Description

June 17, 1 3 s. B. HASELTINE CAR CONSTRUCTION Filed Dec. 19, 1929 I WL'Lnesa v 22 of the opening 18. Inasmuch as the -por-- tion of the opening 18 isof lesser diameter .than the portion 22,-shoulders 28-28 are defined at the lower end of the opening 18.
combined locking center pin proper comprises a main pin memberA and a locking memberB. The member A comprises ashank portion and a head 29at the bottom end thereof." Adjacent the head 29, the shank portion is oftsubstantially cylindrical; cross section,
. tion being such that the same fits between the walls 2 l2l of the smaller portionof the pin receiving opening 1870f the truck bolster, and
; the pin receiving opening 19 of the bearing block 13. The portion EEO. of the shank is hollow, as indicated at 31, the opening there- 7 through extendingthrough the head 29 also. I Above the portion 30, the shank of the member A 'comprisestwo spaced arms'32'-32 having an opening therebetween corresponding to the opening 31 of the .shank portion 30.
The outer. surfaces of the arms 32 32 are curved to correspond with the cyllndrical. portion 30 of the shank, and are inalinement therewith and fit thesmaller portion 21 of the opening l7. The arms 32 3 2 eXtend above 'the shoulders -25 of the bodybolster and have lateral enlargements 33433 at the upper ends thereof forming thelupper headof the member A. The enlargements 33 33 fit between the opposed curved 'wallportions of the pocket 24 of'the'bo'dy boisamnd are of alength corresponding substantially to the "length of the flanges 25-25 so that when theenlargements arealined with thefianges they will be co-exte'nsive therewith. The enlargements33 are slightly smaller than theelon-i gatedportions of the pin receiving openings so that theyfwill' readily pass through the same whenientering the pin member A upwardly through the truck bolster. The head 29 is preferably of annular rorm and coopcrates. with the shoulders 28.tofprevent upward 'di splacement of the member A. y i
1 The locking member B has a relatively .wideshank portion 34; at .the upperend there ofjcorresponding substantially in cross sec.
' 7 tion to the cross section of the laterallyelon gated. portion 22 0f the opening 17. .As most shank-ofthe member B is of reduced cross shankfportion 30 0f the-member A. As will be evident, the upstanding fingers32 32 of the member A reinforce" the shank toi the member B I and the cylindrical extension 35 atthe' bottom' t nder the member B; which is located within the openingfil'ofthelmeniber jA,irein;forces the. shank of; the latterfatfthis? Pa nt am ne shea s were B applied byjinserting the same downwardly through the opening of the body bolster and is held in position by resting on the upper end of the cylindrical section 30 of the shank of the member A. The top of themember B is substantially flush with the upper ends of the arms 32-32'0f the meniberA, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. In order to facili 'tate. removal of. the member B, the same is 7 provided withaneye portion 36 at the'upper as'indicated at 30, the diameter of this POI- f end. thereof. .i
In applying my improved combined locking center pin to the body andtruck bolsters of a railway car, the memberA is inserted within the'pin receiving openings-of the bolsters by passing the same upwardly through the truck bolster, the enlargements 3333 being alined with the laterally elongated portions of the pinfre'ceivingopenings so that the head at the upper end of the member A will pass freely, throughv said openings. After the .member A has been completely inserted and occupied substantially the. position shown in Figure 2, the-member is rotated. about its axis 7 through an angle of soasto register the enlargements 3333' at: the upper end, with the shoulders 25 25 of the body bolster.
Whenin this position, the member A prevents separation ofthe bolsters, the head 29' cooperating with the shoulders 28 of the truck bolster and, the head at the upper-end there;
of, formed by the enlargements 33-.33, co
'operating with theshoulders 25 25 of the body bolster. ."In" order to prevent displace ment ofthe enlargements 3383 of the mem ber A with respect toshoulders 2'5'f25of the body bolster, the locking member-{B isem-' 'ployed; Thls member is inserted downward- 1y through the' opening' of the body bolster,
the central portion of the shank thereofbeing passed between-the fingers 3232 of the member A and the laterally enlarged shank portion 34 entered into the laterally elongated portion ofthe opening 17 of thebody bolster.
The member B is force d downwardly until the cylindrical portion3'5Tth'ereof is tele A, the parts then being in the position shown tiverotationbetween this bolster and the as- Y sembled pin.) a
'To separate t'he bolsters, the' ineniber B is first removed by lifting the samethrough the 'scoped withinthe opening 31 o f the'member' A Opening of thebody bolsteri'jAfter the inember B has been entirely withdrawmthe inem ber A. may be freely refined; "The member is then "rotated throughan fangle of 90. sojasto aline theenlargemeiitsf33-33 ofthei fingers132+32 with ft-he ilaterally elongated Z port ons" of the pin freceiving "openings."
