IMDPROVEMENT IN SCRAPERS.

l Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [76,514, dated April 25, 1876; application filed March 25, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PROSPER OOUPAL, of St.Anne,in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im' provement in Earth-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved dirt-scraper which shall be so constructed that it may be much easier handled than scrapers constructed in the usual way, and, at the same time, shall be equally efl'ective in use.

The invention consists in an improved scraper, formed by the combination of the catch-plate, and its swinging arms and pivoted rods, and the spring-catches, with the sides,

and is pivoted at the centers of its side edges to the lower parts of the sides A. The rear end of the bottom 1),- When in working position, rests beneathut-he catch-plate E, placed beneath the rear parts of the sides A and back B. The ends of the catch-plate E are attached to the lower ends of two arms, F, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the upper rear part of the sides A, just in front of the upper edge of the back B. To the lower parts of the arms F are pivoted the rear ends of two rods, G, the forward ends of which are pivoted to the arms of the bail H, at a little distance from its ends. The ends of the bail H are pivoted to the lower forward part of the sides A, and in its center is formed an eye or loop for the attachment of the draft.

With this construction, while the scraper is being loaded, the handles are held in the ordinary position. When the scraper is to be unloaded the handles are raised, which causes the forward edge of the bottom D to catch upon the ground, and, at the same time, causes the rods G to push back the catch-plate E, which releases the rear edge of the bottom D, and allows said bottom to revolve, discharging the load. As the bottom .1) revolves, the handles are lowered, which brings the catchplatc E forward to receive and hold the rear edge of the bottom D, as it completes the halfrevolution, and, at the same time, the forward part of the side edges of said bottom are caught and held by the spring-catches I, attached to the inner forward parts of the sides A. The springs I are placed in grooves in the sides A, so that they may move back to allow the bottom D to pass them as it revolves.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent -An improved scraper, formed by the combination of the catch-plate E, and its swinging arms F and pivoted rods G, and the springcatches I, with the sides B, the bail H, and the revolving bottom D, substantially as herein shown and described.
