CONTAINER WITH ATTACHED CIRCULAR Filed June 19, 1926 Patented' .lune 24, 1930 v UNITED'SNTATES PATENT ,oFFicE PAUL F. PAIGE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, AISSIGNOR TO FORBES LITHOGRAPH IANU- Y FACTU'BING COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION 0F MAS- SACHUSETTS CONTAINER WITH ATTACHED CIRCULAR l application inea :une '19,`
This invention relates to containers, and especiallyto cartons or cans in which commodities are packaged for sale and the object is to provide in connection with such a container a writing, usually in the nature of a circular or advertisement addressed to the purchaser, attached exteriorly to the container in such vva manner as to remain in position while, the container is handled in the course of trade, yet being readily accessible to the purchaser. Thus, for instance, the writing may be a folder containing instructions or suggestions as to the use of the commodity packaged in the container.
My invention will be readily understood from the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein I have shown a 'writing attached to a cylindrical container in the nature ofa can, the combination constituting a specific embodiment of my invention. In these drawings- Fig. 1 is an'end elevation of the folder separated from the container and shown partly unfolded for clearness;
Fig. 2 is a perspective on a somewhat smaller scaleof the .container withy the folder secured thereto; and
F ig. 3 is'a plan view showing the folder opened, as by a purchaser, and with part broken away.
In the example of my invention herein shown the writing which is attached to the can 5 is shown as a folder formed from a single piece of paper. Such folder may embody a front 7 and a back 9 connected along a hin e line 11 at `the left. The front 7 may ave a marginal extension, herein. shown as a flap 13 connected to one edge only of said front, that opposite the hinge line 11, and adapted to be folded downwardly and under and which may, as herein shown,
overlap the edge of the back 9. The rear-` wardly facing surfaces of the back 9 and of the flap 13 are adhesively secured to the outer-.wall of the container, being shown in Fig. 2 as secured to one of the circular ends or bases of the cylindrical can. When the customer receives the package in the form 192e. serial No. 117,044.
shown in Fig. 2, he may open the folder by.
severing the fla 13 from the edge of the front 7 and, if esired, as indicated in that ligure, directions so to do may be printed along the margin of the front 7. The front 7 may then be lifted like the cover of a book and'thrown over toward the left in the manner indicated in Fig. 3, exposing the clean fresh printing at the interior.
To provide for a greater amount of printed` matter than could be printed on the small folio 7-9 additional pages may be housed between the front and back. I have back 9 may, if it is desired to preserve them,`
be readily separated from the back which remains attached to the container.
It will be seen from the preceding description that the pages of the circular or folder are-confined closely to the container in such a manner that it is not likely to be damaged or pulled -off in the handling which the container receives in shipment and merchandisin In the form illustrated the front 7 is' su stantially smooth and unbroken and not likely to be caughtand torn and it affords a surface well adapted to receive display printing or an attractive design. At` the same' time the folder is readily accessible to the customer to be opened and perused when desired. ,i In the case of a can such as is illustrated in Fig. 2 having a marginal bead 17 Athe circular may be placed within the circumference of the bead and will be protected thereby and vin such instance may form a booklet of considerable thickness.
It will be understood thatthe yprinted matter may comprise letter-press ofv any desired tenor or. ornamental or instructive embodiment of my invention illustrated as an example thereof in the accompanying drawings without intending thereby to limit the scope of my invention to the form shown and specifically described, I will express in the following claims what I consider new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
Claims:

In combination with a container a 10 booklet-like folder having a back and a front,said front having a marginal portion folded over rearwardly, the back and said portion being secured to the container and said front and back presenting dsconnected top and bottom edges providing for insertion of a tool for severance of said portion from vthe said front, such severance per-` mitting the front to be raised for inspection of the interior of the folder.1
2. In combination with a container a booklet-like folder having a back and a t front, said front having ,a marginal portion folded over rearwardly, the back and said portion being secured to the container and said front and back presenting disconnected top and bottom edges providing for insertion of a tool for severance of said portion from the said front, such severance permitting the front to be raised for inspection of the interior -of the folder, said folder having additional pages carried between the front and back.
3. In combination with a container a booklet-like folder having a back and a front, said front having a marginal portion folded over rearwardly, the back and said portion being secured to the container and `said front and back presenting disconnected top and bottom edges providing for insertion of a tool for severance of said portion from the said front, such severance permitting the front to be raised for inspection of the interior of the folder, said back having an extension providing additional pages folded between said front and back.
- 4. In combination with a container a booklet-like folder having a back and a front, said front having a marginal portion folded projecting part to retain the same against the back, severance of said flap permitting the frontto be raised for inspection of the folded projectin part.
