This invention relates to wrenches and Y more particularly to wrenches of the type Li i which will tightly grip theiwork as pressure is applied to the `handle thereofr in a predetermined direction, movement of the handle in the opposite direction tending to loosen the jaws of the wrench from engagement with the work.
A further object of the invention is-to provide a quick adjustable wrench embodying a movable jaw provided with' a shank slid able over the main shank of the wrench having a right angular extension shdably mounted in a gu1de-way in the main shank,

Suitable securing screws 21 are extended through the body portion ci the shank, the inner end of the rack bar 20, and the inner end of the plate 19 and through the lug 17, extension 13, and plate 19 adjacent to the on-ter -or forward end thereof. The outer or forward end of the rack bar is preferably enlarged to provide an abutment block 2Q which engages the plate 19.
Both the extensionI 13 and the rack bar 20 yare provided with slots 23 for a purpose which will be later brought out. It is to be noted-that 'the slot defines a guide-way and that the toothed portion of the rack bar 20 is spaced from the plate 19 detining asecond guide-way ,241 which extends at right angles to the slot o r guide-way 23, and .these slots kcommunicate with one another.
Jllovable toward and away from the rigid jaw 15 is a movable jaw 30, which jaw is ,provided with an inner working iface 31 having grippingteeth, which are also preferably arranged on the arc ot a circle. In useoi';` the improved wrenchthe movable jaw shank 32 isr swung on the fulcrum 3/l whichy will move the tooth 39 of the pawl or dog 37 to allow the engagement with the teeth oit the rack bar 20, after which the movable 'jaw 30 is moved to its initial adjusted position relative to the rigid jaw 15 and in engagement with the work. rlhe aw 30 is now moved around the work to its working position (shown in Figures 1 and 3) and when the handle of the wrench is swung in a clockwise direction (referring to Figure 1 oi the dravings) `the yteeth of the rigid .and movable rjaws will grip the work and the movable jaw will be held in tight contact therewith and allow the easy turning oi the work.
When it is desired to remove the wrench from the work it is merely necessary to swing the wrench in a retrograde direction, namely a counter clockwise direction and the j aw 30 will be swung away from the work and thus allow the removal ot the wrench from the work.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen .that i have provided a .novel wrench for round work which can be `quickly adjusted on the work without the use of `feed nuts or screws which will tightly grip the work when in use. y
