J. R. FRANCIS 1 766,781 HEATING MEDIUM CONTROL FOR CHARGE FORMING DEVICES FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed Sept. 29. 1922 June 24, 1930.
Patented June 24-, 193i) siren s'rars rarest JAGOB RICHARD FRANCIS, OF FLEET, MICHIGAN HEATING-MEDIUM CONTROL ESE CHARGE-FORT'IIN'G DEVICES FOR INTERNAL-CORD BUSTION EIQ'GIE ES Application filed September 29, 192. Serial No. 591,345.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in heating medium control for charge forming devices for internal combustion engines, the object being to provide novel means for controlling the application of heatso that the charge will be heater in order to produce a highly efficient explosive charge without any danger of overheating the charge, means being provided and controlled by the movement of the throttle valve of the charge forming device for preventing the heating medium from passing to the respective heating chambers when the throttle valve in full open position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a construction which is very simple, the parts being so arranged that they can bcrcadily placed in position on an internal combustion engine of the ordinary construction new in use.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an internal combustion engine showing the application of my improved construc tion of heating medium control; and
Figure 2 is a vertical sect-ion through the same. i
In the drawing 1 indicates an internal combustion engine provided with an intake manifold 2 and an exhaust pipe 8 which is provided with a valve casing 4 in which is mounted a valve 5 for completely closing t e exhaust passage leading to the muffler for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
The exhaust pipe 3 is provided with an outlet 6 to which is connected by a bolt 7 a castingS which is provided with a passage 9 communicating with the p assagefi, said passage 9 being in communication with a hcating chamber 10 surrounding the main p013 tion of the intake manifold 2.
The manifold 2 is secured to a vertical extension 11 of the casting 8 by bolts 12 and the chamber 10 surrounding the central portion of the manifold is provided with an outlet 13 which registers with an inlet 14: of a heating chamber 15 surrounding the mixing chamber of a charge forming device 16 here in shown in the form of the well known type of carburetors now on the market known as the Marvel carburetor.
'lhe carburetor 16 is connected to the lower portion of the intake manifold in the usual manner and extending through the main passage of the manifold is a passage 17 in communication with the heat chamber 10 and forming a hot spot in the passage of the eX- plosive charge passing therethrough so as to heat the heavier particles of fuel to vaporize the same in their passage to the internal combustion engine and at the same time the passage is heated by the heat jacket surrounding the same and as the charge forming device is provided with a heat chamber, the heavier particles of fuel are thoroughly vaporized be fore they reach the internal combustion cnine. 1
T he carburetor is provided with a throttle valve, not shown, mounted on a. stem 18 which carries a pair of arms 19 and 20. The heat chamber 15 of the charge forming device 16 is provided with an outlet nipple 21 which is connected to an inlet nipple 22 of the valve casing 41 by a pipe 23 to the muffler side of the throttle valve 5 located therein so that when the valve 5 is in closed position, the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine are conveyed through the passage 9 of the casting 8 into the heat chamber 10 of the intake manifold, then into the heat chamber 15 of the charge forming device and out the outlet thereof through the passage 23 back into the valve casing l and thence to the inuliler in the usual manner.
In order to prevent theexplosive charge from being overheated when running at high speed and to control the application of the exhaustgases to the heat 1ackets to a nicety, I provide the valve 5 with a stem 24- on which secured an arm 25 which has a connecting rod 26 adjustably secured in the end thereof as shown at 27, the other end of the rod being provided with a hook 28 adapted to be placed in one of the openings formed in the arm 20 of the throttle valve stem 18 of the charge forming device. The arm 20 is provided with an enlargement at its ends provided with two openings adapted to receive the hooked end of the rod 26, one of the openings being adapted to receive a rod for adjusting the relative position of the throttle valve to the valve 5 for summer use and the other being adapted to receive the hooked end of a rod for adjusting the position of the valves in respect to one another for winter use and it will be seen by this construction that as the throttle valve of the charge forming device is opened and closed, the valve 5 of the valve casing 4 of the exhaust line is opened and closed so as to throttle the exhaust gases to control the application of the gases to the charge formed in the carbureter.
In order to form positive means for pre venting any of the exhaust gases from circulating through the heating chambers of Qii the intake manifold and charge forming device when the throttle valve is in full open position, I provide the outlet nipple 21 with a valve 29 to the stem of which is connected an arm 30 which is connected to the arm 19 by connecting link 31 so that when the throttle valve of the charge forming device is in full open position, the valve 29 will be closed so as tocompletely cut off the circulation of the exhaust gases to the heat chamber.
This construction provides means for preventing a certain amount of the exhaust gases from circulating through the heat chamber by the back pressure caused by the valve 5 in the exhaust line pipe and positively prevents the application of heat when the throttle valve of the charge forming device is in full open position.
