The invention further contemplates the combination with the cap of soft pliable material such as rubber, of a layer of stifier material such as hard rubber, which may be connected thereto in any suitable manner" such as by vulcanization. This reenforcement is intended for the purpose of reventing the pliable cap from sagging or ending under the weight of the parts connected thereto whenever the container is of considerable size.
The invention still further contemplates the provision of certain forms of thecap through the cap, in order to insure that no v leakage of the liquid occurs.
In the referred forms of the invention as shown 1n the drawings, I provide'a container 1, which is preferably of glass, the upper end of which is provided with threads 2 adopted to be engagedby a sleeve orring or cover member 3, this ring being provided with a flange 4 which extends inwardly a short distance sufiicient to extend over the u per edge of the. cap. This flange is adapted, as the ring 3 engages with the .u per end of the container 1, to bearon t e periphery of a closure cap 5. This closure cap .is preferably made of any suitable 10o pliable material such as soft rubber, although, of course, it may be made of hard rubber. This cap is provided with nipples such as 6, preferably formed integral with the cap and of substantial height compared to their width. These nipples are pierced to permit the passage therethrough of the upper ends 7 and 8 of the electrodes of the battery.
In some forms of the cap I provide a dependent flange such as 9 which fits snugly within and against the inner walls of the container 1 so as to further insure 'a tight joint between the cap and the container. In certain forms of the cap I also provide a recess 10 cut out of the under surface of the cap so that liquid which may be formed on the upper ends of the electrodes will have a longer path to travel to get out through the joint than otherwise, and in this respect the liability of leakage is further reduced. In another form of the invention, shown in Fig. 4, the container 13 is provided with threads 14 engageable with a ring 15 having an inwardly extending flange 16 adapted to bear on the periphery of a cap 17, preferably of soft rubber. This cap, however, is provided with a reenforcing layer 18 of, preferably, stifl'er material, such as hard rubber,
which is preferably vulcanized thereto. This cap 17 is also provided with nipples 19 through the upper ends 20 and 21 of which the battery electrodes extend. It will be noted in Fig. 4 that the lower edge of the cap 17 extends straight across the top of the container.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 the cap 17 is provided with a layer 18 of reenforcing material, and nipples 19. In this form, however, the cap is provided on its under surface with a dependent flange 22, as well as a recess 23 on its under surface. This recess is formed for the same purpose as the recess 10 previously mentioned. The cap 17 1s also provided with a filling aperture 24 and a vent hole 25;
In the form of the cap 17 shown in Fig. 7 the lower edge of the dependent flange 22 extends straight across without being provided with a recess 23.
The reason why the layer of reenforcing material, such-assrubber, is'applied'or vulcanized to the cap of softermaterial is to .give it the proper stiffness whenever the cap is to be used on the ends of containers of substantial diameter where the liability of a vsoftrcap to sagor bend is greater than/with A smaller sized containers.
In the general contem lation of the invention, therefore, it can" e observed. that I provide a cap which is laid on the upper. end of the container and, held thereon by the engagement' therewith of part of a. ring which embraces the u per end of the container, this part pre erably being an inwardly extending flange. It will be noted, however, that this flange extends only far enough inwardly to engage the edge of the cap and does not interfere with the area 00- cupied by the nipples, so that the ring can be screwed on tightly against the cap without affecting the position of the nipples. Therefore the closure can be made very tight without the liability of the ca being twisted. The elimination of this liability prevents the parts of the battery connected to the cap rom getting out of alinement.
What I claim is 1. A battery construction, which comprises a cap of pliable material adapted to be placed across the open end of a battery container and to rest on the upper edge thereof, a dependent flange formed on the under surface of the cap, said flange adapted to provide a shoulder to bear against the inner upper edge of the container to form a tightjoint therewith and means engageable with' said cap to force the latter into contact with the upper edge of said container.
2. A battery construction, which comprises a cap of pliable material adapted to be placed across the open end of a battery container and to rest on the upper edges thereof, a dependent flange formed onthe under surface of the cap, said flange adapted to provide a shoulder to bear against the inner upper edge of the container to form a tight joint therewith, and a layer of stiffer material attached to the cap to reenforce the same.
' 3. A battery construction, which comprises a cap of pliable material adapted to be placed across the open end of a battery container and to rest on the upper edges thereof, a dependent flange formed on the under surface of the cap, said flange adapted to provide a shoulder to bear against the inner edge of the container to form a tight joint therewith, a layer of stiffer material attached to the cap to reenforce the same, and a plurality of apertured nipples. formed on the cap permitting the passage therethrough of the upper ends of the battery electrodes.
4. A ,battery construction, which comprises a capof pliable material adapted to be placed across the open end of a battery container and to rest onthe upper edges thereof, a dependent flange formed ,on the under surface of the cap, said flange adapted to provide a shoulder to bear against the inner upper edge of the-container toform a tight jointtherewith, :a layer of stifier material attached to the cap to reenforce the same, and a plurality 'ofapertured nipples face provided with a recess across the area occupled by the nipples whereby lealrnalge of liquid through the joint is substanti y eliminated.
5. A storage battery comprising a container having a screw top and containir positive and negative plates having upstan ing terminals or posts, a cover composed of a relatively soft member having integral bosses through which the extend and in which they are tightly fitted to form a seal, and a relatively hard member adapted to be screwed onto the to of the container and serving to clamp e relatively soft member onto the container, said member having a central 0 ening through which said bosses and terminals extend.

A cover adapted to engage a cell jar comprising a flat portion adapted to engage the top of the 'ar, an annular portion for engaging the side of the jar, a projection on the flat lpprtion for enga a post, the projection ing integral with the flat portion and compris' material which is more pliable than the t portion, whereby the projection may frictionally position a post and be the sole means for supporting it within said jar.
' 7. In combination, a storage cell having one end thereof openand having the exterior portion threaded ad'acent said open end, plates within the a cover having a top portion and .a flanged portion, the flanged portion being interiory threaded for engaging the threaded portion of the jar, said cover being sufliciently pliable on the top' portion to provide a leak-proof joint with the jar and to be the sole means 'for positioning the-cell plates, and theflanged 4o portion being sufliciently rigid to prevent withdrawalof the cover from the jar without unscrewing the threaded portion.
8. A battery construction, 'which comprises a container provided with a sc'rewthreaded end portion,=a ca of pliable material adapted to be pl across the open endof said container and to rest upon the upper edge thereof, said cap having formedintegral therewith a depending flange adapted to bear a inst the inner up r portlon of said container, and a screwed cover member cooperating with the screwthreaded portion of said container and having a portion enga ble" with said cap to hold the latter ngi y in contact with the upper edge of said container.
