which a pivoted dog swings between the arms of an inverted U-shaped member and'engages thesheets between itself and one of the arms of said member. 7 1 a The object of the invention is to provide a clip of this kind with a dog having its-engaging surface formed on a curve of long radius with means for stoppingthe movement of the dog before it fully engages the gripping surface.

A further object of the invention is to provide a clip of this kind with a dog having its engaging surface formed onthe curve of an Archimedes spiral with a stop adapted to engage the gripping surface before the dog makes locking contact therewith.

nother object of the invention is to providea dog of this kind witha stop adapted to engage the gripping member when there is no material in the clip but which is free from sheets in the clip.

To these and other ends the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed. out in the claims following the description.

I have provided means for preventing the gripping surface of the dog from falling into contact with the arm 2 and wedging thereagainst when no paper is in'the clip. In the present instance said means comprises a stop, short lug or projectionll on the dog 6, preferably at the upper end'of the curved surface 9, adapted to engage the clamping arm 2 just before the gripping surface on the dog engages the arm. By this arrangement, the dog is always free to move, and the inserted sheets can readily raise the dog and are passed between the gripping surfaces without inury. Y 1 While the invention 'has been described with reference to a particular embodiment, it is not limited to the specific disclosure shown, and this application is intended to cover such changes or modifications as come within the intent of the improvement of the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A clip for sheet material comprising a body member having a pair of spaced arms, a dog having a clamping portion pivoted to the end of one of said arms and movable by gravity to clamp one or more sheets between itand the other arm, and a stop adjacent to said clamping portion for engagement with said other arm to arrest the movement of the dog before its clamping portion engages said other arm so that the dog may yield more easily to permit one or more sheets to be inserted when engaged thereby.

2. A cli for sheet material comprising a body mem er having a pair of spaced arms, one of said arms having a slot, a dog having a clamping portion pivoted in the end of said slot and movableto clamp one or more sheets between it and the other arm, and a stop arranged on the dog opposite its pivot and adapted to engage said arm before its clamping portion engages therewith so that the dog may yield more easily to permit one or more sheets to be inserted when engaged thereby.

3. A clip for sheet material comprising a body member having a pair of spaced arms, a dog pivoted to one of said arms movable by gravitytoclamp one or more sheets between it and the other arm, said dog having a curved engaging surface formed on a curve of long radius, and a stop for arresting the movement of the dog before its curved engaging surface contacts with said other arm so that the dog may be freely moved by an engaging sheet.

4.-A clip for sheet material comprising an inverted U-shaped body member, one of the arms of said body member being slotted, a dog pivoted in the lower end of said slot and movable to clamp one or more sheets between on a curve of long radius to present a large clamping area to the sheets in all clamping positions, and a stop at the upper end of said curved surface to prevent wedging of the dog between the arms.

5. A clip for sheet material comprising a body member having a pair of divergent depending arms, ardog pivotally mounted on one of said arms and movable into clamping engagement with the other of said arms, a weight on said dog tending to move it into clamping engagement with said arm and adapted to limit its movement away from said arm, and a stop on the dog adapted to engage said arm for arresting the movement of the dog before it engages the arm.
