My invention relates to hoisting mechanisms and more particularly :to hoisting mechanisms of the portable type.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved hoisting mechanism. Another object of my invention is to provide an improved hoisting mechanism of the portable type particularly adapted for operation by steam. A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved steam hoistting mechanism of a very compact type in which excessive heating of the parts which must be manipulated may be avoided, and in which leakage may be reduced and disposition of the exhaust steam facilitated. Other objects and advantages of my invention will hereinafter more tully'appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes or illustration one form which my invention may assume in practice.

Fig. 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section through a hoisting mechanism constructed in accordance with the illustrative embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar section with the drum turned through 90 and with parts shown in elevation.
In the illustrative embodiment of my improved hoisting mechanism, the same comprises a base frame 1 upon which at opposite ends there are mounted hangers 2 and 3. Rotatably mounted within the hanger 2 is a member 4 which will be more fullydescribed later, this member 4 having a sleeve or flange 5 formed thereon which is journaled in the hanger 2. The hoisting mecha nism also comprises a drum'G at whose opposits ends are arrangedheads7 and 8, these headsbeing respectively provided with stub shafts 9 and 10 which are journaled in bearings l1 and 12, the former of these bearings being arranged within the sleeve 5 while the latter is arranged directly within the hanger lVithin the drum 6 and spaced therefrom for the greater portion of its periphery is an engine casing 13, the casing being separated by an air space 1 1 from the drum shell proper whereby the heat of the steam admitted to the motor casing is not Serial No. 579,448.

The rotors are of slightly less length than the chambers 17 and 18 so that at the ends of the rotors there are formed exhaust spaces 23 and 24, which spaces will be referred to hereafter, the fluid escaping to these spaces from the tooth pockets when the toothblades are carbon rings 33 which are of such size as to fit quite closely the periphery of the shafts 25 and 26 and these are held up by spring pressure and by exhaust pressure, the spring pressure being furnished by springs 34 lodged in cavities 35 in the members 32.
Motive fluid is admitted to the rotors by way of an axial passage 36 arranged in the stub shaft 10, the stub shaft 10 being 'sur rounded by a stuffing box 37 to prevent leakage of steam around its outside. The passage 36 communicates With the passage 38 extending radially within the head member 8, and this passage connects by a passage 39 formed in the casing 13 wlth an mlet ready clear. l luid passage 40 opening into the rotor chambers at the point of inception of the expanding pockets. Exhaust takes place by way of passages a2 and communicating with the exhaust chambers 23 and 2-1, tiese passages communicating With a longitudinally extending'passage 41 formed in the casing 13 Which commimieates by a ll and a radial passage 45 With a passageway d6 Which leads to exhaust, the passage 46 being formed in the stub shaft 9 and the latter being surrounded by a stufiing box s 7.
Rotation of the drum is accomplished by the following means. The shaft 26 upon Which the rotor is mounted carries at its end a pinion all which pinion meshes with an internal 49 which car ed upon a iaft 50 journaled in bearings :31 and 52, respectively, formed in the heads 16 and 7.

The flange 60 is also provided with a oraling surface 61 with which a brake band 62 operated by suitable manual control means cooperates in holding the member l stationary or releasing it at will. Therefore, depending upon Whether the member a is held stationary or not, the drum Will be rotated While the motor runs, or the drum may remain stationary while the mo tor still continues to run. By'r'eason of the air spaces and the arrangement of the ports and passages described, there will be but little of the heat from the steam employed in the motor transmitted to the drum and the rope Wound thereon, and accordingly it- Will be possible to handle the hoist and the haulage cable Without danger of injury from burns.
While I have in this application specific-ah y described one form which my invention may assumein practice, itwill be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in va rious forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.

In a hoisting mechanism, in combination, a rotatable Winding drum, a steam actuated motor disposed therein and held in immovable relation thereto, said motor hav ing a plurality of intermeshing motor rotors, one of said rotors having a power shaft, and driving connections between said power shaft and drum including a pinion carried by said shaft, a plurality of sets of coaxial gears, one gear of each set meshing With each other While the remaining gear of one set comprises an internal gear meshing with said pinion, and fluid supply and exhaust connections for said motor including passage forming means extending from said motor to a point beyond said coaxial gears.
