Description

June 24, 1930; \`T. J. WEAVER AHouma SUPPORT ANDSPRAY Filed 001'.. 16. 1928 lllllllllllll abbozmq Patented June 224, 1930 .UNITED "STATES PATENT MICEv THOMAS WEAVEB., OF TROVO, UTAH vivozzLE sUrronr AND SPRAY v Application led October 16,71928. Serial No. 312,797. v
The invention relates to combined nozzle supports and sprays, forinstance for con- Y charge nozzle carried by the head for deflecting and spraying liquid discharged from the nozzle.
A further object is to imbed the upper end of the stake in the head during the molding operation for securely anchoring the head on the stake.
A further object is to form the deflecting member from a single pieceof sheet material bent to form a sleeve through which the stake extends and a deflecting member ex'- tending angularly upwardly andl terminating forwardly ofthe discharge nozzle.
VA further object is to form the deflecting member from a single piece of material, the opposite sides of which are bent inwardly to positions for forming opposite sides of the sleeve in parallel relation and the lcor- V ners bent inwardly to form triangularly shaped members overlying the rear side of the stake for formingv the rear side of the ju'sting the sleeve upwardly and downwardlyin relation to the discharge nozzle.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combinationand arrangement of parts as hereinafter set 15 forth, shown in the drawing,V described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of'what is claimed without departing from the spirit of thev invention.
.head threaded thereon.
Figure l is a perspective view Vof a portionof a' hose showing the,v device applied thereto. Y
l Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the head and deiiecting member.
. Figure 3 is a perspective of the deflecting member. Y
i Figure 4L is a vertical transverseV sectional view through the head taken on ,line 4 4: of Figure y V Figure 5 is a plan View of the blank from which the deflector is formed. y. Referring to lthe drawing the numeral l designates the end of a conventionalfform of hose of the garden type andQ the nozzle Thenozzle head 2 is' provided Vwith a downwardly extending stakeB, the upper end of which `is provided with a bifurcation 4 in which is disposed ther tubular discharge nozzle 5. In the Course of manufacture the stake and nozzle 5 are placed in engagementr with each other, and afterwhich the head 2 iscast around the same, thereby materially reducing the costfof manufacture. 7 The lower end'of the stake 3 is provided with a point 6 so the-same maybe easily forced into the ground for supporting the nozzle and hose endQA Slidably mounted on the stake 3 and adjustable towards and away from the discharge end ofthe nozzle 5 is a deflecting plate 7, whichjinclines upwardly and` outl.d
wardlyin relation to the ynozzle 5`Vand den iiects ina stream or spray liquid lprojected againstjthe same -underpressure' fromA the nozzle 5, thereby distributing in a'sheet or spray liquid over a relatively wide arca, for instance a lawn. Byi adjustably, mounting the dei'lecting' plate on the stake fitis obvious that itm'ayg bie-adjustedV in relation to the"l discharge end ofthe nozzle 5 for varying l the `water Hdciection v according to the lawn area desired tohe'covered. vThe defleeting member 7 is provided with a'sleeve 8 in which the vstake .31 frictionally engagesv and the lsleeveV 8 as well asl the delecting member 7 lis formed"fromasingle .sheet of A, metal as shown in Figure 5. The sheet Zis first bent on the dotted lines 9 so that the triangular portions 10 will engage the face of the sheet, after which the corners areA bent outwardly on the lines 11 which will be in parallel relation for forming the side walls 12 of the sleeve 8, which walls will also be in parallel relation as shown in Figure 3.
After the forming of the side walls 12, the corner members 13 are bent inwardly towards each other on the lines 1/1', thereby forming triangular shaped members which overlie the rear side of the stake 3 and finally the device so formed is bent at 15 and 16 to incline the deflecting member 7 upwardly and outwardly, as clearlyV shown in Figure 2, however it will be seen that the upper portions of the members 1() will rigidly brace the deflecting member, and at the same time if so desired the angularity of the deflecting member 7 may be varied by further bending on the lines 16.V After forming the deflecting member shown in Figure 3, the stake 13 is forced through the sleeve 8, which sleeve frictionally engages the stake, and then the triangular members 13 are preferably connected together by a drop of solder 17, which not only secures the members 13 together but forms a finger engaging member adapted to be grasped by the operator for adjusting the deflecting member to .various positions on the stake. 1f so desired a second drop of solder 18 may be placed on the front side of the sleeve to act as a finger engaging member for adjusting .the deflector, however this may be eliminated if desired. A drop of solder 17 is not shown in Figure 3 but in dotted lines in Figure 1 for purposes of clarity. f
From the above it will be seen that a spraying and deflecting device is provided which is slidably mounted on a stake whereby itmay be adjusted to various positions in relation to a discharge nozzle andsaid stake not only supports the discharge nozzle but also the deflecting member. 1t will also be seen that the deflecting member and its sleeve are formed from a single piece of sheet metal bent to form, thereby allowing `the same to be cheaply manufactured andv sold.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new, and useful isi 1. The combination with a discharge. nozzle having a discharge port, a sta-ke carried by said nozzle at an angle to said discharge port, of a deflecting memberKV forwardly ofy the nozzle, said deflecting member being adjustably mounted on theV stake, whereby it may be adjusted transversely in relation to the axis of the discharge nozzle. n
2. The combination with a discharge nozzle, a downwardly extending stake carried by said discharge nozzle,of a deflecting plate, said deflecting plate being adjustably f gularly disposed stake carried by said nozzle, of a water deflecting plate, said plate being disposed to one side of the nozzle and inclining upwardly and outwardly and terminating forwardly of the nozzle, a sleeve carried by said plate, said sleeve being frictionally held in various positions on the stake at different distances in relation to the nozzle.
In testimony whereof 1 hereunto aflix my signature.
