Description
G. CARR JOURNAL Luamcnon June 24, 1930.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lubricating devices primarily adapted for application within journal boxes and the like.
An object of the invention contemplates the provision of a baflle arranged adjacent the journal to prevent accumulation of waste between the journal and the brass.
Another object of the invention comprehends a guard for the baffle.
'An additional object of the invention embodies an adjusting element for the battle whereby friction and clearance there-between may be regulated. I
More specifically stated the baflle and guard are provided with attaching means carried upon the brass for the journal.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction,
to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure l-is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a journal box and wedge therefor illustrating the application of the present invention upon the brass for the journal.
Figure 2 is a vertical horizontal sectional 39 .view taken "on line 22 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a perspective View of the invention per se.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the conventional form of axle for railway rolling stock, and which carries wheels 11 upon the ends thereof and from which have projecting centrally thereof in alignment with the axles and in oppositely disposed relation thereto, journals 12 wholly disposed within journal boxes 13; all of the above is of the usual and well known construction employed in the present forms of rolling stock. A wedge 14 and brass 15 are also arranged within, each of the journal boxes to engage and space the journal 12 from the journal box. a
The invention comprises .a'plate member 6 having openings 17 arranged at spaced intervals adjacent the upper side edge thereof and which accommodate cap screws or other fastening elements, such as indicated at 18, removably connected with the sides of the brass 15.
It not infrequently happens that hot boxes in the journals of railway rolling stock are caused by the collecting of ,waste and other absorbent packings, employed in the journal box, finding their way around, and upon the journals against'and between said journals r and the brass therefor. It is my intentionto overcome this difficulty by the employment of the plates 16 upon the brasses having the bristles 19 arranged and shaped as best shown in Figure 2' of the drawing whereby the waste saturated with oils or other lubricants could not adhere to and follow around with the journals for final disposition between the journals and the brasses therefor.
By reason of the fact that the brush portions formed by the bristles 19 are eonca-ved. a very close fit between the extremities of the bristles and the outer surface of the j our nal may be facilitated whereby the smallest portions or lintels of'the waste willbe retarded.
- lubricated incident to rotary content therethrough 0 caition of the journal and prevention of waste nuts 24; carried upon the outermost The line plates 20, incident to their perticuler' shapes end dis ositions with respect to the plates 16, will prevent pressure of the Waste against the plates 16 but the flanges 22 will hold e quantity of the saturated waste in position for, engagement with the journal whereby the letter willhe with, v v v As a further requisite for the proper lubriand other peckingseol-lecting between the journelendhress therefor, l have. employed adjusting elements'for the plates 16,1in the nature of shaft s Suohshufts are con 7 new be forced against the lower exposed por- I luhricetor end replenished et reguler ntertion of the journal in order that edditionel luhricsnt rney he epplied thereto, 1 V Rolling'stoeh equipped WilllillihlS t out vels with suiteihle quantities of luhrieent would keep the journals in Worhng order and hot hoses would never occur incident to the collecting oft waste and other psefings between the journel end'the hrss's therefor, p
