My invention relates to protective devices 7 for hydrometers and particularly to a structure intended and adapted for use in protecting the glass barrel of syringe hydrometers such as are used in testing battery solutionsand the like.
An object of this invention is to provide a protective device which can be applied upon various types of hydrometers and which will protect the glass hydrometer barrel ad acent the nozzle.
Another object is to so form and con-. struct the parts that a better connectlon will be provided at the point of attachment between the barrel and nozzle. With the above and other ob ects 1n view which will be apparent to those skilled in the I art, my invention includes certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter set forth in connection with the drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a viewin perspective showinga hydrometer constructed in accordance with my invention. I
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view ofthe nozzle end of the hydrometer structure with, parts broken away to better shown the construction and mounting of the elements.
7 of the glass barrel is exposedin such a manner that it is likely to become broken during the assembly oft-he parts andfwh en the instrument is in use. 1
With the above in mind I propose to pro-- vide a protective device which tection against breakage of the glass barrel and will also protect against leakage ofjthe will give proliquid from the barrel by forming a better connection between the parts.
I In the present instance I have shown m invention applied in conjunction with a hydrometer of the ordinary glass barrel syringe type, in which the. glass barrel 1 adapted to mounted at one end anda nozzle 4: fitted at the remaining end. Thisno-zzle 4," referring tothe disclosure in Figs. 1 and 2 has a plug portion 5 adapted to be pushed into the open endof the'barrel -1 to mount thenozzle4 in 00., or CHI- contain the float-element 2. has a bulb 3 place and close the end of the barrel; how
ever, as pointed out above the'stopper portion 5 ofiers no protection for the endof the barrel-l and this portion will shrink in use sufliciently to permit leakage of liquid from the barrel while tests are being made.
A fiangeportion 6 is provided around the I nozzle 4 adjacent the plug portion and'a pro tective sleeve 7 is fitted upon the end of barrel 1 to embrace and contact with the flange 6. With the protective sleeve mounted in this manner the end of the barrel 1 is protected against contact and shocks which would cause breakagdandthe portion of thesleeve 7 fit:
ting tightly in contact with flange 6 Will pro vide a double seal againstthe leakage of liq 'ui'd from the nozzle end of the barrel. Any
shrinkage inthematerial of the flange 6 will not cause leakage as the iprotective sleeve 7 will shrinkcorrespondingly anda tight connection and contact is thus maintained at all times. This protective ring? can be. formed with a head '8 or other extending portion to cooperatewith thebulb 3 in raising the unprotected middle portionofthe barrel 1 from gqontact with a .flat'or somewhat rounded surace. V, r
*With the modified construction illustrated'eo a in Fig. 3 theflange 6? on thenozzle portion diameter slightly larger'than the outside-diameter of the glass barrel 1 andlwhentheprotective sleeve 7 a is fittedin place over this .flange it will be slightly stretchedand placed under tension so thata liquid-tight contact i I and connection will bemaintained at all times.
. 4*. adjacent the plugflportion 15, is madeof. a
tion and is made polygonal to present fiat sides which will prevent rolling. V
WVith the parts as illustrated in Fig. 4 the head flange 8 is provided around the nozzle portion l adjacent the plug portion 5 and the protective ring 7* fitted on the end of the glass barrel 1* is brought into contact with the bead portion of the nozzle to entirely cover the end of the glass barrel.
As the parts are illustrated in Fig. 5, the flange 6 on the nozzle portion 4 adjacent the plug portion 5 is of a diameter corresponding substantially to the endof the barrel 1. The protective sleeve 7 c is adapted to be fitted in place to be threaded or slipped over the nozzle end and the flange 8 holdsthe parts assembled. I
In assembling the parts of my invention the protective ring 7, 7 or 7 can be fitted upon the end of the glass barrel and the plug portion 5, 5 or 5 of the nozzle member is then fitted in place within the end of the glass barrel following which the protective sleeve or ring 7, 7 a or 7* is slid downwardly along the glass barrel to the proper contact with the nozzle member. While I have herein shown and described only certain specific embodiments of my invention and have suggested only certain possible modifications, it will be appreciated that many changes and variations can be made in the form, construction, arrangement and signature.

assembly of the parts Without departing from'the'spirit and scope of my invention. I claim: 1. In combination'with a hydr'ometer having a frangible barrel, a nozzle provided with a plug portion to be fitted into one end of the barrel, and a protective sleeve fitted on said end of the barrel in contact with the noz-' zle portion adjacent the plug thereof.
2. In combination with a hydrometer having a frangible barrel, a nozzle provided with a plug portion to be fitted into one end of the barrel, and a protective sleeve fitted on'said end of the barrel in contact with the nozzle portion adjacent the plug thereof, said nozzle portion having a flange with which said protective sleeve engages.
' 8. Irvith a frangible hydrometer barrel, a nozzle provided with a plug portion to fit within one end of the barrel, said nozzle having a flange portion extending adjacent the end of the barrel when the plug portion is in place, and a protective sleeve fitted upon the end of said barrel andin contact with the flange portion of the nozzle.
' 4c. IVith a frangible hydrometer barrel, a nozzle provided with aplug portion to fit Within'one end of the barrel,-said nozzle havinga flange portion extending adjacent the end of the barrel when the plug portionis in place, and a protective-sleeve fitted upon the end of said barrel andrin contact with the flange portion ofthe nozzle, saidprotective w.
