This invention relates to internal combustion engines and more particularly to 011- ing systems therefor.
There is always the possibility of gritdamaging the bearings of an internal combustion engine even though the oil may be frequently renewed and to overcome this possibility various designs of oil filtering and refining systems have been used. Substantially all of such systems have the inherent disadvantage that they require personal attention, and where the personal equation enters into such matters the filtering and cleansing devices seldom, if ever, receive the attention requisite to place them in condition so that they may 1plroperly perform their intended function. ence, the resent invention proposes to couple a "ltering or cleansing device with the drain of'the crank case, so that when the crank case is drained pgriodically the filter or refining device will ponent parts so that its manufacture is ecoautomatically cleansed."

Another object of the invention is to provide an oil filter housed within the crank case of an internal combustion engine and connected in the oiling system thereof and to the drainof the crank case-so that upon opening the crank case drain the filter is automatically cleansed.

Suitably secured on the housing is a cover 34 having positioned on the bottom thereof a stud 35 on which is arranged in spaced relation a plurality of plates 36 engaging the slots in themember 31 so that the slots are brushed and cleansed'upon rotation of the member 31. The cover is provided with a chamber 37 communicating through an annular opening 38 with the upper end of the passages in the member 31. The chamber 37 has an outlet port 39 adapted to be connected by a pipeline to the manifold of the oiling system and an intake port 40 is provided for admitting oil from a pipe line through which oil is fed under pressure to a chamber 41 in the cover communicating with the housing'20 in which the filtering element is ositioned.

The upper end of the sha 44 extends upwardly through the crank case and is provided with a suitable handle 47 by means of which the shafts are rotated to open and close the valve controlling the drain 14 in the bottom of the crank case. It is to be observed that in opening and closing the valve the filter element is rotated and that the finger or plates en aging the slots in the 'or stationary, hence the slots are automatically cleansed upon the opening and closing of the valve.
Although this invention has been described in connection with certain specific embodiments, the princi les involved are susceptible of, numerous ot or applications that will readily occur to persons skilled in the art. The invention is, therefore, to be limited only as indic'atedby the scope of the appended.

Having thus described'the various features of my invention, what I claim as new.
and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. In combination with an-internal combustion engine having an oiling system and a drain therefor, a filter connected in the oiling system and means for cleaning the filter automatically upon opening or closing the drain and without altering the connection of the filter to the oiling system.
2. In combination with an internal combustion engine having an oiling system and a valved drain therefor, a filter connected in the oiling system, means constantly connected to the drain valve for controlling the drain and means for. cleaning the filter automatically upon manipulation of-the means for controlling the drain.

In combination with an internal combustion engine having an oiling system and i a drain therefor,a housing in the crank case of the engine, the housing having a port opening through the wall of the crank case, a filter element in the housing, a valve for the drain connected to the filter element, a cleansing member associated with the filter element, a shaft connected to the filter element extending through the wall of the crankcase and means for rotating the shaft to operate the valve and cleanse the filter element concomitantly. In combination with an internal combustion engine having an oiling system and 'a drain therefor, a housing in the crank case of the engine havinga clean out port opening throu h the wall thereof, a filter element mounted or rotation in the housing, a cleansing member co-operating with the filter element, a valve for the drain having a sliding connection with the filter element, a shaft for rotating the valveand filter element con comitantly, the shaft extending throu h the wall of the crankcase and a handle or rotatin the shaft.
