UNITED STATESj GASPARD D. PILON, or normanna, Aningame, filialenel' i Application filed May 13,
The present invention relatesto novel fastening means and has for its primary object l to provide a pivotally adjustable fastener which may be conveniently adjusted to a fastening or a disconnecting position. v
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastening device embodying an elongated 'member mounted for frictional swinging movement to secure or release an article to a body carrying the fastening member.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener adapted for fastening garments and various other articles.
Still another object of the invention isthe provision of a fastener designed to replace the common form of fixed button providing a tapered Vmember which may be adjusted and conveniently inserted through a slit or buttonhole. y
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of the above character which will be simple and durable in construction and convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages ofthe invention will become apparent as the description progresses.V
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fastening member indetached position,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the fastener in garment securing position,
f Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the fastener in garment securing arrangement,
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the fastener disposed Vin a garment releasing postion, and f p Figure 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the fastening device is shown applied to a garment, as for instance an open front sweater having the overlapping portions 10 and 11, Y the portion 10 comprising the under for- 1929. *serial iro. 3572.772.
Ward margin while .the portion k1.1 indicates .the exterior portion whichoverlaps the un- `deriportion 10. The Afastening device embodies a vbody 12A of elongated form. tapered from theinner be fenlargedf end '13 to the Youter reduced end v14. The outer portionlec is formed withla gradual lateral taper toward .the vinter-medi-v ate section of thebody, the medial portion being designed to'provide inwardly curvedlO configurations vto provide an intermediate reduced Weight portion T15. vThe inner enlarged end 13 is generally in the formvof. a rounded knob, as clearly shown 4in VFigures 1 Aand 2. The bodyl is" also formedV with a` longitudinal and vertical yundulating curvature so that the intermediate .base portion 15 V'is .formed with an upward or outward arch',
while the end finger portion 14 isarched .downwardlyto providea .face contacting section. i V
'Below the enlarged knobv portion 15 is formed ya right angular, substantially fl'at `bearing member .or` ear 16, preferably of arcuate substantially semicircular form,= having a centrally disposed aperture 17.'
The ear Lportion 16of the fastener is pivotally connected with .the supporting garment fabric l0, or othercarryingbody, by Ameans of a link 18. The link 18 lis',pi'fefe-r- `ably formed of rigid metallic Amaterialihav- .'ingone section extending through the aperture in the Vbearing member '16 andthe side portions extended through thel carrying body and bent over yat the inner surface thereof to form a rectangular shaped connectingvmember, clearly shown in Figurei. The connecting link 18,` may, yhowever, formed of flexible material such as a thread of durable structure'.` l
In fastening position, kthe elongated body 12 is'slidably extended through a slot or but tonhole 19 formed in the complementaryy overlapping `section 11 of the garment to l95 secure the front divided portions of the Ygarment in closedk overlapping positions. The linlrLV connection 18 is disposed so as to tightly crush the arcuate edge of the bearing ear 16 against the exterior surface of the 100 carrying body to permit frictional swinging or pivotal adjustment of the fastener.
In use, to connect the body front portions of a garment, the fastener is swung to an outwardly directed position and the overlapping portion 11 of the garment disposed so that the slit or buttonhole 19 is slidably fitted over the extended fastener memberl and this portion of the garment is positioned over onto the under portion. The fastener is then swung inwardly so that the outer arched finger portion 14 will press against the outer surface of the overlapping garment material and will hold the same against disconnected movement. This construction will eliminate the difficulty of positioning the apertured portion of the garment over the fastener and will substantially reduce the deterioration of the button hole structure, as isvcustomary in t the use of the common form of buttons now employed and which must be forced through the buttonholes. Furthermore, the fastening operation may be effected very quickly and conveniently without damage to the garment.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes as, to the shape, size, and arrangement ofparts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A garment fastener adapted to be permanently secured to a garment, comprising an elongated body portion the middle of which is slightly convex and curved upwardly at one end, an enlargement at the other end of the body the under face of which is in line wit-h the under portion of the other end, a longitudinally disposed ear integral with the enlargement extending downwardly therefrom at right angles and having an aperture therethrough, and a link passed through said aperture and adapted to permanently secure the fastener to one flap of a garment, the fastener furthermore cooperating with a button hole in a corresponding iap of the garment to secure both flaps thereof when the body of the'fastener is inserted into the buttonhole.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
