The invention relates to new and useful improvements in an'a'pparatus for producing stitched. trimming StllPS, and more particularly a trimming strip wherein a cord is inclosed within a narrow strip and secured therein by a line of stitching.

An objectof the invention is to provide an apparatus wherein a folding guide is used for infolding the edge portions of a narrow strip, and for folding said edge portions about a cord or cords, after which the thus folded narrow strip is passed through a former so that the parts are formed into the desired finished condition for the trimmin strip, and whileso held by. the former, are ed to a stitching mechanism located immediately in rear of the former so that the parts maybe secured together. i

A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the above character with a feeding mechanism which includes an upperfeed dog engaging a trimming strip directly in rear of the needles, and wherein said'upper feed dog is shaped on the under face thereof to conform to the upper surface of the finished trimming strip. These-and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed. y

underneath the folded in portion 'so that the line'of stitching may pass through the parts parallel with the cord, and said line of stitching will penetrate the infolded portion of the ribbon strip, the edge ortion thereof folded underneath, the infol ed portion, and the body of the narrow strip. There is, of course, a line of stitching adjacent each cord. This trimming strip may be modified, and a single cord alone may be used, but the above trim ming strip is illustrated and described for the purpose of making clear the invention.

The ap aratus embodying the invention consistsof a sewing machineto which is at tached a folder guide and a former. The folder guide is illustrated at 5 in the drawings, while the former is indicated at 9. The narrow strip 2 is first guided through a sponge cup 3, w ere the ribbon strip comes in contact with the sponge and is saturated with oil. The narrow strip next passes through a guide 4 which leads the strip into the folder 5. This folder 5 consists of two tubular members 5, 5, and a guide late 6, so that the narrow strip as it passes t rough the folder will 'be folded atthe side portions thereof into tubular portion of the shape. This former 9 ,at the inner side thereof is shaped so as to represent two large arcuate inverted grooves 11 which receive the two curls or infolded portions of the narrow strip from the folder 5. These large grooves 11 are tapered or narrowed down to relatively smaller arcuate grooves 12 and intoside grooves 13. The tubular parts of the strip issuing from the folder and passin into the former 9 are pressed or sha e into'the rounded ribs 14 with the cor s 1 inserted therein, and into the flat parts 15 as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The delivery end of the former is shaped to conform precisely to the desired shapin of the trimming strip. - Directly in rear of the needles is a feed dog 17 This is of the usual construction of the upper feed dog'so far as mounting and operation of the same is concerned. The end of the feed dog, however, is shaped so as to extend close up to both needles, and the under face of the eed dog is shaped similar to the shaping of the upper under face of the former 9 which bears on the trimming strip.

It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
