My invention relates Vto boat anchor hoists and has for its object to provide adevice by means of which theusual boat anchor rope maybe guided so as to hold the same away from the side of the boat and by means of which the rope may be locked from movement when the anchor is in raised position.
Another object of the invention resides'in providing a device whereby the-.boat anchor rope may be readily manipulated from any position within the boatproper.`

The invention proper consists of ay supporting structure 14 which comprises a platelike member l5` adapted to be placed upon the gunwale` 11,V as bestjshown in Fig. 1. It will beunoted in Fig. 4 that the bridge-likemember ,24 is beveled as indicated at 43 to further aid inA locking the-rope so as to hold the anchor in desired elevated position.- When it is desired to release the rope, the free end 42 thereof is drawn sufficiently backfto disengage. the rope from 'the particular .groove 32 in whoh it may have been ylodged and the rope is'then moved alignment with the groove 41 so as to cause the same to travel along sal'ld groove.l The anchor may then be raised Aand lowered as before. Inorder -to reduce the tendency of-'the'rope to cli-mb the flange 25, the projections 34 have been provided which, upon engagement with the rope, throw the same back into the groove 41.
The advantages of my invention are manifest. An extremely simple and ositive dcvice is provided whereby the anc or rope of a boat may be readily and conveniently manipulated by the user in Vany position within the boat. The user may also remain seated while operating the device, thereby adding to the safety ofthe occupants, rhe holding device serves to firmly hold the anchor rope and the Vgreater the weight of the anchor the firmer the same is held. The device may be constructed at aV nominal cost and can be either -detachably or permanently secured to the boat structure, A The y'dev-ice 4serves to di'- rect the rope away from the .side of the boat, thereby preventing injury to `the paint or vcovering on the boat and at the same time -preventingunnecessary wear upon` the rope. Several sizes of.l rope may be used with my invention sothat different sizes ofthe device .are unnecessary for any one type of. boat.
Changes in the specific form of myinven tion, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from thespirit of my invention. Having described -my Y invention, what I claim as new .and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: A y y 1. A ,rope locking device comprising a rotatable member formed in "halves, said halves being arranged face tofface, one of said halves a boat, clamps formed attaching the same to the guiiwale, said plateoverhanging portion having Va flange formed witha spiral groove, the `other of' said halves havingV a similar flange, said members forming in conjunction with one another municating with said spiral groove, and a fixed member positioned in proximity to the periphery of said rotatable member for cooperation with said spiral groove to hold a rope locked therein.

A rope lockingdevice comprising a rotatablemember formed in halves,-said halves being arranged face to face, one of said halves on said rotatable member, va second rotatable member having a hub and a flange formed thereon, a series of projections formed on the inner face of the flange of' one of said members, and a series of spiral grooves formed in the flange of said'other member, said grooves commencing at the hub of said member and extending toward the periphery of said flange, said hubs forming in conjunction with said flanges an annular groove communicating with said spiral grooves, Vand as lixed member cooperating with'said spiral grooves for locking the rope.
