively thereof extend through suitable slots 13 and 14 respectively in the pillar 2 at opposite sides of the channel-shaped runway V5. The inner arm 12 of the bolt is preferably pivoted at its rear end to spaced lugs V15 struck out from the transversely eX- tending flange 16 of the case plate 17, while the outer arm 11 is adapted toswing between the runway and outer panel3. This pivot 28 is preferably carried by spaced lugs 29 projecting laterally from ,the upper and lower edges of the innerV arm- 12 ofthe bolt. Inorder that the crank portion 23 lof the spindle `will normally be in operative positionwith respectto the rear end of the slot 23 in the link 24,` a Vportion 30v of the casek plate is preferablypressed inwardly to form a stop for the crank portion 23 of the spindle, while a spring 31iis preferably used to hold the crank portion 23 aforesaid against .the stopL 30. As shown, this spring` 31 has an intermediate coil port-ion surrounding the spindle22 andfis. terminally secured to the spindle and case plate. v
For retracting the boltV 10 from theouter side of the door, I preferably provide a crank fao 32 having the inner arm 33 thereof extending throughank elongated slot 34 in the outer arm 11 of the bolt andvhavingtheV outer arm 35v thereof. rigidly secured to the shank 36 ofa suitable handle 37 This handle 37 lmay b e any suitable-construction but preferably has'an escutcheon plate 38 secured by screws 39 to the outer panel 3 of the door.
Any suitablemeans such as the spring40 vmay bewemployed for normally holding the handle 37Vin horizontal position so that the 5 linner arm' 33 of thecrank 32will ynormally be held in operative position against the rear end of the slot 34 in the outer arm 11 of the bolt. As shown, this spring has a coiled intermediate portion sleeved upon one of the screws 89 and is provided with projecting arms 41 and 42 respectively which bear against the crank32 and pillar 2.
Thus, from the foregoing description, it will be readily apparent that the operation of the bolt 10 will not interfer with the vertical movement of the glass'panel 6 at lany time. It will also be apparent that the inside and outside bolt retracting means may be independently operated;V Moreover rthe arrangement is suchr that a small case plate may be used, hencea substantially compact construction is provided. Furthermore the spindle 22 directly engages the link 24, hence the usual sliding shank is dispensed with entirely and the desired results are secured with the use of fewer parts.
f While it is believed that from the foregoing descriptiony the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, vand that such changes may be resorted towhen desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
` That I claim as my invention is:
l.: In a latch, thecombination'with a case plate, 'of a latching bolt having diverging arms, a pin connecting one of said arms to the case plate, said arm having a projection, a
pin carried by the projection,`and` actuating means' for the bolt includingI a spindle having a crank portion, and an operating connection between the spindle and bolt including a link'having a slot receiving the crank portion ofthe spindle andhaving an opening receiving the second mentioned pin.
y2.V In a latch, the combination with a case plate, cfa latching bolt having diveroing arms, means for actuating the bolt including isti an operating'handle having a crank portion at one end engageable with one of said arms, a lspindle journaled on the case plate and havinga crank portion, and an operating connection between the spindle and bolt including a link having a portion receiving the crank portion of the spindle.
3..In ala-tch, the combination with a bolt having diverging arms, and a projection upon one of said arms, of actuating means for said bolt including' a vertically disposedspindle having a crank portion, and an operating connection between said bolt and spindle including apin carried bythe projection aforesaid,and a link having a circular opening receiving the pin and having an elongated slot receiving the' crank portion of said spindle.
4. AIn a latch, the combination with a latch bolt,`having a pivoted arm and a projection uponsaid arm, ka vertically arranged spindle adjacent'to said bolt having a crank portion,
a pin carried by said projection, and a link having openings receiving said pin and the crank portion aforesaid of said spindle.
5. In a latch, the combination with a pivoted latch bolt, of a pin carried thereby, and actuating `means for said bolt including an upright spindle having a crank portion, and a link having a circular opening receiving said pin and having an elongated slot receiving the crank portion ofsaid spindle'.

In a latch, an upright v'spindle having a crank portion, an operating shank extending atsubstantially right angles to said spindle and having a crank portion at one end thereof, a latch bolt pivotally mounted adjacent said spindle and having a longitudinally eX- tending slot in a portion thereof receiving one of the crank portions aforesaid, and a link pivotally connected to said l'bolt and having a longitudinally extending slot therein receiving the other of the crank portions aforesaid.
