Beit known that we, CHARLES A. MUNGER,
of thecity of New York, in the county and State of N ew York, land ARTHUR P. YATEs, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tank-Gans for Oil and other Liquids, of which the fol-l lowing is a specification The primary object of the present invention is the production ofl an improved tank-can of superior compactness and simplicity of construction,which will at the same time possess the required functions, and be adapted 'to be used with superior convenience and efficiency.

This improved tank-can is intended, like others of 'the same general class, for the use of retailers and large "consumers of kerosene or coal-oil and other liquids, and to be made chielly of `galvanized iron ortin=plate, and of various'sizes, graded as to capacity to suit'the demand.

The former is adapted, besides its primary function, to serve as a support for measures While the tank is open, or at all times. To especially adapt it for this use, the fixed section c of the cover has been depressed at its front edge, or at the middle of the top, suiiciently to cause it to shed the drippings, and provided with radial cond noting-grooves, the latter leading to a central drip orifice or passage, which, in the illustration, is formed by an eyelet, d, serving, primarily, as a pivotal rivet to unite the two parts of the cover. A knob, e, accommodated in one position by a notch, f, in the fixed section, facilitates mov- Swire, g2, extending around the outside of the front opening, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
To divide the interior ofthe tank into a reservoir, A, and a sink 'or pump-chamber, B, above the reservoir, a horizontal `partition or door, h h2, is employed, and to give convenient access to the reservoir to facilitate cleaning the tankthe front portion h2 of this floor is attached to the fixed rear portion by hinges Q2, so as to form a drop.

The pump-support is located at the right-hand side ol the tank, and is segmental in form, and is supported within a corresponding oritice in the sink-door h h2, so as to project above it;
but it may be located wholly above or below the door, it' preferred, or with its upper surface level with the door, and in the latter case a collar or sleeve ot' the required length may take the place of thc bottom and side plates m n. The pnmp-support may also be eX- tended back for additional strength, ars-indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. For supporting the head ot' the pumpin elevated position Vthe neck or upper end of the pump-tube is provided with Va pair of latelal lugs, p p2, which may be in the same or different vertical planes.
When the pump or pump-head is' turned into one position, (indicated in Fig. 4, and by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) the upper lug p coincides with a corresponding enlargement of the orifice 0, and the pump or pump-head can be lifted until this lug appears above the pump support. A partial rotation ot' the pump or Lpnmphead then locks it, and moves the nozzle to its effective position, the respective lugs passing above and below solid portions of thc top and bottom plates of the pump-support. Released in the saine manner, the pump can be readily Withdrawn altogether preliminary to filling or cleaningthe tank.
In the elevated position ot' the pump-head the gallon measure is accommodated beneath the nozzle, as indicated in Fig. 2. When the head is lowered upon the pump-support the low horizontal lid c2 works freely above it, and incloses it, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
The pump-tube is adapted to extend itself .to the required length, so as to reach always to near the bottom ofthe reservoir, bya iiexig ble extension-tube, t, Figs. 2 and 4, having A strainer, s, for returningthe t -trated our preferredv constructlon, which obthe lower valve o at its extremity, and, in a modification, by a packedtelescopic joint, t2, as shown in Fig. 5. 1n the latter arrangement the lower portion of the pump-tube is heldin position against lnovement with the head, and in the illustration this is accomplished by means of a hook brace or strut, x.
The reservoir is conveniently filled through the orice ointhe pump-support by inserting a funnel therein and pumping into the funnel.
We have particularly described and illusviously admits of modifications in unessential particulars.
The only details ot' mechanical construction which are considered essential to the several parts ofthe invention, respectively, are specitied, or necessarily implied, in the claims following. l
Our improved cover provides for the accommodation ofthe measures on the top of the tank above the movable cover of the pump-chamber, -so that the cover can be opened and closed at will withoutdisturbing them. At the same time it provides a convenient form of cover which is never in the way, and simplifies the const'ructionoil the tank, shortens it so as to adapt a tank ot' given diameter and capacity to setV Vbeneath a lower shelf, and facilitates packingv the tank for storage and shipment. A material saving in metal, time, and space, and in the consequent cost oi' manufacturev and shipment, is thus effected, while a superior article is at the same time furnished.
The following-is claimed as new and of this invention, namely 1. The flat horizontal cover c c2, forming the top of the tank, and composed ot' a fixed rear portion and a pivoted front portion or lid, the latter turning horizontally above the pump-chamber and beneath the dat rear portion ot' the cover, in combination with a pump which is covered by said lid when the tank is closed, substantially as illustrated and described, for thepurpose specied,
