' ,TOY CANNON;
I *hpplieation' filed T anuary'IG, 1929, Serial No. 332,992.
7 My invention relates tjo cannons." i
It is the o'bjectof my invention to provide a construction particularly adapted for toy cannons, toy pistols, and other toy firearms, in which a fulminate cap is employed'to light a fuse of a firecrackerand'the explosion of thel fire cracker resultsiafter ejecting the body of the fire cracker from the barrel of the gun: It is the particular object of my invention to provide a novel form'of breech mechanism and'firing mechanism for firing the cap, positioning the fuse of the fire cracker and lighting the fuse from the cap when itjis so positioned. r n 1 J n It is an essential object of my invention to provide a simple structure so arranged that it must be vventilatedpositivelybetween each firing in order'to prevent explosions,
: during loading or otherwise," prematurely due to residual gases inthe' gun, burning por- I 'tions of the 'charge, etc.
' It is my object to provide such astructure having these essential factors for safety and for operation, while at the sametime maintain them with such simplicity that a child can operate them safely," and they can 'be economically manufactured and sold for a small sum.
v .30 -Myfinven'tion, meeting these conditions,
isillustrated in *follow'sz v n igure l is a'plan view of the one embodying my invention. n j Figure 2 is aside elevation-thereof. Figure 3 is a section of the line"3 3'of Figurel. n
Figure 4 is a section of Figure 3.
Figure 5 Figure 2.
the attached drawings, "as
the line 4 4 of is a section of the line 55 of Figure 6 is an inside elevation of the dc I tachable breech block and firing mechanism.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1" '45 designates the trail of the gun whlch is mounted on the axle 2 to be carried by the wheels 3.
V The barrel 4 of the gun is mounted on the f n explosion e ects-the fire-cracker'28j out of the gun' where the cracker explodes'.
trunnions 5 in the trail 1. The end of the by the spring 17.
vided withan eye 7 through which passes the Y lanyard 8. v v v Mounted on' the underside of the barrel of the gun, adjacentthe breech, is a hammer block 9110 which is pivoted at 10 ahammer 11 having a hammerhead 12 for' striking the firing pin 13, and a' thumb piece 14: to facilitate its being cocked. A lanyard arm '15 provided with an eye 16 is connected to the lanyard 8 'so thatwhen the lanyard is pulled the hammer can be moved to firing position. Within the block 9 is a springll' which serves to maintain the hammer in either firing orready to-fire positions and serves to" impel the hammer against the firing pin 13. The breech ofathe gun isprovided on either pair of lateral extending which areadapted to be lugs 18 are'sufiiciently, cam shaped on the faces 21 to form a locking engagement with the overlapping fingers 19. Thefiring pin 13 has a head 22 which reciprocates within an open topped firing chamber 23adapted to receive the fiilminate cap 24." This "chamber positions-the fulminate25 opposite the firing opening 26 into which is projected the fuse 27 of the firecracker 128- hich hasit's usual OpeTaZi Om The gun is loaded by inserting the fire crackerinto'thevbarrel withthe fuse in position as indicated. This insertion isthrough the breech-end of the "gun. The
breech block has its firing chamber loaded with the fulniinate'c'ap. I The bloclris 'applied'to the gun and rotated into locking. positionwith'the fuse 27 in the aperture 26.
, During this operation the'hammer and firing head are held'in inoperative position- =Upon pulling the lanyard 8 the hammer is snappedpthe firinghead drives the firing pin 13"against the fulminate 25, exploding it. This in turn ignites the fuse 27 which in turn ignites the powder 29. The: resulting cap In a toy gun with a barrel about 6 to 8 inches long, the fire cracker is ejected about 30 feet at an ordinary elevation of the gun as indicated in Figure 2.
I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be clearly embraced within my claims and the scope of my invention. It will be understood any means may be employed for ejecting by eX- plosion and simultaneously igniting the charge; it will be further understood that the ejected charge will explode depending on the length of the fuse and the size of the ejecting charge.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a cannon, a barrel, a cap carrying fulminate chamber independent of the barrel and means for positioning the fuse of a fire cracker in said chamber. 7 V
2. In combination in a cannon, a barrel,'a breech block therefor, a firing chamber in said block, a firing pinand firing head in said chamber, said chamber having a firing port and a loading port, a firing hammer adapted to engage said pin mounted on said gun, and means for positioning a shell in said gun.
In combination, in a cannon, a barrel, a breech block therefor, a firing chamber in said block, a firing pin and firing head in said chamber, said chamber having a firing port and a loading port, a firing hammer adapted to engage said pin mounted on said gun, and means for positioning a shell in said gun, said means being so arranged that a fuse in said shell will project in said firing port. V 4. In combination, in a gun, a gun barrel, a rotatable breech block, a firing chamber in said block having the upper end thereof open for loading, a firing pin and firing head reciprocating in said chamber.
5.
