Description

w. DUBILIER conmmsfin kn Filed Sept; 5. 1924 June 24, 1930.
INVENTOR Mum/'1 ,DUB/l x51? ATTORNEY Patented I June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM DUBILIER, OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y., ASSIGNOR TO DUBILIEB CONDENSER CORPORATION, OI NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE CONDENSER xrr Application filed September 3, 1924. Serial No. 785,567.
This invention relates to an improved condenser kit; particularly a condenser kit for enablin one to determine quickly and accurately t e capacity required by an elecfield; but may be employed with circuits of any kind in which the exact capacity for efiicient operation must be ascertained.
The nature of theinvention is set forth in the followin description taken with the accompanying drawings, whereon,
Figure 1 is a top view of a condenser kit according to my invention, showing the casin with the top removed; and
liigure 2 is a section along the line .22 of Figure 1, showing the casing provided with a top or cover in closed position.
The same numerals identify the same partsthroughout.
1 In the particular description of what the drawings present, I employ the numeral 1 to indicate a casing such as a'box of wood or any other suitable material, which is closed at the bottom, sides and ends and is I provided with a hinged cover 2, at the top,
that may be raised at will, and held shut by any suitable fastening device not shown. Within the casing is aplurality of condensers 3, the capacity of each of which is known, and these condensers are removably mounted in thecasing in multiple with one another between a pair of parallel supportingmembers or bars of conductive material 4. These bars extend longitudinally of the the same time electrically connected with casing and their opposite extremities are bars in position in the casing 1. The heads of the screws 6 engage the extremities of the bars 4 and pass through the casing, carrying on their outer ends washers 7 and binding nuts 8. At one end of the casing, the screws are of slightly greater length, so that thumb nuts 9 can be screwed upon them to fasten thereto the conductors of an electric circuit; these longer screws with their thumb nuts 9 constituting terminals or binding posts. The two bars 4 carry means in the form of clips 10 of conductive material, disposed in transverse alinement, each of the clips carried by one bar being opposite a similar clip carried by the other bar; the clips 10 being intended for detachably' engaging the condensers 3, so that one or more of the condensers 3 can be removed at will; these clips each having a shank 1l,the end 12 of which can be secured by soldering, or in any other feasible manner, to one of the conductorbars 4.
As indicated in the drawings, the clips 10 are Ushaped and the end of each arm of the clips is widened somewhat as indicated at 13. Each condenser 3 is of well-known construction and consists of a stack of sheets of conductive material separated by insulation with cover "plates of insulation, it desired, on opposite faces of the stack, and with the opposite ends of each condenser having bearing plates 14. These bearing a condenser is mountedin the kit by inserting its opposite ends bearing the clamps 14 between any two opposing clips on the bars 4 so that the clips detachably engage the bearing plates 14, the condenser -isthen at the members 4 and can be placed in circuit :with' other electrical apparatus by joining conductors to the binding posts carrying the thumb nuts 9. K
In practice, the capacities of all of .the individual condensers 3 being known, one can determine by means of this kit the exact capacity required in a given circuit or at any point in a given circuit, to obtain the best results and most eflicient operation, all of the individual condensers being in parallel; and the totalcapacity is, of course, the sum of the capacities of the separate condensers. An experimenter can readily determine by taking out some of the condensers and otherwise manipulating the kit, just what number of condensers should be included in the circuit and what should be the total capacity of the condensers so included, to make the circuit operate to the best advantage. As soon as the operator thus finds by trial after having taken out some of the individual condensers and inserting others, thatthe circuit is working properly, he can at once ascertain what capacity is demanded by the condition of the circuit simply by adding the separate capacities of the condensers which are left in circuit between the bars 4. The kit is thus of great utility and advantage for experimenting and testing, and because it permits the operator to find the exact-capacity which.
any circuit needs in order to afford the mode of operation required.
Each of the clips being by virtue of the shank or stem 11 resiliently mounted upon the bars 4, the separate condensers can very easily be inserted and removed as occasion arises.
While the foregoing description sets out the best construction in which the principle of my invention can be embodied, I, of course, may vary the details to the full extent indicated by the broad meanings of the terms of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I believe to be new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A condenser kit comprising a casing having a pair of conductor bars therein disposed parallel to each other, clips of conductive material in transverse alinement secured to said bars, and condensers having bearing plates of conductive material at opposite ends thereof and joined to opposite poles of the condensers, so that said condensers can be detachably engaged by said clips in contact with said plates to connect said condensers to said bars.
2. A condenser kit comprising a casing having a pair of conductor bars therein disposed parallel to each other, clips of conductive material in transverse alinementsecured to said bars, and condensers having bearing plates of conductive material at opposite ends thereof and joined to op osite poles of the condensers, so that sai condensers can be detachably engaged By said
