TYPEWRITING MACHINE Filed Feb. 21. 1928 WITNESSES INVENTOR W g Mk Patented June 24, 1930 7 UNITED STA'iES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE o. GOING, or MnmLnrowN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR'TO REMINGTON TYPE- WRITER COMPANY, or rLIoN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION on EW oax 'TYPEWRITING MACHINE Application filed February 21, 1928. Serial No. 255,971.
My invention'relates to type actuating mechanism adapted particularly to type-- writing machines and other machines employing printing type bars. The object of the invention generallystated is to provide type-bar actuating-mechanism which is substantially noiseless in operation and is moreover readily adapted to small. typewriting machines commo'nl called portable typewriters. A further ob ect of the invention may be said to provide a modified construction of the type actuating mechanism which forms the subject-matter of my prior; application Sr. No. 254,744, filed February 16, 1928.. j 1
To the above and other ends which will subsequently appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices, and arran ements of parts hereinafter described an particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred form of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a front-to-rear fragmentary vertical sectional view taken about centrally of a typewriting machine embodying my invention, only so much of the machine bein shown as is necessary to a full understan ing% of said invention.
ig. 2 is a view showing a type action in operated position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on a plane indicated by. the section line 1-j-1 in Fig. 2 and looking-in the direction of the arrows at said line.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a modification.
The type bars are pivoted in an arc ofa circle and arranged to strike on the front upper quarter of the platen. Each type bar 1 is adapted to turn about a fixed pivotal center, the full set of type bars being preferably pivoted on an arcuate pivot wire 2-wire is mounted on a t pe bar support or segment 3 of any suitabe construction. The type bars may be disposed in guide slots 4, cut radially in the segment 3, the I latter inclining upward and rearward towards the platen 5 which is diagrammatically illustrated and is mounted on a'suitable traveling carriage, not shown. Each ty e bar carries a type block 6 which is pre erably provided with two types 7 and 8, the former being the lowercase, and the latter the upper case type. Normally the lower case types 7 are effective to print, but the upper case types 8 may be rendered operative at will by relatively shifting the platen and the type bars in a known manner;. as for example, by a shift of the platen as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. As is well known, the type bars at and near the middle of the set or system 'are' substantially straight throughout their lengths, while as the ends of the system are approached the type bars are bent near their type ends to varying extents in order to bring them in proper relationship with the printing points on the platen.
Key actuated means are provided for op- The operating means portion of ashoe-like part 13 of an angular lever 14 having a fixed pivot 15 and an upwardl extending rearwardly inclined arm 16. verted U and loosely houses and covers-the rear arm portion of the lever 9, the con struction providing a yielding or lost motion connection between'the key lever 9 and the sub-lever 14 and also preventing accidental derangement or disconnection of the two parts. The upper arm 16 of the sublever is pivotally connected at 17 with the rear end of a link 18, the front end whereof is pivotally connected at 19 with the upper arm of a second sub-lever 20. The set of sub-levers 20 are preferably arranged in guide'slots 21 cut radially in an .arcuate rib or lug 22 formedintegrally with the seg ment 3 and projecting from the rear face thereof. An arcuate pivot wire 23 is seated he shoe portion is shaped like an in 'dotted line position 1.
in a hole extending throughout the rib and bridges the guide slots 21 therein, said wire 23-providing a common pivot for the set of sub-levers 20. The longer'arm of each of these sub-levers curves downward and forward and is pivotally connected at 24 with the rear end of a link 25 which extendsforward and is pivotally connected at 26 with a member 27 which is also pivotally connected at 28 with a downward extension 1.
from the type bar. Preferably the member 27 is slotted to receive the end portions of the parts 25 and 1 and the cross pins or rivets 26 and 28 are secured in the members 27 at opposite sides of the slotted portions thereof, said pins passing loosely through the parts 25 and 1*. Normally, the set of type bars 1 extend forward and incline upward, their type ends being in contact with a rest or support 29 made of an arcuate ,strip of fibre or other suitable composition which is seated orv housed in a stationary segmental support or rest 30. While each turn on its fulcrum 10, actuating the sublever 14, transmitting a pull to the link 18 which will be effective to actuate the sublever 20, the lower arm of said lever operating to thrust or push the link 25 forward, transmitting an operating movement through the member 27 to the type bar 1 which will thereby be swung about its pivot 2 from a position of rest towards the platen. Preferably the key lever is arrested by an underlying stop 31 before the type bar reaches the platen, as will be understood fmFi.2.hihh' th'kl m g w c S OWS 8 6y ever In is threaded into a hole in the forward face of contact with the stop 31, the type bar at the moment of such contact being in the The lost .motion connection between the contact face 12 and the shoe 13 permits the type bar to continue its movement to printing position after the key lever has been arrested. After operation the parts ofthe type action are restored to normal position by means comprising a coiled spring 32 having its opposlte ends hooked through holes and the upper arms of the associate sub levers 14 and 20, "the spring being disposed prefer ably justbelow the associate link 18.
In add tion to the train of actuating devlces above described, each type bar is associated with controlling means whereby it is slowed down as it approaches the. platen and is caused to coact with the platen with a minimum of noise and to be pressed a ainst the platen with suflicient force to e ect a proper imprint of the type. The controlling its type end and provides a pivotal connec-.
tion between the type bar and the two-part link 33. The opposite ends of the arms 33 curve downward and loosely embrace the sides of the rear end portion of the associate link 34 which is made in a single piece. The downwardly curving ends are fixedly connected by a cross pin or rivet 36 which passes loosely through a hole in. the link 34 and provides a pivotal connection between the llIlkS 33 and 34. Normally as seen-in Fig. 1, the two links are! closely folded, the link 34 extending forward and upward under the link 33 and the type bar, and having a fixed pivot or anchorage 37 at its forward end. The said forward end is preferably received in a kerf or guide slot formed in a hanger 38, the pivot pin 37 bridging the slot in said hanger. The set of hangers 38 are adjust-4 ably supported in slots 39 cut radially in the a segment 40. The construction is such that 3.'Cl0SG 'COI1Il8Ct-l0ll 41, 42 is established between the hanger 38 and the adjusting screw 43, 44 so that when the screw is threaded in or out the hanger is slid or adjusted in its slot-way to a corresponding extent. In order .to hold the hanger 38 in adjusted position, clamping plates or washers 45 arearranged over the tops of the hangers, bridging the slots 39, said plates being secured in place by screws 46. If preferred a single arcuate plate secured by a suflicient number of screws may be employed for the whole set of hangers.
In addition to the toggle 33, '34 the controlling means comprises a second toggle, one link of which is constituted by the member 27, the other link 47 being composed of two parallel arms or parts 47* which loosely vides a pivotal connection betweeuthe' two parts or links 27 and 47, while the pin 49,
likewise passes loosely through a hole in the link 34 and serves as a pivotal connection between said link 34 and the link 47 In order to prevent overthrow of the linkages a spring .by the Wei "27 will be to slow down the type bar and cause it to contact operatively with the stop is preferably provided, constituted by a shouldered rivet 50 which is, secured to the free ends of spring arms 51 preferably formed integrally with the parts or arms 47 and so isposed that the stop 50' will coact with an edge or face of the member 27 when the parts are in operated position as shown in Fig. 2.
Upon depression of one of the keys the train of actuating devices will operate as has been described, causin the connected type bar to swing on its plvot 2 from the Fig. 1 position so that at the moment of arrest of the key lever 9 the type bar will be close'to the platen in the dotted line position indicated at 1. During this operation of the type bar by its actuating devices, the controlling means comprising the two pairs of toggles 33, 34 and 27, 47 will be gradually opened or straightened as the result of their connection with the type bar and with the link 25. The energy acquired ghted member 27 and other parts in the train 'of controlling mechanism as well as the momentumof the type bar itself, in moving from the normal to the 1 position, will be suflicient to complete the movement of the type bar to the printing position subsequent to the arrest of the key lever. The effect of the straightening of the toggle 33, 34 in moving to this position combined with the action of the other toggle 47 platen with a minimum of noise. However, the momentum of the'member 27 and connected parts will be effective to communi cate sufficient pressure to the operating type to cause it to print fully and clearly. It will be seen that in the printing-position the pivotal points 35, 36 and 37 will be nearly or substantially in line but that overthrow will be prevented by the members 47, 27 whose pivotal points 49, 48 and 28 will be prevented from aligning exactly by the coaction of the stop device 50 with the contiguousface of the part 27. After the printing operation, the parts will be restored to normal position assisted by their own reaction, the effect of the restoring spring and the force of gravity.
It will be understood that the printingwill be effected through the usual inking ribbon which will be controlled by any desired mechanism that may be found suitable for the purpose, although the ribbon and its mechanism are omitted from the drawing.
Changes may be effected without departing from the scope of my invention, and an example of such changes is shown in the modification illustrated in Fig. 4. In this modified construction the type bar itself and the train of key operated actuating devices, as well as the two sets of toggles whichare vend portions of the links 33 and 34 have a slightly different shape in order better to accommodate associate'parts. However, the
Fig. 4 construction differs from the Figs.
1-3 construction in that the link 47 instead of being connected to the link 34 as at 49, is reset or adjusted about its pivot 48, being disconnected from the link 34 and pivotally connected instead at the point 52 to the link 33 just to the rear of its pivotal connection 36 with the link 34. T e effect of this change is to give a more direct-effect of the member 27 and associate parts on the toggle 33, 34.
It will be observed that by the-present invention the drive link or actuating link 25 is connected to the weighted tog le member 27 and not directly to the type Ear; that said link derives motion directly from an angular lever having a fixed fulcrum, preferably on the type-bar segment itself, said lever in turn being linked to a second lever which is actuated by the key lever itself logs;
through a rolling contact,'the construction affording a slow'start and increasing speed until the type bar approaches close to the platen, from which point the double-toggle controlling-mechanism is effective to slow down the type bar and cause it. to meet quietly with the platen but with an effective printing pressure; also, that the weighted toggle member27 is pivoted directly to the type bar, and its associate link 47 is connected to the main toggle, in one instance (Figs. 1-3) to the lower link thereof, and in the other instance (Fig. 4) to the upper link thereof; that the stop for preventlng overthrow is spring-mounted on the second link of the weighted toggle; that the return spring isv directl connected toboth of the sub-levers; and t at the main toggle is con nected directly tothe type bar and to a fixed pivot or anchorage which is adjustable so as I,
to control the contactive engagement of the printing types with the platen. f
Besides the changes heretofore described in connection with Fig. 4 other changes 80 L comprised in the controlling means, are of may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
