IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o.l 176,858, dated May 2, 1876; application filed March 21, 1876.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, GUsTAv HAMPE and ADOLF SCHALLERT, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri', have invented a new and Improved Shutter, 'of which the following is a specification l In the'accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a window with our improved shutter letdown below the window-sill; and Fig. 2 isa vertical transverse section ofthe same -on line :l: w, Fig. l, the shutters in position to close the window. Our invention relates to improvedwindowshutters, that may be conveniently stored away in small and compact space at the lower part of the window, below the window-sill,
and readily raised to close the window partly or entirely, beinglnanufactured in cheaper manner, and operated with greater facility, than the interior sectional shutters at present in use.
The invention consists of a shutter made in sections,that slidev in guides of the windowcasing, and form a covered panel in front of the window-sill.
In the' drawing, A represents a window-casing, arranged with our improved sectional shutter B. 'y The window-casing A has at the inside ofthe window as many guides or grooves a as there are shutter-sections, the guides a running from the top o1' the window downto the door.
'Theshutter is preferably made of three sections, O; but two only, or more than three sections, may be employed, according` to the height of the window and the distance of the sill from the door.
Each shutter-section C slides up and downl by means of cords,pulleys, and weights, or
,without the same in the manner of windowsashes, the Weight-box of the same being extended to the full additional width required for the shutter. The sliding shutter-sections are made equal in height, or nearly so, to the distance of the sill from the door, and are to be stored in front of the window-panel below the sill.
The innermost shutter-section is made in the shape of a panel, as shown in Fig. l, Without slats, so as to form, when the shutter is opened and allthe sections stored back of the same, a cover or inclosure for the same. The uppermost shutter-section G is arranged at the upper edge with a horizontal board, D, that extends over the other shutter-section -in front, and forms the sill or top inclosure of the same.
The window may be readily closed in part, or throughout, by raising one, two, or all the sections, as desired. Y
When the shutter is entirely opened the sections are all stored away back of the innermost or panel shutter, at the lower part of the window in a neat and convenient manner.
They may be manufactured cheaper than the folding'inside shutters, as no hinges are
