" JaorI RYanus Application filed April 30,
This invention relates toj'a new and useful device in the nature of a rotary brush espeeially adapted for use by barbers, tonsorial artists, hairdressers and the like, for the pur-' pose of more readily and rapidly brushing hair. 1 c y The object of the invention is to provide a rotary brush of simple construction and arrangement of parts embodying certain new I and novel features hereinafter more fully describechclaimed and ill panying drawing. v

I Fig. 2 isa top plan view thereof. v f I Fig. 3 is a central verticalisectional vie thereof. f f v V Fig. 4 is atransverse sectional view taken on the line 41-4 of Fig. 1. 9 Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational View illustrating in particular a ..furtheridevelopment of the handle member as embodied in my improveddevice. I t
I 6 is a front elevational view thereof.
As here embodied 'my improved rotary brush comprises a brush body memberlOg of cylindrical construction, having secured thereto, or imbedded thereln bristles 11, extended therefrom, so as to provide a cylindri- #39 cal brush. The body member 10 has formed therein at its lower extremity an axial opening adapted to receive the extended element 12 of the collar 13, which is secured thereto in any desired manner. The collar 13 has thereto by the threaded member 18"mounte'd' in the enlarged extremity of tlie said shaft 17 The above described construction is such as cleaning, replacement or the like.
The conventional ball bearings 19 and 20,
preferably of the combination rotation and thrust type are mounted intermediately on the shaft '17, and maintained thereon'by the ustrated in the accom formed therein an axial opening adapted to secure the pin 14, secured [thereto by the threaded member l5 mounted in the collar 13. V The 11114. is extended'from' the collar 13 and will permit the said brushitobe easily and readily removed from the said shaft, for
' mounted in the opening '32. at-the rearofand 192s. Serial ma eria iz collars 21 and 22 secured to or pressedon the said shaft. The shaft-'17 is providedwith. flange 23, positioned at or near the upper extremity thereof, for the purpose as hereinafter set forth. f The above described construction is. such as will permit the. shaft, 17 to be rotatively mounted on the ball bearings 191affid f The handle as embodied in myimpro ved rotary brush comprises a pairof handle'members 24- and 25, similar or identically shaped of substantially fiat side construction, andprovided with arcshape, convex or'cur'ved edges 26.3and 27 respectivelyfand opposite edges 28 and 29 respectively formed or The said handle members are remo-vablysecured together by means of thethreaded me1nbers'30, and have formed therein a longitudinal opening adapted to freely'receive the V shaftlZ'and the collars 21 and 22 and to engage or grip the ball bearings 19 and 20, as a means of rotativelysupporting the shaft in the said handle members. The said opening formed in the handle members is provided with anenlarged portion adapted to receive the flange 23 of the shaft 17, so as to permit thesaid flange to function as a thrust support combination thrust ball bearings.
for the said shaft, co-acting with the said the user'of my improved ro- The engaging member 31 is slidabl mounted in the opening'32 formed in t e lower portions of'the handle members and is provided with anextended element 33 normally held somewhat extended in the lower portion of the abovementionedlongitudinal opening formed in the said handlemembersby means of the expansion spring 34 positioned in the opening 32, directly at the rear of the engaging member '31 and in engagement therewith. The said spring is maintained therein by the [threaded member 35, threadedly in engagement with the said spring. "The lower extremity of the shaft 17 has formed thereina slot 36, adapted torec'eive theusual to extended from the usualflexible shaft 7 88, such as is commonly used to rotate or "drive appliances, such asmassaging tools,
dentists drillings, hair clippers and the like,
and which is operatively attached to a suitable electric motor, watermotor or the like,
' as a means of rotating my improved rotary brush. I
- The above I as will permit the extended element 33' of'the engaging member to automatically. engage in the usual co-axial groove" formed in the fixture 37, for the purpose of permitting myimproved rotary brushl'to be readily and easily attachedjor detachedfrom the flexible shaft, which .is'highly desirable and convenf ient when hair clippers, a massaging tool or the like are to be used, as a means of providing interchangeability of the said appliances.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the accompanying drawand formed or bent so as to conform to the said irregular edges and provided with an extended free. element A2 or extremity, of
somewhat reduced cross section and having I its inner surface, serrated as at 4:3. The above described construction is such as Wlll permit the brake lever to conform to the fingers of ;which' will also permit the serrated surface 43. of the brake lever when forced orj pressed the operator of my improved device, similar to theabove mentioned and described irregularfedgesof the said handle. members, and
' on the handle and extending beyond one end inwardly by the finger ofitheoperator, to engage orstrikethe above mentioned engaged extremity 16 of the said shaft 17, as a'means of stopping the rotation of my improved rotary brush.
formed or bent irregular so as to conform to the irregular edges of the saidhandlemembers, so as to provide the above mentioned and described conven ent finger grip. The
- grip member 44 is provided with an extended portion 45 or extremity, adapted to provide additional gripping surface for the fingersof an operatorhaving ,a comparatively is large hand.
The above described construc- 'tionis also such as'xwill permit the grip mem ber 44: to be hinged upwardly as at 4A, and: i
: whi'ch will permit the brake lever 40 to be hinged downwardly as at 40, when desired asa means of providing somewhat different ."gri p; for the fingers of etheroperator in con- V tinned or prolonged use, so as to prevent or I claim as newand desire to secure by United Sta s Let ers atent is: a

thus described myinvention, what I iffceiao 1. A rotary brush, comprising a' handle" rotatively supporting a shaft carrying a brush, said shaft being formed with an enlarged portion disposed adjacent one'end of the handle, a brake lever'pivotally mounted- -at one end intermediate the ends of the bandle, and extending beyond the endsof the handle, and engageable against the said enlarged portion for producinga braking ac tion, and agrip member'pivotally mounted at one end'coaxial-ly with the brake lever and 7 cap able of. assuming a position superimposed tionfiush against the said handle.
on the brake lever, or in the opposite direcf said shaft being formed with an enlarged V portion disposed adjacent'one'end of the handle, a brake lever pivot'ally'mounted at one end intermediate the ends of thehandle,
and extending beyond the ends of the handle, 7
and engageable against thesaid enlarged p'o rtion for producing a braking action,.theportion of the brake lever 'engageable against the enlarged portion of the shaft beingfserrated,
and a grip member pivotally mounted at one end 'coaxially withith'e brakelever and ca- .pable of assuming a position superimposed on the brake lever, or in theopposite direction flush against the said handle.
rotatively supporting a shaft carrying a brush, said shaft being formed with a n*enlarged portion disposed adjacent one end of the handle, a brake lever pivotally mounted of the handle, and-engageable against the r r 3. A rotary brush, comprising a'han'dle said enlarged portion,'and a grip member pivotally mounted on the handle and ar-- rangedfor assuming a position superimposed onrthe brake leverfor flush against the said handle. w i
In testimony whereof .I have aflixed my I GIULIO Anp ooI.
