This invention relates to a multipolar oil break switch particularly adapted for use on high voltages, and the object of the invention is the provision of a switch of this type having a transverse or crossbar carrying knife blades or other contacts, and which is operated from a single point so that all the contacts are simultaneously actuated, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a multipolar oil break switch made in accordance with my invention.

Reerring to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the device made in accordance with my invention as therein illustrated comprises a lurality of insulating tubes a inclined in t e form of a pyramid and connected at their upper ends in a hub and at their lower ends by brace bars b. At the lower end of each of the insulating tubes a the same is fitted with a contact knife d or other form of contact. The upper ends of the insulating tubes a or the hub in which they are connected are mounted to slide on a guide rod g. The upper ends of the insulating tubes a arepivotally connected to one end of a link c, the opposite or upper end of which is pivotally connected to a lever f as indicated at the pivotal or Working point e which is the sole means of simultaneously actuating the insulating tubes and the knife blades or other contacts carried thereby.
By this structure as will be readily apparent, the apparatus may be designed to work on any voltage and to effect a substantial saving in the use of oil and of economy in space because of the compactness of the device.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the insulating tubes a are employed in sets, each comprising tubes disposed at an angle to each other and each set of tubes being connected to vthe hub h in positions spaced at-1200. The tubes a carry the knife blade contacts and slide on the guide rod g and are also connected by a link c to the operating lever f in a manner similar to ythat hereinbefore described. In this structure in order to further obviate the possibility of short circuits, the device may be provided with insulating partition walls indicated at 2.
In order torensure a more positive and quicker operation of the switch particularly in breaking the circuit, the guide rods as shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive may be provided with a spring member 7c cooperating between a nutl and the hub by which the insulating tubes and Contact members slide on the guides '51. The tension of the spring lc may be regulated by adjusting the position of the nut l with which it cooperates, thereby also controlling and determining the speed with which the switch may be f 'caused'to open. Also referring particularly toFigs. 7 and 8, it will be seen that instead of employing a single guide tube a pair of the saine maybe employed, and ofcourse, obviously, the number of guide members employed forms no part of the present invention. It will also be understood that inasmuch as the actuatingspring member are placed inside these guide members, the guide members act as protectors for the springs when the spring mechanism is used.
