other suitable material by} rneansof a screw .15. Thescrew 15 passes through awasher 16 and a, supporting bracket 17,,and is riveted so as to rigidly, holdthese parts'to: I
gether,"'and' its end is drilled as shown in 1 at its outer end, the trunnion freely fitting a hole 24: formed inthe howl In the past, considerable d'fiiculty has been encountered in securing the inner end 01"". the scraper hla deto the end ot the spindle. When hard ice cream is being dished, there isa considerable "sheering strain on this connection and in the past the scrapers have frequentlysheered ofii adjacent the-"spindle. I have overcoiiie this" Ldifiiculty by providing the. novel means for fastening the blade to the end off th' e spindle- 1 which is shown in detail in 6. A
tongue 25, rectangular in cross-section, ex; tends from the end'of the spindle 19 'and passes through a rectangular slot formedin I the end of the scraper 22. A retaining'meni;- ber 26 made of copper or other suitable duotile metal having a similar slot is 'then pressed over the tongue '25 bent so as to engage the sides of the scraper blade and also the surface of the spindlelgf The 61 41 of the tongue is riveted over"thisretaining member. The retaining member not only holds the scraper tothe spindle but also reenforcesthe portion'of'the scraper lying adjacent the spindle. W
A PllllOIl 2'; is pinned or otherwise suitablyfixed to the endof the spindle l9 adj acent the handle and co-operates witha seg- BEGIN/28130111166. integral 'with the lever 29. The lever'29fha's a sleeve 30 fixed ,7 thereto or integral"therewith, which is rotable on a pin secured at" the end of the'hracket'l'f by a nut 33. A cup-shaped (so After this has been done, it is merely necesprotecting housing '34 is riveted at the other end of the pin 31 and the edge surface adjacent the'segment 28 guides and maintains I I the segment in its proper operating plane.
Atorsional helical spring 35 has one end 36 hooked through a notch formed in the lower "edge of the housing,'the other end .37. be- 7 ing hookedinto a notch 38 at the upper end 7 or. the sleeve 30. Ajstop 39 integral with the segment 28 is adapted to arrest -thesegment in its normal position, the spring 35 being wound so as to tend to normally hold the ,stop 39 in engagementwith the side of the frame 13; The operating stroke is limited byfthe abutting of the lever 29 with'the frame 13'. v p
As bestshown in Fig. 1, I provide a means-for resting the fingers of the hand when operating the disher by means of the thumbf This finger rest consists'oi a plate '4l having a hole 42 formed therein. The
"plate also has a pin 43 riveted thereto, the pin extending parallel and adjacent to the handle,14. This finger piece not onlyprovides a 'restitor the fingers in the dishing operationpbut the platel4l provides a surface againstwhich pressure canbe brought to bear in'the scooping operation. The position 'of the finger pin 43 relative tothe actuating lever 29 is such that these parts maybe conveniently. grasped by thei'orefinger and thumb respectively. Due to the position and shape of the actuating lever,
and segment, a great deal of pressure may be exerted on the scraper.
In cleaning the disher, the scraper, spin;
. dlejand pinion may beswung from operative position by merely removing the trunnion A portion 44 of the pinion 27 is blank, as s'h0wn in Fig. 4, to prevent .in-
' correctie-enmeshing of'the' pinion with the segn'ient 28. WVhen the pinion has been dis engaged from. its, operating segment, as when cleanlng the scraper, the uncoiling'of the spring 30 is prevented by the engagement of; the stop with the side of the y In assembling the actuating lever and segment on .thepin 31, the segment 28 is POST? tioned' over the bracket17 and the housing 7 34 together'with the pin 31 and spring 35 'areiplaced over the sleeve 30 which is in tegralwith or secured :to the segment 28.
, sary to rotate the housing relative to the bracket until the desired tension has been put on the spring 35 and then tighten the nut 33. V, The end of the'spring will readily fall into the notch 38 formed in the sleeve.
'30 and will beheld therein by the end of the housing 34. The other end of this spring will also be heldin its notch in the housing 34 by the segment 28 after the pin 31 has been secured to the bracket 17 by the nut 33.
In using the disher the handle 14 is grasped so that the index finger rests upon the pin 43, and the side;of this fingerlies adjacent and engages the plate41' so that considerable pressure may be exerted in the scooping operation. In dishing the cream, the finger rest p n 43 permitsthe operator to utilize the strength of his thumb and fin-' o ger in the mostefiicient manner. Due to this arrangement, a long stroke of the thumb I r is possible, making the thumb pressure necessary to operate the scraper much less than required in ice cream dishers no-w. 1n use.
The position-of the finger rest maybe adjusted to suit the user bypartially unscrewing the handle 14, it beingapparentthat it is merely clamped between the washer 16 and the end of the handle} As above pointed out, the scraper may be removed from the bowl without dislo'cating the actuating mechanism, Since the bear ing 20' is pivotally mounted-Tbetwe en the l v sides of the frame, the bearing is 'self align ing'with reference'toth'e spindle. 7 While the. form of mechanism hereinshown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is' tobe understood that it is notfintended to embodiment herein disclosed, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all
