A. ADAMS.
MOWING-MACHINE.
Patented May 2, 1876.
:IIIIIIJIII I N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. 0 C.
LMTIE STATES PATENT OF IcE.
ABRAM AD AMS, OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOWlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,824, dated May 2, 1876; application filed July 19, 1875 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAM ADAMS, of Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and in the State of Wisconsin, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Mowing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a mowing. machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
' In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mowing-machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views of parts thereof.
A represents the axle of my machine, on which are placetlthe two driving-wheels 'B B, one or both of which may be made fast on the axle, so that the axle will revolve when the machine is in motion. -On the axle A on the inner side of each wheel B is placed a sleeve, a,.having a feather, w, and on these sleeves are placed two frames, (J and D, the outer frame 0 being made'fast to the sleeves while the innerframe D turns thereon. The inner frame D extends in front and rear of and beyond the inner driving-wheel, and has the shoe E secured to its projecting ends. To the center of this shoe is hinged the finger-bar G, and the cutter-bar I slides thereon, the inner end of said cutter-bar being by a link, 0, connected with a slide, J, which moves in guides on the shoe E. On the slide J are two upright studs provided with friction-rollers b b operating on the cam 11 fixed upon the wheel L. This wheel is placed loosely on the end of the axle A, which projects beyond the inner driving-wheel for that purpose, and is thrown in gear with the same by a clutch, h. operated by a spring, z. On the outside of the rim of the wheel L is secured the zigzag cam 11, which works between the rollers b b, and has the inner corners rounded, as shown, to fit the rollers. The outer frame 0 has the tongue P secured on its inner side, and the inner frame I) is suspended from the tongue by a chain, m,'attached to a book, a, thereon.
By the use of the boxes or sleeves a the machine is held together without the use of bolts; and by the inside frame hanging on said boxes the cutter-bar is raised or lowered at the pleasure of the operator. The sleeves a can easily be removed and replaced by new ones when the parts become loose by wear.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v w The slide J with friction-rollers b b, and working in a groove in the shoe E under the cam-wheel, in combination with the cutter-bar I and cam d on the wheel L, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of July, 1875.
ABBAM ADAMS. [L. s.]
