IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS FOR FLARING AND CRIMPING LAMP-CHIMNEY TOPS- Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 176,449, dated April 25, 1876; application filed March 20, 1876.
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it .known that I, LORENZ SToEHR, of
Pittsburg, county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus and Meth- ..od for Flaring and Crimping Lamp Chimr and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure 1 is a top view or plan of the apparatus for flaring and crimping lamp-chimneys. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same at line'y'fiFig. 1. Fig.4 represents it as it comes from the mold. Fig.
5 represents it flared. Fig. 6 represents the finished chimney.

The sliding piece 0, and links it, form atoggle for operating the arms k, for the purpose of expanding and contracting the arms I, and holders m, for the purpose of grasping the chimney and holding its base against the face of the flanged disk t, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The. chimney, as represented in Fig. 4, is formed in the usual way, and by the ordinary means. It is then placed in the rotating holder, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, and the base of the end a: is placed over the coniformed point of the disk B, W iththe shaft 0 resting on the standard D.
The operator rotates the shaft-holder and chimney by means of the driving-wheel g, pressing the holder and chimney toward the disk until the desired flare is obtained, which flare is represented in Fig. 5. The operator then draws the chimney from the coniformed pointed disk B, and places it over the cylindrical projection 4 of the disk G, and forces the chimney toward the inner face of the disk, which is pr vided with a series of radial projections, 5; and by pressing the chimney toward the face of the disk 0 the projections will make indentations upon the edge of the flaring portion of the chimney, causing it to have a series of curvatures, forming a crimped and ornamental edge for the flaring top of the chimney. The chimney is then removed from the holder and manipulated and treated in the usual manner.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is l. The mode described of forming the crimped tops of lamp-chimneys-that is, first rotating the chimney and pressing it against a conical former to distend the mouth, and then against a separate crimping-tool to indent the mouth, as set forth.
