y My invention is a roof formed of slates,/`
and the inventive` featureis in the manner of attaching the slates to a roof, forming a i )"1 double thick roof.
' 5 An object of my invention is the construetion of a slate roof with slates arranged in i double thicknesses, said slates overlapping Y at the upper ends so that nails secured in each slate will be onlydriven through one lo slate -into the frame of the roof.
, 2 'In constructing my roof I utilize slates o-f different lengths, preferably of two different lengths considered from the ridge of the'roof v to the eave, and each row of slates is of double 15 lthickness'vwith theshorter slates underneath the longer slates,'each slatebeing secured by a nail at its upper edge to the roof structure.
My invention is illustrated in the accom y panying drawingsV in which:
, 2.0 n Figure'l is a perspective yView ofl a roof f constructed inaccordance withmy invention.
V Fig. 2 is a sectionpthrough thel roof as if Y n taken on'the line 2%2 of Figure 1. i Y f f Fig. 3 is a plan of the rooflpartly'broken 25 away.
. 'Figa is a perspective View of two of the different length tiles.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional View of the lower merging edges of the upperandv of a rowV of slates.
f per edge and on top of these there is an upper r "rowv of slates `13 also ,having nail .holes 14 at their upper ends.r The longitudinal measure- I finent vof the slateslll, indicated by thehu-y fm'eral 15, is less'thangth'e longitudinal measurement of the y'slates 18, indicated by the numeral 16. That is, thejupper slates are longer than the lower slates, but it is imma-l terial whether the slates have the same width f indcatedby the measurement 17. Y Y y.
' A "roofl structure is'y indicated bythe nui meral 18, and theslates are arranged so that for instance, the lowest ,row 19 has the lower edge. supportedy on a ylongitudinal stripr20,
Y andthe upper end of the lower slate n1l is se` `cured' by yone or more nails 2l, whereas the upper endof the upperslate "13 is secured by notV have to pass throughtwo, ffslates From my 'construction .it `will ybe' seenj that" y theroof .is` of ya simple `type tomake:and`
only lrequires. that the slates bebfdifferento I lengths, :and preferably of onlyftwo differentv lengths so that the'upper slates of each`rw may overlap the ilo-wer `slatesfand fthatthere will beno necessityof securingnailsthroughl` l i n two 's'flates`,`,fthatjis', through an' upper and a'fc f lower slate. o n .y y
Another characteristic of myinvention is thatthelower edge 23'of each tier of slates l Aforms a line from one end of the roof to the* other. ,Whereas thisl horizontal line ade-""ilo scribed by the lower edgeof eachftier, isY o preferably substantiallystraight, it willbe 'found upon closer inspection that `the lower edge of each slate is rough and irregular, giving the appearancel of having beenbroken instead of cut. Furthermore, this lower edgeL is more or less curved when viewed from the y side of the slate, and insteadof being disposed jat right angles with the plane ofthe slate, it extends at an obtusel angle, so that itico l slopes downward .towardfthefeaves*of fthe "kf n roof when the slateiisfifn operativepositio'n. In assembling thelslatesfamore attractive 'y roof kis produced ifpcalrefis exercised torso dispose each upper slatethat its sloping lower i785 i edge substantially mergesinto, and forms a @continuation ofthe corresponding edge ofgthe y slate or gslatestherebelow i When `vso constructed, acasual observance of the roof, will@ knot reveallthat it is constructed of-tiers, each 90 Vof which-consists of-two layers offslates, but
the roof will'appear to bemafdel upof slates ofjdouble thickness. p The roof thus com'-Y posed k oftwo layers of slates, fwill serve morel eflici'entlyV *i'nzfv preventing leakage there?,`
thickness, inasmuchas each line ofseparation between two slates, extendingpper'pendicu-ilarly Vtothe ridere line` ofthe roof, will have Ythereunderg substantially 'twice as@ d many A 215i y 'i 5f i i through, than if the slateswere ofajsi'ngle 'l thicknesses of slate, thus doubling the assurance that any waterthat leaks through the uppermost of these lines of separation, will be Caught by the top surface of a slate there- 5 under, and discharged from thelower edge of that under slate, before this leakage has a ehance to penetrate one of the `eorresponding lines of separation in the under tier.
Various changes may be made in the prinm ciples of my inventionv without departing from the spirit thereof, asset forth inthe description, drawings and claim.
I claim: In a roof construction, a Vcovering Y oomposed'of rows of slates, each row comprising an upper and a lower layer of slates, the lower edge of each slate being in obtuse angularity Vwith thev plane of the'slate, and the lower s edges of the slates of Vsaid'upper and lower layers of each row, merginginto each other tov-present a substantially continuous lower edge for said-,row of slates, and the slates of each upper layer being longer than and overlapping those of the associated lower layer, and fastening means extending through each Y slate, each fastening means engaging but one s ate.V Y Y Y In testimony whereof` I have signed my nameY to this specification.
