The invention relates to new and useful improvements in needle bars for sewing machines and more particularly to the construction of needle bar and needle supporting head 5 for supporting the needles in a predetermined position on the needle bar.

An object of the invention is to provide a needle bar and needle supporting head for the needle bar for supporting a plurality of O needles with a common means for engaging and positioning thencedles and forming an abutment against which the needles bear and are held from longitudinal movement on the needle bar. V

A further object of th invention is to provide a needle bar and needle supporting head of the above type wherein one of the needles is positioned centrally of the needle bar and extends into a passage terminating in the needle bar. 7

These and other objects will in part be ob vious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.

In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention:

The invention is directed to'the construction of a needle'bar and needle supporting head carried thereby for supporting the needles in a sewing machine. The needle bar is provided with a central passage extending upwardly into the needle bar and terminating in the needle bar. It is essential that the needles shall be positioned in the needle bar with exactness so that a proper timing of the stitch forming elements will be obtained. When the needle is placed in a needle passage centrally of the needle bar, which passage terminates inthe needle bar, diiiiculty has been experienced in making a passage of proper length and in providing means whereby all the needles carried by the needle bar shall be positioned with exactness To accomplish this, there has been provlded an abutment bar carried by the needle bar and extending transversely through the needle bar and across the passage provided forthe needles centrally of the needle bar. This'abutment baris spaced a slight distance above the needle supporting head for the needles and all the needles placed on the needle bar and needle supportinghead are positioned against this abutmentbar, and are clamped thereagainst by suitable set screws. The abutment barbeeomes the gauge for positioning the needles.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the needie bar is shown at 1,'and this needle bar is provided with a central passage 2 which extends upwardly into the needle bar and terminates in the needle bar. Carried by the needle bar 1 is a needle supporting head 3. This needle supporting head is'in the form of a collar with laterally projecting portions 4., 4:. The needle supporting head is secured to the needle bar by a set screw 5 which is threaded through the head and into a recess 6 formed in the needle bar. This firmlysecures the needle supporting head to the needle bar; Each projecting portion 4 of the needle supporting head is provided with a vertical passage 7, which passage is parallel with the passage 2 inthe needle bar. 1

The passage 7 not only extends vertically all the way through the needlesupporting head, but it extends also laterally to the outer face of the projection so that the needle may be placedin said passage by a lateral movement if desired, but preferably by an endwise movement. I

7, 7. An abutment bar 10 extends through the needle bar 1 diametrically thereof and crosses the passage 2 a slight distance below the upper end of the passage. From the construction described, it will be noted that the needles may be set with great exactness as each needle is brought into engagement with a common abutment bar which positions the needles. This abutment bar also serves as an abutment for the upper end of the needles and prevents any possible longitudinal movement of the needle on the neodle bar or needle supporting head incident to the penetrating of the material being stitched. While there is shown three needles, it will be understood, of course, that a greater or less number of needles may be carried by the needle bar. It is essential to the invention, however, that one of the needles shall be positioned centrally of the needle bar. and that a common abutment bar shall be used for positioning all of the needles.

- It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a needle bar having a central passage for receiving a needle, a needle supporting head carried by the needle bar and having passages for receiving needles, an abutment bar carried by the needle bar and engaging all of the needles for posit-ioning the same, and means for securing the respective needles in position against the abutment bar.-

2. The combination of a needle bar having a central. passagefor receiving a needle, said passage terminating in the needle bar, an abutment bar extending through the needle bar and across the passage and projecting laterally from the needle bar, a needle supporting head attached to the needle bar beneath said abutment bar, said needle supporting head having means for supporting needles with the ends thereof projecting above the needle supporting head and in contact with said abutment bar.
