Description

Patented June17, 1930 matte WILLIAM F. ARNDT, or wnrnnrown, wrsconsnaessrerioR or ONEJEALF 'r o Enwnnn IMCADAMS, OF WATERTOW'N,
BUCKLE Application filed May is,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in buckles. I 7
One of the objects ofmy invention is the provision of a buckle which is adapted for use on shoes, belts, straps, and for various other purposes, and includes in its construction novel fastening means whereby the fastening means is entirely enclosed from view from the exterior or face of the buckle so m that the buckle presents a very neat and attractive app'earance'when in use.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a buckle of the above character wherein the fastening means is operated through the actuation of a movable plate forming a part of the design of the buckle and wherein this plate-is so constructed that various types of ornamentation and designs may be applied to the face of the plate to geincrease the fanciful appearance of the buckle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a buckle of the above type wherein the securing parts thereof are so arranged for operation that the free end of the strap may be quickly and readily engaged therewith and securely held against displacement,
but at the same time may be quickly and easily released.
so With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features I of construction, the combination and arrange ment of parts hereinafter more fully set v forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation ofa buckle constructed in accordance with my invention; 1
Figure 2'is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1; Q
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view similar to Figure 2, showing the fastening member in an inoperative position; and
Figure 4 is a rear elevation of the buckle 5 with parts thereof illustrated in section.
In the construction of my improved buckle,
I provide a body member 1, having laterally extended ears 2 and 3 at opposite sides thereof. These ears 2 and 3 are formed with transverse slots 4 and adjacent the slot 4 in 1929. Serial no. 362,8 1?
the ais. a s91ml 0v5, me as. end or th trap or belt 6 may be p s d th o g slot 5 withits ends secured tothefbofdy of the belt or strap, as shown in rigurea; so
that one end of the strap issecured'to the may be carried'out, but in the presentin stance, I have illustrated the arm? assoldered at 8. The arm 7 fromitssecuring point curvesaround the 'central 'portion of the I body and is providedatitsfree end with c5 transversearm 9, the inner of wliich-is dis- Y posed centrally of the body and carriesa ret ainingfinger 10, while the outer'end ofthe arm 9 projects to a point adjacent theed'ge of the body 1 and is slightly curved, as shown at 11, to be engaged by the end of theangular extension" 12 which is carried by themovable hanel13.'
The retaining pin 10 normally projects through an opening la in the body 1 and is adapted to engage with any oneof the openings 15 in the free end of the belt or strap 6. The extension12 projects through a slot 16 in the body 1 adjacent one edge thereof and is so arranged to permit locking movement of the panel From the above, it willbe apparent that in securing the free end of the strap or belt 6 in place, it"is first threaded through the slot 4: in ear 3 andthus through the slot 4;- in the ear 2, positioning the openings 15 above the body 1 and afterthe beltor straphas beentightened to the required 'degre'e, the panel 13 is then moved downwardly to its closed position, as shown in-Fig'ureQ. v 1
v This causesthe finger 10, through the yieldab'ility of the arm 7 to pass through the" openings 14 and engage with any one of the openings 15 in the belt or strap. f'The panel 13 moves downwardly to thejposition, shown in Figure 2,'entirely covering the'*central portion of the body 1, thepin 1,0 and that, portion of the strap or beltwhich is secured against movement i It will be apparent from the foregoing that in order to engage the free end of a strap or belt with the buckle, the only operation necessary is the raising of the panel 13 to move the pin 10 outwardly through the opening 14, then place the free end of the strap or buckle in position, returning the panel 13 to its closed position as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Due to the yieldable nature of the arm 7, it will be apparent that thefinger 10 will be normally urged into locking position, as shown in Figure 2, and that due to the curved portion 11 of the arm 9, the angular extension 12 Will, during any movement of the panel 13, force the arm 7 outwardly away from the body 1, thus carrying the arm 9 Wisconsin.
WILLIAM F. ARNDT.
in the same movement and actuate the pin 10. i
In the construction of the buckle, the panel 13 may be provided upon its outer face with any suitable type of ornamentation or advertisements and the mounting of the panel is such that these panels 13 may be interchanged at any time desired.
However, in the present instance, the end of the extension 12, which is normally positioned at the rear of the body 1, is headed as shown at 17 to prevent the extension from being withdrawn through the opening 16.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent that slight changes may be made in the construction when putting the invention into practice without departing from the spirit of the same or the scope of the appended claims. V
I claim:
1. A buckle including a body having an opening therethrough, a yieldable arm on one side of the body,a pin carried by the arm 7 and normally projecting through the opening, a movable member on the other side of the body, and means carried by the movable member for engagement with the arm whereby to actuate said arm to withdraw the pin from the opening.
2. buckle including a body having a central opening, a yieldable'arm on one side of the body, a pin carried by the arm and normally projecting through the opening, a panel on the other side of the body and an extension carried by the panel and projecting through the body for engagement with the arm whereby swinging movement of the panel will actuate the arm to withdraw the pin through the opening.
3. A buckle including a'body formed with slotted projections and provided with a centrally disposed opening, a yieldable arm on one side of the body, a pin carried by said arm and normally projecting through said opening, said body having a slot at one side of the opening between the slotted projections, a panel on the side of the body opposite the arm, said panel having an extension projecting through the said slot and engaging the arm whereby movement of the panel away
