NVENTOR ZaWrenceR. Wa Zm'z ATTORNEY Patented June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT orries LAWRENCE R. WATSON, OF PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOE TO M. 86 M. SALES & MFG. 60., INC., 015 PORTLAND, OREGON HYDRAULIC. FORCE CUP Application filed. June 25,
This invention relates to flushing devices for clearing waste pipes and drains, and has for an object the provision of a device by means of which water under pressure may be directed into a pipe or drain and the pressure utilized to break up accumulations, or force obstructions through said pipes or drains.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pipe clearing device which will utilize water pressure, or which may be manipulated after the manner of a suction pump of the type commonly known as the plumbers friend.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which includes a body of sectional formation, one section of which is made of metal or other inflexible material for attachment to a handle, and the other section made of flexible material and constructed to provide a suction chamber, together with means to detachably connect the sections so that the suction chamber section may be renewed without renewing the entire body.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a fragmentary view of a portion of a sink showing a slightly different form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the form of the invention shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts the body 1 is of sectional formation, the walls of the chamber 3' being formed of rubber. This chamber 3 occupies the rubber or flexible section 36 which is provided in its top with an opening 37. The neck 7 forms the other section of the body 1 and is preferably made of metal. This neck is provided with an interiorly threaded socket 8 for the reception of the handle 10% and with a recess 38 whose lower end is 1928. SerialNo. 287,932.
adapted to register with the opening 37. A clamping plate 39 has its edges engaged with the walls of the chamber 3 around the opening 37 and serves to clamp this portion of the section 36 against the inner face of an annular flange 40 extending around the neck 7 The flange '40 is preferably provided with an, annular bead 41 which enters an annular groove 42 provided in the section 36, the latter being recessed around its upper edge as at 43 to receive the flange 40. The plate 39 is removably connected with the metallic or inflexible section of the body by means of a bolt 44 and a nut 44.
Communicating with the recess 38 is the inner end of a nipple 45 which is adapted for connection with a flexible pipe 46, and the clamping plate 39 is provided withopenings 47 so that water may pass intothe chamber 3.
WVhen the device is connected as shown in Figure 1, the handle 10 serves to hold the lower edge of the suction chamber in proper contact around the drain pipe, pressure upon the handle serving for this purpose. A leakproof joint is thus effected between the sink and the lower edge of the chamber 3 around the drain pipe, so that pressure of water passing through the pipe 46 will be directed into the drain pipe upon any obstructions therein, the pressure being equal to the amount of pressure from the water main.
The device may also be used in the ordinary manner, without water pressure. For this purpose, the device is provided with a plug (not shown). The pipe 46 is detached and the plug inserted in the end of the nipple 45, whereupon the device may be manipulated or pumped up and down through the use of the handle 10 to cause air within the drain pipe to pulsate and thus assist in the removal of obstructions.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. In a waste pipe cleaner, a chambered body open at the bottom and having flexible side walls and an opening in its top, an inflexible member having a recess in its lower end for register with the opening in the top of the body and a handle receiving socket in its upper end, an apertured clamping plate removably connected with said, inflexible member to engage and clamp the upper edge if the chambered body to said inflexible mem- 2. In a waste pipe cleaner, a chambered body open at the bottom and having flexible side walls and an opening in its top, an inflexible member having a recess in its lower end for register with the opening in the top of the body and a handle receiving socket'in its upper end, an apertured clamping plate removably connected with said inflexible member to engage and clamp the upper edge of the chambered body to said inflexible member and a hose attaching nipple forming a part of and extending from the inflexible body and having its inner end in communication with the recess.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
