The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device of the indicated char- .15 acter of improved, simple and rugged construction, and among the advantages of the use of the device, are the following; Aifords rigidity with a positive vertical lift with no side or lateral thrust or cooking or canting 2 0 movement sufficient to bend. or spring the stems of the valve members; extreme power, durability and simplicity in operation; capable of being put in one set position and yet reach all of the valve members with equal accessibility regardless of the manifold, carbureter or other projections or attachments of the engine, due to the rigidity of the-device.

Referring now more particularly to the severalviews of the drawings, it will be apparent, that the device includes an attachment in the form of a block, base or bracket adapted to be rigidly or fixedly secured in position on the cylinder blockof an engine, such cylinder blockbeing designated 11. The attachment 10 consists of relativelyangularly disposed members '12, 12, and 13. The mem ber- 13 isprovided with an elongated slot 14 for the receptionfof oneor more of the bolts which serve to hold the head of the cylinder block in place. Such bolt is designatedl and is provided with the necessary sleeve and nut.;16 and 17, respectively, for effectively clamping the attachment 10 in place on the block 11. thereto or formed integral therewith a spindle'l8. An arm 19 is arranged for swinging or pivotal movement on the spindle 18' and is held from becoming separated from the spindle 18 by a washer 20 and stud bolt 21, the
latter being screwed into a threaded borein the spindle 18. A slide 22 is arranged for sliding movement on the arm 19 the full length thereof, and is provided with a depending vertically disposed spindle-23. A
lifting arm 24 is provided with'means 25 at one end adapted to receive the stem of a vlave member and to engage and exert pressure on a retracting spring on the stem of such valve member. The opposite end of the arm'24 is provided with asleeve'26 which fits the spindle 23, and is, slidable'up andidown thereon and so mounts the arm 24 for upan'd-down movement. 'The' upper end of the sleeve 26 is provided witha shoulder 27 and a collar 28 which rests on the shoulder 27 the collar 28 being. held in placeby a nut 29 screwed on the threaded extremity ofrthe sleeve 26. It
will be apparent that the arm 24 is not only mounted for i up-and-down movement, but that it may swing or pivot on the spindle23,

A lever 31 is associated with the toothed segment 30. The lever 31 includes a fulcrum or pivot 32 carried by the segment and said lever 31 is also provided with a hollow handle 33. The lever 31 is connected with the collar 28 by links 34, each of which is pivotally connected at one end as at 35 with the collar 28, and pivotally connected at the opposite'end with the lever 31 as at 36. A pawl 37 is connected with the lever 31 for pivotal movement as at 38, and said pawl is adapted to coact with the teeth of the segment 30. A rod 39 extends through the handle '33 of the lever, and the lower end thereof is pivotally connected as at 40 with the pawl 37 and the upper end of the rod is provided with a button 41. The button 41 may be manipulated to disengage the pawl 37 from the teeth of the segment 30, and a spring 42 which surrounds the rod 39 and which has one end in engagement with the handle33 and the opposite end in engagement with the button 41 serves to retract the rod 39 and incidently move the pawl 37 in engagement with one of the teeth of the segment 30. From the foregoing it will be apparent that the device may be readily attached in set position on the cylinder block 11 to the end that the device will be rigid yet enabling an operator to apply a positive vertical lift'for the purpose of compressing a retracting spring indicated at 43 surrounding the stem 44 of a poppet valve member without liability of bending or springing the same; that the key 45 of the. stem which holds the spring 43 in operative position associated with the stem 44 may be readily removed to be replaced by another whenevertheoccasion arises, or to enable the operator to readily remove the valve member for any purpose; that the lifting arm 24 may be releasably held at any desired lifting position through and by virture of the manipulation of the lever 31 and by manipulating the button 41 in one and the same operation; and that the liftingarm 24,

said slide having a depending spindle, a lift- 7 ing arm having a sleeve arranged on, said depending spindle to mound-said lifting arm for swinging and guided up and down movements on saiddepending spindle, a lever carried by said slide, a loose collar carried' by said sleeve, links each having the opposite ends thereof pivotally connected respectively V with said lever and collar 'to effect the up anddown movement of the lifting arm in response to the operation of said lever, and co-' acting means on the-lever and slide operable to releasably hold thelifting arm in different lifting positions.
6. A device of; the class described, compri's ing an attachment adapted to be fixedly secured, a supporting arm mounted on said attachment, a Work performing arm, a slide on said supporting arm, coacting means on said slide and Work performing arm mounting said Work performing arm for pivotal movement and up and down movement, and means operable to effect the up and down movement of said Work performing arm.
7. A device of the class described, comprising an attachment adapted'to be fixedly secured, a supporting arm mounted on said at-- tachment, a Work performing arm, a slide on said supporting arm, coacting means on said slide and Work performing arm mounting said Work performing arm for pivotal movement and up and down movement, means operable to effect the up and down movement of said Work performing arm, and means adapted to cooperate with the last mentioned means to releasably'hold the Work performing arm in different positions.
