'The member B is in theform of an elon- 1 gated plate having laterally enlarged portions 29 and 30 at the top and bottom ends thereof respectively. As most clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 4:, the enlarged portion 29 at the upper end of the member 13 is of such a height that it extends beneath the shoulder of the body bolster andis of such a 'width that, it occupies the upper endportions of the slots 2626 of the body bolster. The laterally enlarged section at the bottom. end of the member B islocated entirely below the shoulder 24 ofrthe truck bolster so that it does not interfere with the relative rotation of the assembled pin and the truck bolster and has the top thereof flush with the enlargements 2828 at the bottom ends of the members A-A. As will be evident, the enlargements 29 and 30 of the member B and the corresponding enlargements 28-28 and '2828 ofthe members AA together form complete annular head members at both ends of the assembled pin. The member B is also provided with an' eye member at the upper end thereof, as most clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4, by which removal of the same is facilitated. At the upper end the member. B is thickened as clearly shown in Figure 2, thereby presenting shoulders 3131 which abut the upper ends of the members A A for a] purpose hereinafter pointed out. p I
In applying my improved center pinto the bolsters of a railway car for connecting thesame, thesections A are inserted within the pin receiving openings of the bolsters successively. Each section A while being assembledwith the bolsters is placed in such a position that the head portions thereof register with the cut away portions of the shoul- V ders and sidewalls of the pin receiving openings, the flange forming each head member,
as hereinbefore pointed out, being of such a i placed laterally outwardly to engage the head portions at opposite endsthereof over,
the corresponding ledges of the shoulders of the body and truck bolsters.
7 As will be apparent upon reference ,to Figures 1 and 3, when the member A is thus dis placed, the fiat inner surface of the same will clear the slots 26 26, so that the other member A may be freely inserted through the pin receiving openings. After the second member A has been applied and fully inserted, the same is displaced laterally outwardly to the right as seen in Figure 2 to bring the head portions thereof in shouldered engagement with the ledges of the truck and body bolster. The filler or spreading member B is then applied by. inserting the same between the members A, the member B being entered through the opening at the top of the body bolster. As willbe evident, the member B when-fully inserted has the enlargement 29 at the top thereof engaging within the upper ends of the slo'ts'26 '26 of the body bolster shoulder, thereby locking the assembled pin against rotation with respect to the body bolster.- In this connection, it is pointed out that by thus interlocking the parts, the flanges '2828 at the upper end of the as sembled pin are at all times maintained in full engagement with the ledges 20-20 of the body bolster. As hereinbefore pointed out, the shoulders 3131 of the filler member B, engage the upperends of the members A'A, thereby holding the member B against downward movement. When the car is operated on curved track, the upper end of the pin being held against rotation with re spect to the body bolster, the truck bolster will be rotated with respect to the pin, thereby bringing the enlargement 30 in overla ping relationwith the shoulder 24 so that t e member B supplements the members'A-A in preventing separation of the bolsters, any pull on the enlargement 30 by engagement with the shoulder 24 being transmitted through the shoulders 31-531 thereof to the upper ends of the members A-A and through the flanges of the latter to the shoulder 20 of the body bolster. I
' In removing the pin from the bolsters, the spreading member B is first withdrawn by lifting the same upwardly through the body bolster,'one of the sections A then being displaced laterally inwardly so as to register the head portions'thereof with the cut away portions of the shoulders and the vertical slots 26. This member may then be withdrawn either through the top of the body bolster or dropped through the bottom'of the truck bolster. After removal of this section, the second sectionA is removed in a similar manner. As will be obvious, the body and truck bolsters may then be freely separated;
From the preceding description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be evident that I have provided a composite center pin structure having a shank which entirely fills the center pin receiving openings of the bolsters, thereby providing maximum resistance against shearing action, and have Mp3s , rying out my invention, but the same is- 'merely illustrative and I contemplate all i changes andmodifications that come'within v the scope of the claims appended hereto.
