Description
` June 17, 1930. s. STEWART 1,764,764
. BEDS PREAD Filed July 2, 1929 bolster cover.
Patented June I7, 1930 STATES viPATENr OFFICE sAMUEI. STEWART, or LEWIsToN, MAINE, AssIeNon To BATES MANUFACTURING COMPANY, or LEwIsToN, MAINE, A CORPORATION OE MAINE BEDSPREAD This invention relates to bedspreads or analogous ornamental covers for beds, the o bject of the invention being to provide a bedspread which shall be so constructed that when it is in place upon the bed, it will give the appearance of a separate pillow, sham or IIeretofore several methods of covering the bed and pillows or bolster have been employed. One of these methods has `been to employ a separate bedspread andy pillow sham. a bedspread which is long enough to pass under the pillow or bolster, then be folded on the top side.` Neither of these methods is y satisfactory, chiefly on account of the time and care required to put the spread in place and to give to the bed a neat and attractive appearance. The bedspread embodying my present invention gives to the bed and pillow the appearance of a separate bedspread and sham but is made up in one piece and can be put in place on the bed in a very short time and with little or no skill or care.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following description and appended claim, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings forming a part of this specification wherein: 5 n Fig. l is a perspective view of a portion OI a bedstead having the bedspread ofmy invention in positionthereupon.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the invention with the spread open.
Before explaining in detail the present in-` vention. it is to be understood that the invention'is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practised or carried out in various ways. Also it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation, and it is not intended to limit the invention beyondv the terms of the claim hereto appended as considered in view of the prior art and the requirements thereof.
Referring now to the drawing, 10 repre- Another method. has been to make ornamental rutile portion or border thereof.V
Referring to Fig. 2,`it will be seen that the rulliell is sewed or otherwise fastened at its inner edge at l2 to t-he upper surface Of the bedspread and that the ruffle oi' border as placed in position upon the spread is of substantially U-shape. The material of the bedspread body and the ruffle or border is preferably the same but of course maybe different if desired. The finishing strip or tape 13 may be made of material different from that of the spread and ruffle; Thus it will be seen that when the bedspread is placed in position upon the mattress and pillows or bolster as the case maybe, the ruille'or border Il surrounds three sides of the pillow or bolster and defines it. The pillow raises up the portion of the bedspread lying inside the ruffle and the ruffle slopes downwardly and given a most attractive appearance. The size of the ruilde or ornamental portion 11 may be varied in size for beds of varying widths.'
