I In preparing fibrous material for subsequent treatment, for instance in spinning, it 7 is necessary to remove such foreign bodies as seeds, stalks,leaves, burrs, short fibres, etc. 5 The coarser foreign bodies are ordinarily removedby beater tools or similar devices, and the finer foreign bodies are removed by a carding process.
In the usual practice the foreigncbodies 10 are worked from the upper side of a drum into so-called covers, and removed therefrom either continuously or intermittently, or they are thrown off by the rotation of the Work- I ing or turning rollers as in a flax carding ma- 25 chine. This is practical only when the workingand turning rollers are mounted on the under side of the drum. I
The main object of my invention is to provide an improved means for removing coarse 2' and fine foreign bodies from the material on the drum surface, and so designed and so constructed that it may operate on the upper side of the drum or at any point desired, or at as many points desired around the en- 25 tire circumference of the drum.
In carrying out my invention I provide a grate directly beyond each set of working and turning rollers, and provide in front of this grate a free space for the continuous removal of the foreign bodies thus extracted. In the accompanying drawing I have illus trated somewhat diagrammatically a construction embodying my invention, the single figure being an end view of the working parts. In the construction illustrated there is provided a drum 10 which has a card covering, that is, its outer surface is provided with a -multiplicity of small steel points or needles in which the fibers'catch, and which pull the fibers along. In connection with this'drum 1 there are employed one or more sets of turning or working rollers. I have illustrated three such sets, including turning rollers 11, w 12 and 13, and working rollers 14, 15 and 16. These rollers are driven and their outer surfaces are covered with steel points or needles. The turning rollers 11, 12 and 13 take the material off the working rollers and :pass it back to the drum so that the material passes through several'times. The construction of'such turning and working rollers is in accordance with'commonpractice-in machines I of this general type. 1

but when the grate bar and working roller are on the top of the machine the protecting plate and brushing device are employed to conduct the material to such a point that it Will not fall back on to the drum.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An apparatus for the extraction of foreign bodies from fibres, including a cardlng drum, a turning roller, a working roller receiving fibre from the turning roller and adapted to throw-out coarse material by centrifugal force, and a grate bar adjacent to the surfaceo'f the drum and disposed'beyond said working roller to leave'a free space through .which the coarse material may be thrown from said Working roller.
2. An apparatus for the extraction of foreign bodies from fibres, including a carding drum, a pair of rollers including juxtaposed turning and working rollers, a second pair of rollers including juxtaposed turning and working rollers, a grate bar between the first "mentioned working roller and the second mentioned turning roller and spaced from the former to permit material to be thrown by centrifugal force from the first mentioned working roller, and a plate extending from said grate bar.
3. An apparatus for removing foreign bodies from fibres, including a carding drum having a plurality of sets of turning and working rollers spaced apart, each working roller being adapted to throw out coarse material by centrifugal force, and grate bars between successive sets, adjacent to the carding drum and spaced from the preceding working roller to permit said outward throwing of the coarse material.
4. An apparatus for removing foreign bodies from fibres, including a carding drum,
having a plurality of sets of turning and working rollers-spaced apart, and grate bars between successive sets, all of said sets being upon the upper side of the drum, and each I grate bar being spaced from the preceding working roller to permit the coarse material to be thrown outby centrifugal force by the working roller.
'5. An apparatus for the extraction of foreign bodies from fibrous material, including a carding drum, two spaced sets of turning and working rollers upon the upper side of the drum, and aprotecting plate disposed over one of said sets and spaced from the preceding working roller, whereby the last mentioned working roller may throw coarse material by centrifugal force onto said plate and prevent it from returning to said carding] drum. v
