This invention relates to an4 ornamental chain of the type used for braceletsand the Y like; and has for its object to provide a construction by which the units may be securely connected together and yet readily detachable by manual manipulation without the use of tools. 'Y
A further object of the invention is the provision of a catch part on one of the links with a compressible part attached to the next adjacent link and engageable with the catChpart, the compressible part being acshaped link.
Figure 3 isa perspective View of the connecting link.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the assembly shown in Figures 2 and 3 and also illustrating the extendible unit attached theretowvhich is broken away to show its Y internal parts.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the parts of the extendible unit.
Figure 6 is a perspective viewvof another part slidable relative thereto.
Figure 7 is a sectional side view" of the box link with a connecting link attached thereto. 1 y
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the con necting link attached to the 'eXtendible box link and positioned inthe non-extendible Vbox link of the type illustrated in Figure 2.
In watch bracelets, it is desirable to pro-v vide a bracelet which when attached tothe watch will lit the normal-size of the wrist,V
to accomplish which it is desired to have links which may be very easily and quickly detached one from the other to'add links to the bracelet to lengthen it or to remove links 192s.. serial no. 284,871.
therefrom to shorten it. In such a construc- Y the muscular action therein, it being understood that in removing the bracelet and watch from the wrist that the bracelet will be disconnected bymeans of a center catch` or the like intermediate the ends which are connected to the watch.; and the following is a detailed description of one constructiony of my V detachable links by which theseadvvantageous results may be accomplished:
With referenceto the drawings, 1() designates a bracelet which `is provided with watch ho0ks`11 and 12 at either end thereof andV a centerk clasp 13 l intermediate these hooks by which the braceletmay loedisconnected for the purpose of positioning or removing the watch on the wrist of the wearer. Extendible units 14 are provided at either end and adjacent the centerv catch which consist of a-box linkf15 with a slide link 16 positioned therein between which a spring 17 acts by engagement with ther abutments 18 and'19, respectively, on' these two links. The links 20 of the bracelet are illustrated inperspective in Figure 2 and have top walls 21 and side walls 22 with inwardlyextending `flanges 23, each being provided with a finger catch 24 extending from the inner edge of the flange toward the top wall. V vHingedly connected to the ears 25' is a connecting link 26 having Iears 27 thru which a rivet pin 28 passes to secure the two parts in pivoted relation. This link is provided with arms 29`which are folded as Vat 30l lto extend back upon themselves to form compressible parts 31, Vwhich parts are connected by means of a bar 32 extending between the ends of these folded back portions, l
Each of the compressible parts may eX- Y tend thru the end of the boX link and the barf32 will snap'beneath and engage the linger catches 24 on the flanges 23 when nonl compressed. i This bar-32 extends across the opening 33 between the flanges 28 and is i ioo thus positioned to be readily accessible by pressure of the thumb to receive compression and permit detachment of the parts one from the other.
It is, of course, understood that the connecting link 26 as illustrated in Figure 3, may be secured to the ears ,35 of the extendible unit, as illustrated in Figure 8, to hingedly connect the extendible unit to the non-extendible unit as desired.
lThe foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims. Y
I claim i Y 1. In an ornamental chain, aplurality of units each having side walls, a projecting connector member hinged tol the side walls of one unit and extendible into anr adjacent unit between the side walls thereof, said connector member having a compressiblo part, said adjacent unit having aninwardly extending catch part adapted to be engager by said compressible partto lock the units together. l n
2. In an ornamental chain, a plurality of units each having side walls, a projecting v connector member hinged to the side walls ofone unit and extendibleinto an adjacent unit between the side walls thereof, said adjacent unit having an inwardly extendingA catch part, and a coinpressible lpartron said connector member adapted to engage said catch part to lock the units together, said compressible part having a portion exposed to permit compression thereof for detaching the units.
Y 3. In an ornamental chain, a plurality of units each rhaving sidewalls, a projecting connector member hinged to the 'side walls of one unit and extendible into an adjacent unit between the side walls thereof, said adjacent unit havinO` spaced inwardly extending catch parts, and a compressible part on said connector member adapted to engage said catch `parts to lock the units together, said compressible parthaving a portion positioned between said catch parts and exposed to permit compression thereof for detaching the units. 1
4l. In an ornamental chain, a plurality of box links, each having inwardly extending catch parts, a connector member hinged to the side walls of each box link having a compressible part formed by folding a portion of its stockupon itself to vobtain the inherent resiliency thereof and engageable with said catch parts when non-compressed, said compressible part having a portion thereof exposed for manual compression thereof for detachment of said links.
5.
